Where to start?
I suppose at the beginning. 1st up Alexandra Dulgheru shows us why so many people in this forum are excited about her and think she is going to soon be in the top 100 by making the quarterfinals in Warsaw (in her 1st ever WTA main draw) beating top 50 ranked clay court specialist Sara Errani for the best win of her career. Her results this week will drive her ranking to around 160 from outside the top 200 this week. Pretty good especially when one considers three months ago Alexandra was ranked a lowly 362. She is moving up fast. :rocker:
Then Raluca Olaru, like Dugheru a qualifier, beats the very powerful and talented Julia Goerges in a third set tiebreak. Raluca manages to do this despite at one point being 3-0 down in the 3rd set having lost a mind boggling nine games in a row. Not too many matches get won after having lost nine games in a row I think it is fair to say. This result will take Raluca comfortably back in the top 100 with a ranking probably in the top 90.
Then Monica Niculescu fights back from 0-3 down in the 3rd, like Raluca, and wins 6-4 in a very hard fought third set. With this win Monica confirms her dreadful slump of the last couple of months is history. Having already beating Daniilidou and Groenefeld previously this week and having already won 3 three set matches this week it is clear Monica is fighting fit again. :bounce:
As if all this isn't enough there is more...
In Roland Garros qualifying two more of Romania's talented youngsters scored impressive 1st round victories over higher ranked and much more experienced opponents. Irina-Camelia Begu had a great win over former top 100 player Mervana Jugic-Salkic beat her 6-2 6-4 in her 1st ever Grand Slam qualifying match. And Simona Halep, also in her 1st ever Grand Slam qualifying match had an even more impressive victory over former top world 31 Michaella Krajicek winning 6-4 7-5.
Today has been perhaps the best day for Romanian tennis since the heyday of Spirlea, Dragomir and Cristea. Both unlike then the great thing this time is that Romania have far more than three players to be excited about.
