Women's AU Tour begins in Cairns
The women's Australian Unity Tour begins in Cairns this week and will be
headlined by Victoria's Christina Wheeler (ranked 180 in the world), NSW's
Bryanne Stewart (204) and Queensland's Lisa McShea (234). Players looking
to upset the seeds include Jaslyn Hewitt (SA), Amanda Grahame (ACT) and
Optus Achiever Squad member, Melissa Dowse (NSW). There will also be
considerable interest in the progress of Queenslander Samantha Stosur,
seeded No.1 in the qualifying event. Stosur is returning after a brilliant
month in Japan where she won three out of four finals in singles and
doubles. The Australian Unity International in Cairns is the first leg of
the three-week circuit, which will also travel to Home Hill and Mackay.
Players are battling for prizemoney, ranking points and wildcards into
Australian Open 2002. These will be awarded to the two highest placed women
at the end of the 2001 AU Tour, which includes Challengers at Victoria and
NSW earlier in the year and in South Australia from November 11. Check out
the latest AU results at

Travel grants
Travel vouchers will be awarded to a dozen young Australians competing in
the Australian Unity Challenger events in Queensland and South Australia.
Worth $300, the Tennis Australia Travel Vouchers will go to Kim Coventry,
Sevvy Gallios, Lauren Breadmore, Beti Sekulovski, Dubravka Cupac, Gabrielle
Baker, Lauren Cheung, Nicole Kriz, Jaslyn Hewitt, Jenny Belobradjic,
Rebecca Pike and Asha Burns. In addition, National Women's Development
Coach John Trickey will be on site to hold daily Aussie squad training

What a joke as if Jaslyn needs $300, no offense but there were more worthy players than most of these on the list. I feel that the full time players struggling to make ends meat need the money more. Like Mireille Dittmann, Kristin Van Elden, Cindy Watson, Michelle Summerside, Monique Adamzcak etc.

Only Belobradjic, Kriz and Sekulowski deserved them.

Also where's Nadia Johnston? Melanie Clayton? Kerry-Anee Guse?

What a joke!

All my faves out except Kaori!
And now Kaori has to face the 2nd seed.

How could Akko-chan lose to Nicole Rencken, after just winning Saga. I guess it's the transition from grass to hard. Same with Shihorin and Ayami-chan losing to players who have had a very ordinary year.

Hope Akko can rebound next week. Very disappointing.
