Tournament News
Today the Edinburgh Exibition Championship started with some exciting matches and big upsets.
First on Centre Court was the 1st seed in the tournament Napaporn Tongsalee facing the german Angelika Roesch. It was the opposite of routine as Angie took the second set to love but the Thai took the final set to take the match 6-3 0-6 6-3.
The upset of the day was when on centre court the second seed Tamarine Tanasugarn fell apart to the unranked Rita Grande in straight sets 6-3 6-2. Everything and anything did not want to go to the 2nd seed's way. This must be her worst loss ever even though it is in an exibition tournament.
The Battle of the Brits was full of people on Centre Court and it did not lack power and fabulous shots by both players. The first two sets were dominated by both players but in the final set it was topsy-turvy with both players taking leads and dropping them. Finally at 7-6 in the third the higher ranked brit O'Donoghue took the match 6-2 1-6 8-6. Each player should be proud of how they slugged it out.
Only two matches were played on Court One and the court should have been called Upsets Galore! Both seeds collapsed to lesser foes. Silvia Farina Elia did not show any sign of nervousness in the match winning the first set six games to one but the Indonesian Widjaja fought back to take a 5-4 lead and was broken after 3 deuces. Elia knew if she wanted to win the match it would be then and there and she did win 1 and 6.
The Final Match of the day featured a three set battle in which the upset proved worthy as the russian Elena Bovina beat the 3rd seed in the tournament Eleni Daniilidou 7-6(3) 0-6 6-1. If Bovina gets through the round robin she must strenghten her first set as Daniilidou had a 5-3 lead.
This first day shows signs of one of the best exibitions ever held. But will the pressure get to the players? We will find out tomorrow!

Tournament News
Today the Edinburgh Exibition Championship the crowds were filling in to watch some exciting tennis matches.
The Notable news about today was that the 3rd seed of the tournament Angelique Widjaja fell to a surprising 0-2 against Barbara Schett who was playing her first match in Edinburgh. Babsi is off to a great start but Widjaja must win all of her remaining matches to have a chance at the playoffs.
Long sets were on both courts. First Jane O'Donoghue the crowd favourite pushed the number one seed Tanasugarn to 8-6 in the third before Tamarine picked up her groudstrokes and prevailed.
The Longest match of the tournament featured last on Center Court with Eleni Daniilidou knocking Rita Grande out of the match with a 7-6 6-7 16-14 match. Grande looked like she was going to take the match will all of the momentum after a set and a half but the experience and the shots of the greek pulled through tightly in a three set marathon that went over 3 hours.
Last match on Court One was a screwed up match with extreme errors but both players knew that they wanted that final set and they had to bring out all the cards. It showed with some fabulous winners we didn't see in the first two sets. The pressure got to the brit Amanda Janes as Elena Bovina smacked the overhead down the line to win and be first in her group as Janes fell to last.
The other match that went on was a routine win for Silvia Farina Elia over the number one seed Napaporn Tongsalee 6-3 6-2. Tongsalee looked a bit lets say tired against Elia. The Italian put the pressure on early in both sets taking the early break and the Thai couldn't recover.
What's next for all of the players? We will see tomorrow!!
