Martina, Kim, Serena, Justine, Jelena, Amelie, Monica.

#4 - #10

Based on 2001 head-to-head records, if any of this group of players isplaying any other member of this group of players, can you be SURE who'll win?

If so, which matchup?

Seems to me that when you get right down to it, there's not a whole lot to choose between these seven players. Martina's been having some trouble, but she's performing like at least a top eight player.

As if you were sure of the result if any of these girls met one of the top three...

Serena would probably beat all the others but Monica and Martina might beat her!

Actually Julien, I AM pretty sure of the result if any of those girls play the top three.

I would bet my last hundred on Venus against any of them. All would lose to Venus.

I would bet my last hundred on Lindsay against any of them except Serena. But if the opponent was Kim, I'd try to hedge my bet.

Jenn .... the Jenn who started season or the Jenn who ended it? The player who ended the year was one of the five best players in the world. The player who started the year was one of the two best. Big difference this year.

Right now, Serena would beat every one else.
Monica would probably be second, followed by Kim.
Jelena will probably be fourth and followed by Justine then Amelie. Martina is injured, so you can't really tell how she'll do.

Against the top 3, right now, no one should beat Venus, and only Serena should beat Davenport. Monica, Serena, Kim and Justine may beat Capriati. So right now, the top 10 is very competitive. It'll be interesting to see if they can keep up the competition next year

In the form Kim was in at the last part of the season, she would probably have beaten each one of them (except maybe for Serena). And I wouldn't be that sure that each of the top 3 would have beaten Kim.

Do you follow tennis (wta)? Obviously you don't follow it closely. Although Martina is number 4, I still think she's a top 3/4 player and is obviously in a slight slump right now, but Serena and Monica are definitedly heads and shoulders above every one else in that group, especially Serena. The only reason why Serena and Monical are in that group is because they didn't play more this year, don't forget Monica missed both the French and Wimbledon. And Serena has what, something like a 4-1 advantage over Monica, has never lost to Kim, Justine, Jelena or Amelie and also hold an almost even record with Hingis. Who ever started this post needs to go back and study the facts. Martina, Monica and especially Serena are heads and shoulders above the rest in this group.

Monica had an early loss to Amelie this year and Serena had a couple to Martina, but both are much improved now and probably would head that group.

Serena and Monica are 1-1 this year and anyone who saw their most recent match would know there's not much between either of them on the court nowadays.

i saw there last match, in toronto.

It was a good match, serena winning 7-5 7-6, i think. it was close, and monica was extreamly tired from coming off the injury and playing something like 5 weeks on the trot.

i'd like to see serena and monica play against eachother in melbourne, it would be a great match.

As for this topic, i think anyone in the top 10 could beat anyone, say like jelena could beat venus and lindsay on clay i guess.

but for hard courts it much more difficult, but achievable and very much so possible.

Do you follow tennis (wta)?
How can you say they're head and shoulders above the others?
Martina lost to Kim and Amelie this year. Monica had a very difficult match against Justine at the OZ, which was in the beginning of the year; Justine improved since then and she got more experience, the only thing she needed to win that match. Monica didn't play a lot after that, she didn't play against Kim or Justine anymore, maybe she played against he others, but I doubt that. I'm pretty sure Kim would have beaten her at the end of the year.
Serena is maybe the best of the group mentioned above, but 'with head and shoulders'. She had already problems with Kim at the USO she won (1999) and I think Martina, Kim, Justine, Dokic, Amelie and Monica would beat her all on clay.

Those you mentioned have had the best results in the PAST, but that doesn't mean they would beat the youngsters TODAY.
Watch some more tennis and you'll see.

That isn't winning 'with head and shoulders above', huh?
They played eachother three times, two times this year, and their matches are always very close.
You can't say Justine has no chance of beating her, can you?

Well no, i think all of the top 10 has chances of beating anyone in the top 10, but Monica seems to have a psycological effect over justine, and i personaly feel that when monica plays justine that she will probably win, just like when venus, lindsay, serena play monica i would normally think venus, lindsay or serena would win.

thats all

At this point I think Serena would beat all of them; followed closely by Seles; the rest is a toss up.

It's not Justine's game that is lacking against Monica or Serena - in fact she has the game to beat them - it's her mental strength that I think could do with some serious adjustment.

She's had some serious collapses in grand slams this year (Clijsters, Seles) - although I concede against Capriati she came back beautifully.

I only saw the first set against Monica in Toronto, and I thought that Justine was going to wrap it up in less than an hour.

I later was (happily) shocked to discover that Monica had won.

Can someone who saw the whole match please explain to me how on earth Justine, brilliant as she was in the first set, managed not to win when Monica was looking shattered having played once that day already ?

Bottom-line : Monica Seles = Champion who knows what it takes to win .

End of story
