Amanda bats for Anna

Christo Buchner

Johannesburg - Amanda Coetzer says her three matches against Anna Kournikova in the MTN Challenge next week will be anything but an exhibition.

"I will play like I always do. I'm going to do my best and won't be fooling around," South Africa's top player said about the matches that will be played in Durban, Stellenbosch and Johannesburg.

She also did not hesitate to apply the honey brush lavishly to her 20-year-old Russian opponent, who is her junior by a decade.

"I know a side to Anna that most people never get to see. It is totally unjustified to regard her as a glamour girl who has never won a singles title.

"It is great for South African tennis to see a player of her caliber in action. I respect her game and the qualities that make her a brilliant competitor. She is the one world-class player that can attract spectators that would normally stay away from a tennis court," Coetzer said.

Coetzer met Kournikova in Moscow some years back. "I was eliminated in the first round of the singles and just wanted to get away. As I was leaving the stadium, this enthusiastic young girl rushed up to me and asked me to join her in the doubles. She was so keen I just couldn't refuse.

"That day I saw her true personality and it made a lasting impression on me. She has changed superficially over the years, but one must remember that she is constantly under pressure.

"Players who are bitchy about her simply do not know her. I can honestly say that she has never done anything to deserve criticism. She is a remarkable player and I believe she has the potential to win a grand slam title. She will do so when the time is right.

"She is physically just not strong enough. She is frail, and it is punishing to win five matches in a row."

Kournikova is getting better by the day after a foot injury kept her off the court, Coetzer said. "In our last match in Zurich a couple of weeks back I was leading comfortably when she suddenly won a brilliant point. After that she fought back strongly. I am also on top form, and I am very excited about the matches."

The 30-year old Coetzer says she is beginning to appreciate every aspect of the game at her age. "I'm focusing on the grand slams, in which I want to do well. I would have liked to play in the Hopman Cup in Perth again, but Wayne (Ferreira) will not be playing and South Africa have not been invited.

"I'm also motivated to do well in the Australian Open in January and this opportunity to play against Anna in South Africa is excellent preparation."

Nice article

Gives us some background info on that Hopman-thing and her future plans as well
It supports my impression that she plans to continue especially due to her disappointment in the Grand Slams this year ; maybe 2002 will be the last season therefore

Nice comments from Amanda...i think those comments had an underlying message and could inspire anna , that is , GAIN SOME WEIGHT girl..and also , once shes gotten physically stronger and tougher , i agree she has the game to step it up and win a grand slam!

mentally is the problem at the mo...i hope anna can get things chugging along and back ot the top ten next year!

Wow! Amanda is unbelievably nice! I've never heard another player talk so postively about Anna. Reading this makes my heart smile! Thanks Amanda.

P.S. - Steven M, Anna can only put on so much weight. She is naturally slender. Anna needs to be quick and fast. She has good power. But Anna will never be a heavyweight. I just hope all these foot injuries haven't robbed her of her great speed. By the way, gaining weight doesn't always lead to success in tennis. I think Elena Dementieva has put on about 10 pounds of weight since the 2000 U.S. Open. Compare her photos from 2000 and 2001. You'll see the difference. She's a little stronger than she was last year. But I think she's lost some of her tremendous speed. Was gaining weight the right move for Elena? I don't think so. Because it was done at the expense of her speed.

Good job Amanda! I have always enjoyed Amanda's tennis. She is not only a great sportswoman but also a very good feminine role model for young ladies. It was good to hear someone talk positively about Anna. I think the reason honestly that Anna gets so much flack is b/c of HER LOOKS. Let's face it, if she were unattractive like some of the players today, Anna could have the same demeanor and attitude she had today and no one would make a criticizing word. Women can be very jealous and good looking girls get the brunt of the jealousy. By the way Amanda is very very very attractive herself and that is why there is no jealousy there..AMANDA ROCKS!! GOOD LUCK AMANDA! LOVE YA!

Wow Amanda! I hope she has a great 2002 season. Hopefully she'll be healthy and able to play the great tennis she's capable of.

That was a nice, wonderful and classy thing for Amnda to write.

And she's right, Anna needs to get stronger, whether it costs her speed or not. Missing three quarters of the year is no career at all. She has to be strong enough to stay on the court. She needs to build up her legs. A player like Anna, who is very fast, and turns quickly, puts a lot of stress on knees, ankles and feet. The extra muscle helps support the joints. (I'm not talking about her becoming a body builder or anything). Amanda hit the nail on the head. She has to be STRONGER. That means more muslces.

I hear the wieght room calling.

How sweet of Amanda!

See...!
Anna is not only a "marketing-hype girl". She is a determined tennis player who hasn't achieved her best potential but keeps trying.
Of course she won't refuse big marketing contracts, if she can earn money outside tennis, and a LOT of money, better for her. Its just the fact that since she wins more money on marketing than on her tournaments performances, and people focus on that.

The Williams sisters also get a lot of money for ads and stuff, but they can kick some ass playing. While Anna... not much

Well observed Volcana.
Anna definitely needs to build more muscles. She is too "straight".
Compare her arm and legs to Martina's, who is maybe an inch shorter than her. It's a big difference.
