Hi,

I’d like to ask a question about the rankings. As I usually say, it might be a silly one, but I’m curious about it <img src="wink.gif" border="0">

Imagine this situation. A player has played 20 tournaments in 2001. So, only her 17 best results count for her ranking. Her three worst results are: 25, 20 and 15 points. So, while she hasn’t played 17 tournaments, these points are added in her ranking, so, when she plays her 18th tournament, as she gots more than 15 points, 15 points are substracted from her ranking, when she plays her 19th tournament, another 20 points are substracted from her ranking. And when she plays her last tournament of the year, she gets more than 25 points, so 25 points are substracted from her ranking. Is it right till now?

Now, in 2002, she just plays 17 tournaments, she doesn’t play the three tournaments where she got fewer points the previous year (to make it easier). But at the moment one of those tournaments is played, the 15, 20, and 25 points are substracted (I suppose they do that way). But, do they add those points in her ranking at any moment? (because they didn’t really count for her ranking the previous year...)

Well, I hope this is clear, lol!

Ah, and are there 32 seeds for all the Grand Slams of next year?

I don't know for sure about the ranking thing, I have the rules at home somewhere..

But I believe we have 32 seeds in each GS this year, yes.

Okay, let's see:

Up through 17 tournaments his year, her lowest 3 are 25, 20, 15. Then she adds 3 more tournament results. While the first one would only have to be above 15 to bump that last result off (as you stated), in actuality, it would have to be more than 25 points, if you want those 3 to all be bumped from her active ranking. In fact, all 3 "extra" tourneys would have to be over 25 points, so your new #17 is &gt25 points, and the 3 "leftover" results are the 25, 20, 15.

If she skips those events where she had earned 25, 20, & 15 points, those would be deleted from the end of her record. Her points total for the ranking would stay the same, with her total in the "18th tournament" column reading "0".

If she plays any of those tournaments, and replaces the 25, 20, or 15 (depending which tournament it is), the old total is dropped from her "extra" results, and the new one added where appropriate. Obviously, if the new points total is less than 25 points, it stays in the results that don't count, in numerical order. If the new point total is more than her current 17th tournament total, then that 17th point total is bumped into her 18th slot, with the other 2 unchanged results at 19th and 20th. For her active ranking total, her previous 17th total would be subtracted, and this new total added. (In reality, you're not getting rid of the result, you're just moving it out of the active total, with the new tournament points being inserted where they belong among the top 17.)
