OK, not certain at all, but I seem to remember that the AO used to be held at the end of the year. Perhaps it was held at the end of 1985, and they thought it too soon in the season to hold another Grand Slam a few months later, albeit in a different year.

Apologies in advance if this is the most ridiculous answer, but I can't think of anything else...

Snuffkin is right.

Melbourne used to be played in December. They held it at the end of 1985, and it would have been ridiculous to have to defend those lucritive points that soon after they earned them.

and there were 2 AUS OPEN's in 1977,

one in january and one in December when they made the change.

Players didn't like to play in December and the AUS OPEN didn't get good fields before Christmas.
