So you seeding experts whats this 17 seeding do for the queen? Does it help more than hurt?
She would have been #25, which puts her where she was at Wimbledon (aka one seed short of the next bracket). That would have forced her into a R3 against a Top 8 player (Kerber, Halep, Stephens, Kvitova, Svitolina, eek) like her 2011 match with Fridge. Now she cannot face a Top 8 player until one round later. Avoiding #13-16 means she's not guaranteed to face a Top 4 player in R16. There's still a 50/50 shot of that happening anyways.

R3 will be against someone from the #9 to #16 range. Problematic people in that range include Veesus, Mug, Keys, and Bertens (though the former 3 are in questionable form). In R16, hopefully she gets Gorges again (or Daria/Bratpenko). Garcia & Borz would be her ideal R16. Whomever, she doesn't draw, could also be her QF. Ideally, her high seeds till the SFs are Gorges, Garcia, & Borz.

Basically, she has more cushion and protection from the top girls for a bit longer. Given the history of the WTA slams the last 5-6 years, that can be a world of difference given that the amount of top girls thins out considerably as the draw progresses. Don't let the NID hysteria around this decision fool you tho, she was 1 ranking spot away from earning this entirely by herself. #24 seed is effectively the same as the #17 seed (unless there are WDs, in which you would be first in line to be bumped up to the next bracket).
