'Homeless' police give traffic tickets
Friday, May 23, 2003 Posted: 1:49 AM EDT (0549 GMT)

KISSIMMEE, Florida (AP) -- Police went undercover as homeless people in tattered clothes to catch drivers running red lights.

The undercover officers watched for lawbreakers, then radioed ahead to other officers, who pulled the motorists over and gave them tickets.

Homeless advocates called Operation Vagrant, a sting involving Kissimmee police and the Osceola County sheriff's office, silly and offensive.

During the operation Wednesday, officers wore fake teeth and tattered clothing, and pushed shopping carts along the streets. They also carried small cardboard signs reading: "Sheriff's traffic sting in progress. Buckle up."

In all, 171 drivers were caught. Most were accused of running a red light, an $83 violation.

"It's kind of appalling," said Marilyn Gordon, executive director of the Homeless Services Network of Central Florida. "I wonder if it will be a consciousness-raising exercise for the law enforcement officers."

Sheriff's bureau Chief Jerry Geier said: "Our ultimate goal is to make an impact. The last thing we're trying to do is disrespect anybody."

i was expecting much worse... like police brutality or something of that nature. i dont see the need to dress up like homeless people.. didnt the signs kind of give it away? but its nice to see cops doing something useful. there are far too many asshole drivers out there that run red lights constantly... and im sure quite a few people have died from it.

I'm not a fan of police, but if they need to do that to catch criminals then fair enough.

Alot of people have lost lives and loved ones thanks to 'careless' (i can think of stronger terms) drivers.

:wavey: Im more than happy to post in any thread that is Anti-Police...I'm sure that 90% of Police are decent people...I seem to get the bad ones

2 years ago I was stabbed twice coming home from a nightclub, I went in to make a report and they told me they needed my bloodied clothes etc for DNA tests. There was a break and enter that night and they acused me of doing it, they wanted to match the blood etc. 6 months later they just gave me back my mouldy clothes and said the case was over. They didn't even look for the person that attacked me...saying "we have a few stabbings here (Albury) this time of the year"...CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!! so I have lost respect for Police big time. As for the police dressing as homeless people...it's only about raising revenue as much as they can.

Anyhow that's my bitch for the day. :wavey:
