Anna will be reanked around No.75 with 484 ranking points, depending on the other girls' performance during the rest of this year (in ITF Challengers, you know )

My rough calculations - that is, this weeks points, points to come off after this week, not taking into account quality points from Philly and Chase last year - has her falling to somewhere around 700 points which puts her just inside the top 50. Add the quality points to her totals from Philly and Chase next year and she drops out of the Top 50 for sure.

In fact, I don't see why would not she play Challengers too? Why not? She has a lot of points coming off in January, if she fails to defend them, she might find herself beyond second hundred even.

Anna will finish with 484 pts.

that will leave her around 75 mark as ALPHA has stated.

she will be ok for AUS OPEN , but after that it might get a little complex

ys,

Anna to play Challengers ? For what reason ? In order to "score" 16 or 20 additional ranking points for winning a ITF title or what ?

Great idea ! Imagine that ! Anna losing to someone outside the Top-250 was bad enough, but Anna losing to someone in a ITF Quarterfinal or Final . . . THAT will be cool, don't you think ? But hey, it's worth the risk, don't you think ? I mean just look at al these juicy quality points.
Do you have any other degrading suggestions ? The tourney officials will be glad to offer her every wild card she requests for tournaments next year, I have no doubt about that.

Finally all the popularity pays off in a way !

ALPHA .... you can get around 80 pts for winning a 75K+H challenger

some $25K challengers ( winners got 40-50 pts,eg Surbiton)

Anna play a challenger? C'mon

The Russian Empress will have it rough early in the year because of her good results in last year's Aussie Opens and Tokyo, but after that she gains points with every event. Her close loss today to Clijsters was encouraging.

I'll sat this: if Anna DID enter a challenger-it would break all attendence records!

Exactly, Eggy. Play a couple of those Challengers, win them, get those 150 points to back her up when her ranking will hit the rock bottom in February, to at least keep her in Top 100. If Agassi saw nothing wrong in playing Challengers, what's wrong about Anna possibly playing them.

Anna can have 5 MD WC per year. 5! That's not a lot. One of them will be used at Sydney. The other in Tokyo. That's too. Then she'll take one to play in Europe and.. Then she'll need two for IW and Ericsson. And that's it.. She'll run out of them by claycourt season time. Then she'll start playign qualifying, and qualifying poitns ARE less than those of Top Challengers.

It is quite incredible, Anna and Mary will be floaters in 32-draw at OZ.. I think all seeds will be praying of not getting them.

This is bizarre! How did she manage to keep a top 20 ranking all year despite hardly playing at all, and then suddenly drop 20 or 30 places by the end of the year? Did she have an injury protected ranking or something?

Surely if she does well at the Australian she could up her ranking quite considerably? I'm saddened to year of this though as it means yet more pressure on her. She's already rather nervy and this is going to make things worse.

I'm not convinced that challengers are such a good idea. Given how injury prone she is, she'd do better to save herself for the big tournaments, get a couple of really good results that will send her up the rankings much faster.

Her ranking has been reasonably high for the same reason Martina was #1 throughout the season - because they both did very well during the indoor season of 2000. Now with those points coming off the computer, their rankings are going into freefall.... well, Martina's still going to be #4, but as for Anna.....

Thanks for the correction regarding the amount of ranking points you can score in Challengers, but that does not change my opinion in any way. Playing low level opponents can only harm the quality of your game - and the media would poke fun of her day in day out throughout the tournament. She is no Agassi - she is watched by the media and the public every day of her life. It's not that she can't play tennis anymore - it's a mental thing, that's all.
About the ranking and the entry cut offs - Anna is one the gold exemption list, isn't she ? That means Anna can get as many wild cards as she is offered by the tourney officials + the 5 WTA wild cards. So there shouldn't be a problem.
The day Anna will need to play quali to get into maindraw will be the day the WTA changes the rules for that issue, believe me. I don't see her ever play a quali match again.

Anna could play Challengers, and paddle the field relatively easily, but the ranking points she would gain would not be worth the risk of injury. Give her a few wildcards and a few low tiers early in the season and she will build herself up sufficiently to not have too many difficulty getting direct entry.
