A hypothetical match between 2019 Gauff vs today's Andreeva

1992 Views 53 Replies 34 Participants Last post by  JohnnyCat75
I only recently started deeply following tennis and can't imagine how a match between Gauff when she was 16 vs Mirra Andreeva, who is 16 today.
Both are phenomenal athletes, I like Gauff’s serve, backhand and volleys more and Andreeva's forehand and consistency more.

The reason why I am comparing the two is because they are both talented teens even though Gauff seems a veteran now and Gauff and Andreeva were both great players when they were 16.

Who do you think would win that match? I can't wait for AI to play out the match for me to see how wins.

What Mirra did at 15 (and into the first few days of her 16th year) at Madrid was more impressive than what Gauff did at Wimbledon 2019. Gauff beat a few journeywoman types. Andreeva beat Fernandez, Linette and Haddad Maia comfortably. That's two top 20s. Gauff had no chance to beat a top 20 that fortnight (still doesn't ;)).

not remotely the same level of competition. The only ranked player she beat at the time was Peng and she only had 1 win that entire year.

mirra would have taken 2-0 most likely. m. andreeva is playing tour level tennis atm. she is losing due to inexperience. I hope that she is in the hands of intellectually smart and technically educated coaches unlike Gauff.

Coco did barely beat washed up babos and hercog in the big tournaments. Mirra destroyed au open semi finalist linette and top 20 haddad maia. and osorio was the second best player in this draw.

This mirra might make a strange run in wimbledon with her talent.

Coco got 3 games from osaka, Mirra got 4 from sabalenka. Osaka was the Sabalenka of that time. here important thing is not to get a bagel from a star. i dont want to shade coco's linz title but it was one of the weirdest, won as a lucky loser and was highly endorsed by federer's pr company at that time. mirra destroyed haddad can be counted as bertens of today. linz took place in off season whereas madrid is in the middle of the calendar.
anyway forehand difference is giving mirra a major advantage.

What, beating a then 39 year old Venus wasn't impressive? ;)

Never saw these kind of threads for a kostyuk or anisimova. The racial bias is unreal.

They’re also 3 years apart in age so look for a 2020 Gauff.

Gauff was 15 at the Australian Open 2020 and beat defending champion Osaka, took a set off eventual champion Kenin in R16.

Andreeva has to back up Madrid. Gauff went to the YEC at 18 and Andreeva is 16 already, so she would have to be YEC by 2025
I dont care who would win since neither has won sh!t yet. Gauff's big win in her whole career is Trevisan, a journeywoman who is irrelevant. They just lucked into the same super weak half of 1 major
Andreeva has done nothing yet

Why are you conveniently leaving out the fact that Gauff beat Bertens, Petkovic and Ostapenko to win Linz as a 15 y.o.? It's right there at the image. Not to add that Gauff was more than a month away from turning 16 when she got her revenge over Osaka at the AO.

i didn't indeed. bertens victory is equal to haddad win of mirra. however i am inclined to overlook the Linz Run because the tournament took place in the off season. petko was a walking bye in 2019, bertens came after playing 80 matches and ostapenko was hitting 20 dfs per match at that time.

i was thinking she was 16 by the way relying on OP's message. Coco was out indeed in linz, she came back to main draw as a lucky loser. Samsonova could even beat her but there were a lot weird calls in that match. it happens in those indoors tournament tho lots of old line judges.

Naomi lost in AO open because of a mental choke. she was tripping and was pretty anxious before the match and she lost as a result. anyway the discussion is over who would win and i think mirra has a major advantage on the forehand side. both are hitting +180km serves and 157km in average.

Most likely Mirra wins but people have the tendency to hype up&comers and downgrade already established players. Both were teen phenoms in their own way and both have bright future.

plus if you remember hercog win, it was a major choke. babos match was won by the crowd hype. americans literally wanted and babos surrendered. she is a bad player. rybarikova quitted tennis in 2019, venus almost 40. mirra schooled linette and haddad. but it was in madrid hmmm. we can ignore madrid too indeed considering the altitude.

It's hilarious how you can find all these excuses for what doesn't suit your narrative and not feel ridiculous. Gauff's opponents had all these excuses, but the likes of Leylah, Haddad Maia, and Linette who have been garbage for most of this year are all the bestest wins ever. Hilarious.

there is no excuse because i watched all these tournaments and remember how coco won these matches with wear and tear than technical superiority. i just say mirra would beat coco of 16 years old on every surface for this reason.

It's tennis, sis, not darts. "Wear and tear" is part of the sport. Who is technically superior is at best partly relevant, because technical superiority is not all the sport is about - else Nadal wouldn't have 22 slams. It's just silly (and childish) to find all those excuses for all the players Gauff beat while claiming legitimacy only for Andreeva's wins over a couple of out-of-form grinders. It's an unserious argument.
