What makes it even more pathetic, is that the other two WCs went to foreigners. So the idiots running the tournie didn't give any of their WCs to up-and-coming US players. American tournaments sure know how to piss all over themselves. Stevenson was a miserable choice.

If you think they're actually giving her a WC to draw a large audience, you're about three years late. I guarentee at this point that the casual tennis fan (or even a bit more serious than that) has no idea who she is anymore. And the tennis fans who do know who she is likely won't pay the money to see her get her ass kicked.

The good news though is that she's only allowed a certain number of wild cards per year (I think 4?) She got wildcard into the MD of Midland 75K, Memphis this week, the MD of Las Vegas 75K next week, and from what I've heard she is going to be getting a qualifying wild card into Indian Wells because she is a local.

I'm pretty sure she will be cut off after that and will either have to play challenger qualifying/10K's or retire.

The best thing about Stevenson getting wildcards is the whining. Wildcards are supposed to go to the players who have the most potential to make the tournament money. That's why the tournaments get to offer wildcards. They aren't there to help develop new players.

so then which do you think would make the tournament more money, a promising American newcomer like Vania King reaching the final, or 26-year-old Alex Stevenson getting schmucked in the first round? The marketing director for the Memphis tournie needs to be shitcanned, pronto.

I don't think anyone thinks she's going to draw a 'large' audience. Nor would any of the other available options. I think they're giving her a wildcard because she has the highest name-recognition of the players available, and they feel that name recognition will mean more ticket sales than they get if they gave the same wildcard to another available player. It's not like they gave it to her instead of Steffi Graf. Unless you're dealing with locals or stars, wildcards don't sell a lot of tickets no matter who they are. But a recognizable name will sell ten or twenty more tickets to first round match. That may seem trivial, but Tier II tournaments don't have big margins. They need to sell every ticket they can.

Professional tournaments are for-profit entities. Tournament directors give out wildcards based on making money. If they feel Alexandra Stevenson gives them a best chance at making a couple extra dollars, they'll give her wildcards. All the whining in the world won't change the facts.

Look at it this way. Why ELSE would they give her a wildcard?
