The Ultimate Tennis Book written by Gianni Clerici in 1974 (translated by Richard J Wiezell) put together a World Championship of Tennis draw (below) with successful players from the 1910's to the 1970's.

He used the results of a selected match between the players to stage this World Championships and to see how such a tournament would play out. It has constructed it in such a way that despite the different eras only the final match was unable to be have a result.

The draw has bolded the seeded players but not given seeded numbers next to them. We can surmise Lenglen is seeded #1, Connolly #2, King and Wills Moody #3 & #4 and Brough, Hart, Mallory and Jacobs are #5-8.

I will type this out in stages, due to the length of it and to keep everyone in suspense. Enjoy :)

So the Ultimate Tennis Book World Championship of Tennis 48 player draw is;

Suzanne Lenglen (FRA) vs BYE
Kitty Godfrey McKane (GBR) vs BYE
Dorothea Lambert-Chambers (GBR) vs BYE
Ethel Larcombe (GBR) vs BYE

Molla Mallory (NOR) vs BYE
Elizabeth Ryan (USA) vs BYE

I was worried that Suzanne was going to default from her quarterfinal match there after such a tough rouund of 16. :scared:

What a terrific lineup for the semifinals. Would've loved to see Bueno advance to the semis but Brough-Connolly will be a good encounter.

Three Americans and a Frenchwoman.

Semi Final Results
Suzanne Lenglen (FRA) def Helen Wills Moody (USA) 63 86 Cannes - 1926
MaureenConnolly(USA) def Louise Brough (USA) 75 63 W – 52 Final

Final
Suzanne Lenglen (FRA) vs Maureen Connolly (USA) – Not played

Unfortunately never played. Suzanne was adamant that as number one seed the match should be played on clay in France. Maureen wasn’t going to be upstaged and demanded the match be played in California on hardcourts. A compromise saw the final scheduled on the Wimbledon Centre but Papa Lenglen defaulted Suzanne from the final on the morning of the match saying that Suzanne was suffering from severe pneumonia and couldn’t get out of bed. Interestingly the day before Suzanne was seen playing 3 practice sets against her friend Elizabeth Ryan and only dropped a total of 6 points in 20 minutes but apparently not well enough to front the next day. One journalist suggested that Maureen’s coach Teach Tennant had Maureen give Suzanne some trash talk after the Ryan practice sets, to which Suzanne, ever the diva, was livid and declared that Maureen was not worthy to even grace the same court as her.

Few players are worthy to grace the same court as her. :worship:

Haha! This tourney makes no sense. The earlier generations are GUARANTEED to win.
Or the more recent generations. If more Ye Olde Tyme Players' complete results were known, it might be fun to see the chains of competition. Bencic played Serena who played Graf who played Wade who played...
