Welcome

Thank you for taking the time to check in and see what this is all about again.

I've created a bit of an online presence when I was worried the forum would go down so bit by bit, I began to transfer and remodel my thread onto an actual website. During any free time I had at work, I'd continue with the site. It's always gonna be a bit of a work in progress so I'll still keep remodelling and playing around with it as I add every future song entry.

Each picture when selected will lead to the song entry and my words about that particular selection. Please feel free to have a look and let me know what you think :)

If I really don't look to obvious songs that are enormously atrocious by repeated artists and just look at this one, your list has a tendency to be close to my taste.
Of course, I cannot change your music preference, but songs I have selected are really beautiful and I really hope you will keep submitting something like those.
Thanks!

It was with Wix. They've got the basic templates but they're tailored more towards specific portfolios so I took one template I could work with, removed almost everything from it and then rebuilt it. There's still some glitches that I'm trying to overcome with different browsers.

I don't work much with coding or HTML anymore.

UPDATE

I've changed the website again since I was unhappy with the glitches and it started to look very amateur. Here is the link for the updated version for anyone who is interested.

I've still kept the montage elements but I have reformatted the site and reformatted each individual page's entries so that it is more user friendly on different browsers.

It's also a lot cleaner and users very basic colours. I'm still not up to date with my last 4 or 5 entries since I haven't focused on that aspect for now.

If anyone has any suggestion, please let me know and I will take them onboard for the next update.

Adam :)

Top 5 Favourite Songs
Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You
Björk - Jòga
Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up
Anderson Paak - Am I Wrong
Grinderman - No Pussy Blues
*BONUS: Burial - Archangel

Least 5 Favourite Songs or Songs I Didn't Particularly Care For
Jay Som - Baybee: By mistake, I sent the wrong Jay Som song. I like this but not as much as the other Jay Som song I had in mind
Metric - Help I'm Alive: I don't care for this song as much as I originally did
Jenny Hval - Spells: It's pleasant but I have no attachment to this song at all
Mbongwana Star - Malukayi: @TheCrow I'll explain this track because you were the only one to pick up on what I was going for
Crystal Castles - Celestica: I love Crystal Castles, I always planned on sending something by them but I should've picked a more abrasive song.

Previously withheld entries
Burial - Archangel: Originally submitted for Game 155: Tripping Balls but withdrawn because the video was removed
Metric - Help I'm Alive: This was originally submitted during the Pop era but I withdrew it given how badly anything that wasn't Pop was faring well
OutKast - SpottieOttieDopaliscious: Originally submitted for Game 163: The World Cup of Music
Sugababes - Freak Like Me: Originally submitted for Game 170: Attitude
Sly and the Family Stone - Everyday People: Originally submitted for Game 166: Urban Hymns
Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up: Also originally submitted for Urban Hymns
Grinderman - No Pussy Blues: Originally submitted for Game 158: Aussie Artists but withdrawn due to high amount of Nick Cave entries

Random Notes
Even though I was a lot more varied and mixed up my picks in terms of genres, years and style (compared to last year), I still believe I can be a lot more bold with choices. However, I do think this year was a lot better in sending more divisive songs that people either loved or hated rather than generic songs that people don't mind. I feel more content now when I get fair and appropriate negative reviews for songs (criticism that actually has merit rather than criticism for the sake of complaining) because at least the songs don't pander to the majority as much anymore.

Mbongwana Star: I can't help thinking of Randy Marsh' Lorde impersonation ("yayaya") in South Park when I listen to this song
OK, about this entry.

I saw Mbongwana Star at a festival a couple of years back. I had no real idea who they were but I loved their performance; it seemed eccentric but palatable and fun. I got back to the hotel room, streamed a couple of their songs and it didn't click with me at all. I left it at that.

Something Cheda didn't realise during that theme gift game he had when he gave me the Serbian theme was that I have relatives who live in Serbia so I had plenty of music to choose from from the get go. I asked them to send the most obscure stuff they knew; the weirder, the longer, the better. Some of it was downright bizarre. The best was this 40 minute long version of some patriotic song they used to sing at school in the 70s. I figured if he was gonna attempt to troll me, I'd troll right back. But I was really hesitant but I felt that Cheda may not have been behind the theme - he PMed me my second theme and warned me that I might hate the first theme, which was before Adey had made initial contact. And to be fair to Cheda, he did send some suggestions for songs for the Serbian theme.

I still had the Serbian choice on back burner in the event a foreign language theme came given I still intended to be a bit more provocative with my submissions especially if people were a bit offended by Grinderman and some off base comments about Burial, which I enjoyed. So when the foreign theme came around, I tried to find another similar version of the Serbian song I thought was long and tedious. I couldn't find any songs that fit. Then I remembered Mbongwana Star and sent it last minute.

I figured if people had comments about Burial, they were definitely gonna have comments about Mbongwana Star. I tried to find the longest song they had on Youtube and I stumbled on the first video. It was long, really repetitive, the song reminded me of ice cream truck music, I thought the singer's voice got more grating with every minute. I genuinely felt this had last place written all over it and contemplated not voting in the SF thinking this could actually go into the minus numbers. But there were no comments. Almost all the reviews seemed to like the song. Then I see the review above and I'm thinking "finally! someone has addressed the song "

Update

A bit of an update for the year. Looking back, I feel like this was my least enjoyable year playing the game. I lost motivation quite a few times and it really wasn't helped by some really lacklustre theme choices (for a while it seemed like every second theme was a complete dud), dwindling participation and several games where it seemed like there was no activity in the threads during active games. That's not to say there weren't any enjoyable games but they were few and far between. I also think this is the first year where quite a number of my song choices were forgettable and regrettable for reasons mentioned above. There are still some super choices I made that I'm happy with but I feel like this year's song selections aren't a great representation of my preferences for the most part.

I realised as I was cleaning up the thread that I'm now on 18 wins, which is one ahead of histeryGOAT. So that's something cool that I never thought I'd be able to achieve. No chance I'll hold onto the mantle for the 4+ years histery did but it will be a cool month at least before it is levelled.

Lastly, I have created a new site since I really didn't like the layout of the old one and it was amateur. I've tried for a cleaner aproach. It's still a work in progress. Most of the songs have an entry, which can be seen when the icon turns into the Mickey Mouse hand as you roll over the artist image. The rest are getting added gradually.

Great website! Can you do mine as well? ;)
Only if I get to the write ups as well. It'll be a variation of the following points:

  • Once again Adam did not like this song. What is wrong with him? Or what is up with my taste?
  • I nominated this song to attract Adam's attention after the last few weeks of 0 pointers from him. I got his attention. The song got 0 again :(
  • Of all the songs I nominated, this is the one that attracts double digits from Adam?
  • It's hard to enter diamonds in these games when everyone seems to be mining for coal and Adam is mining in the wrong playlist
  • This Arcade Fire song reminds me of Bruce Springsteen and for that reason, I'm out
