... and all the articles that are appearing now I think basically comes down to one reason.

That is, without the Williams, there are NO realistic American hopes.

The reason why so many American papers want the Williams back isn't because of the Williams, per se. Because realistically, Davenport and Capriati are not seen as big threats. They're long shots. Let's face it, who here really thinks either can win.

So a Williams-less GS essentially = a non-American winner. Hence the reason why articles that say men's tennis is better for example are surfacing. Those who were fans of tennis in mid 90's will remember how there no American hopes (in the women's side) and how women's tennis got the same treatment from the American media. This is nothing new.

However, I do wonder. What if? What if Capriati or Davenport were to win this. I really think there will be very little talk of a Williams-less Open in the American papers because they would've gotten what they were afraid of NOT getting: an American champion.

Who cares? Although I agree with you, the media has been ruthlessly annoying throughout the Open and talking about this topic is no longer interesting.

To be honest with you, Lindsay has a better shot at getting to the final, bum foot and all because I think, if she faces Kim, Kim may fold under the pressure of being in her first USO semifinal because, let's face it, Kim has choked in two GS semifinals this year. The way Justine is playing, she is playing withut any fear and I think she can take Jennifer out in straight sets (though I think it will go to three).

You don't think Kim has confidence against Lindsay though ;)

I'm also sick of this topic, but I thought I need to give my opinion on the motivations of the media. Because of I've seen these articles before and imo this has only partially to do with the sisters.

On the contrary, this topic is extremely interesting.
The two true best players in the world are absent and that leaves the door open for a country, the size of Rhode Island, to have one of their two players come away with the American title.

Even thought some Americans did not want one of the fabulous WILLIAMS sisters to win the title, they all wanted the title to go to an American.
