No one is raging on and on about andy being number one without a slam. Where are all the threads and articles and news reports? Are men somehow immune to this?

Roddick is #4!
He's #1 on the Champions Race,
not on the tour. ;)

men are usually immune to this kind of thing
and things like "oh! look at the new visor he's wearing this year at the Open!" Men can go out there and kick the shit out of each other, and then go and have a beer afterwards. It's always been like that. It's a good thing!

Even if Andy reaches the REAL #1 rank without winning a slam, surely someone will come up with an excuse. I can hear John and Patrick McEnroe right now with all the Andy brown nosing.

I like Andy though, because I think he is good for men's tennis.

Does it matter if it's only the Race? There have been 3 majors this year...and Andy and Kim are both first in the Race, and both could end the year at #1 without winning a major.

The only reason there is big controversy over Kim on the boards is because she replaced the Williams sisters. The reason Roddick's ish hasn't made the press is because he is 'only' topping the Race at this point. Still, if he ends the year #1 without winning a major, there won't be as much controversy as surrounded Kim.

Don't worry, he won't get past the first round at the U.S. Open. Tim Henman has too much variety for the Courier-clone.

cause in men's tennis there have been number 1's without any grand slams, so it happened before on the ATP but this has never happened on the WTA, thats why their is so much controversy

Or how about this one: There isn´t a con-sensus no.1 on the ATP tour, heck there have been 7 different slam winners in the last two years and NO ONE has won two slams in a year since ´99!!

Contrast this to the women´s game. It´s harder for people to believe or accept that Kim´s no.1 when she has NEVER won a slam, while there´s another player who has won FIVE of the last six! That just doesn´t sound good to people!

Well, it's highly unlikely that Roddick is going to reach no. 1 without winning a Slam - the way the rankings stand at the moment, he has to win the Open to overtake Federer and get into a serious position to challenge for the year-end ranking. Either way, the battle's really between those two.

bandabou - Why are you quoting "five of the last six?" What Serena did in June 2002 shouldn't matter to who is #1 now...at the end of the year Serena will have won 2 of 4 majors, and Kim may have won 1. Add in Kim's extra titles, and she could be a deserving #1 in that sense.
