Thu May 8, 6:38 AM ET

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina - Investigators have exhumed 23 bodies believed to be victims of the July 1995 Srebrenica massacre during the Bosnian war, an official said Thursday.

According to the Muslim Commission for Missing Persons, the bodies were found on Wednesday buried near the village of Kamenica, about 45 miles northeast of Sarajevo.

Srebrenica was a Muslim enclave that fell to Bosnian Serb forces near the end of the 1992-95 war.

Some 8,000 Muslims, mostly men and boys, disappeared and are believed to have been executed by Bosnian Serb soldiers in Europe's worst massacre of civilians since World War II.

So far, more than 5,000 bodies of Srebrenica victims have been exhumed from various mass graves and other locations around Bosnia.

The bodies found Wednesday were to undergo DNA analysis in an effort to identify them.
