Anyone still watching the trophy ceremony knows what i mean!

:bigclap:

From the Associated Press release, here's what Venus said in the post-match interview.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Venus Williams won her 40th singles title Saturday, defeating Virginie Razzano of France 6-4, 6-2 in the final of the Dubai Tennis Championship.

During the trophy presentation, Williams spoke about Shahar Peer, the Israeli player who was denied entry into the United Arab Emirates for the tournament because of what organizers called security concerns.

[From post-match interview] " I felt like I had to talk about her, " Williams said. " I thought it was brave of her to come here and try and play despite knowing that it is not going to be easy for her. My dad grew up in an area where if you spoke too much, it was your life. So I felt I had a small opportunity to say something where everyone will listen. "

" I am not here to rock any boat or upset people, I am just here to do things that are right, " Williams said. " And I think right things are already happening next week and right things will happen next year. "

Peer was denied entry into the country a week ago. The WTA fined organizers of the tournament a record $300,000 Friday, saying it will compensate Peer and ensure other Israeli players aren't shut out of future events.

Re: A Big Round of applause for Venus WIlliams

She said it 'It has been a wonderful event but this year it has been difficult as one of our players didnt get to play here this time, but now all that has been resolved. Lets all hope to see Shahar Peer next time in this event '

Saying that in front of the whole Dubai crowd, Dubai royalty and tennis royalty in a very very classy way is just amazing.

Queen Venus

Nice touch from Venus in the speech at the end there.

Decent win for Venus really, she hasn't won many big hard court events over the last few years, so the YEC and now Dubai is surely a sign that she is getting some consistency and form back together?

Shame about the AO but she was unlucky to come up against an opponent playing the match of her life really.

Yeah well done Venus! Such a class act.

It is sad though that Venus didn't play like this at the Australian Open. I think that's what is kind of perplexing about Venus. She plays well when no one expects her to. This week I did not think she was going to win the event I thought Serena was going to. But good win for Venus and glad she won her 40th WTA tour title.

Venus is such a class act. Gracious thanks to sponsors, but mentioning the Peer situation too - important that someone did and well done to Venus. Razzano put up a good fight, decent final, but Venus has gone up even more in my estimation for making the point about Peer.

That was great of Venus to mention Shahar Peer and hope Peer will be there next year playing in the tournament.

Yeah. I was thinking the same thing. What a great player's rep and such a classy way to handle the whole situation.

And to make that point, right there in front of the supposedly discriminatory crowd, the sponsors, and the tournament organizers: Bravo!:worship:

I agree-Venus is, and always has been a class act.
She wasn't just preaching to the choir either-she spoke up at the right time in front of the right people that needed to hear it, and did it in a respectful way.
