I was thinking, with Serna out of the US Open she will drop close to 1000 points, and if Justine has an improved hardcourt season and a good performance at the US Open, Kim and Justine will be ranked #1 and #2 after the Open.

Crazy thought huh? who could have predicted that this time last year?

However, I would still bet my house that this years US Open champions second name is Williams :p

If Serena doens't play Leipzig, then 1 and 2 is for Kim and Justine. Then serena lost more than 1400 points

You can't accept the reality! The rankings are a fact, just live with it!

Does that mean that everybody will root for Serena and Venus now that they are the underdogs?

Oh, but if Venus is the underdog, how come she's now the CLEAR favourite to win the US Open? If you wouldn't bet a penny on a Belgian winning, as someone in another thread said, then surely Henin and Clijsters should still be regarded as the underdogs?

Well, I think Venus will win the US Open now, and I reckon it would be great if she did.

However, now that her nemesis is out of the picture, this could be the chance Jennifer has been waiting for to end her title drought in style - and we know she likes to do things big style.

I really hope Jenny can do it!

Who said that she was the CLEAR favourite to win? A fan of hers? LOL

In that case, I will say that the Dallas Cowboys are a clear favourite to win the SuperBowl, regardless of how they are ranked. .. LOL

Nah, I'm talking about the rankings and the fact that people say that they root against them because they like the underdogs. Well, Serena won't be #1 anymore, and Venus won't even be in the top 4. What will be the solution now for people to root against them so adamantly and with such vitriole.

almost all williams fans here on the board, but also fans of other players keep saying that the sisters still are the two best players, and that they still are the players to beat, despite their ranking. so, they aren't the underdogs imo because they're ranked lower...

Also the USO is on hardcourt, where the williams sisters reign already for 4 years, if i'm right, again one conclusion (imo): they aren't the underdogs, but the players to beat

Well, Serena has withdrawn, and Venus is coming off of a very serious injury. I don't see how any real supporter of the underdog could root against Venus for the Open.

Well, if just about everyone on this board is a fan of hers, then they're the people I've seen saying that she is the clear favourite. There was a small element of sarcasm in my post.

And as for the rankings and seedings... are spectators really going to care about that? If Venus comes out and starts beating up the Belgians as she usually does, without any hint of a problem, the crowd may well start cheering for the opposition. If she's struggling, then I think they may well get behind her. So, have we now officially classified both the Parisian and New York crowds as racist?

Put it this way: if Venus is fit enough to not only enter the Open but to get the latter rounds and play against the Belgians and other Americans, she ain't the underdog anymore. It's quite obvious that if she is fit enough, she is easily the favourite against every other player in the draw.

Ok, so what makes a person the underdog? Ability or ranking? Of course, Venus' fans are going to say she should win. If she were in a wheelchair, the fans would say that. That's what FANS do. However, that's not what the argument has been that was used to root against them. Again, Venus is seriously recovering from an injury and out of the top 4. To me, she is the prime candidate for an underdog against opponents who are having decent hardcourt seasons.

To answer your question about racism (I'm assuming this is being sarcastic too which happens to seriously minimize the plight of people affected by racism), you would need to guage that for yourself if possible.
