In a day with many walkovers, due to inactive WGTA players, the only singles match of the day was Martina hingis vs. Kimiko Date.

Hingis started off strong, pushing Date around the court and forcing many errors off of the backhand side. After breaking for 5-2, Hingis falters and allowed Date to push back to 5-4, but then sealed up the first set with a backhand swing volley winner smacked sharply cross-court.

In the second set everything went on serve until 4 all, when Date unleashed 3 mighty aces in a row, then continued to shine as she won 7 straight points to break Hingis and take the second set.

The third set began with Hingis taking a 3-0 lead, before Date clawed herself to 5-3. Then Hingis' superior mental state allowed her to send the set to a tb, which she finally won 9-7 when Kimiko's forehand pass down the line just went wide.

The doubles match featured today, Kim Clijsters and Jelena Dokic sneaked past Iorda Tulyaganova and Anna Kournikova 3-6 7-5 7-5, in a match full of cat fights, argued line calls, and beautiful volleyers, *cough* volleys. DAY 2 Action promises to be thirlling, with the top half of the singles draw in action.

2002 SARATOV NOTES
THURSDAY

In doubles Angeles and Martina win in 3 tight sets or Angelique and Lindsay

Last week's champion Daniela Hantuchova moves on but last week's finalist Angeles Montolio was the only seed to lose.

The match of the day was the Davenport-Sabatini match which took 2 hours and 56 minutes to complete as it went 3 tiebreaks! Good match to both!

Congrats to all winners and better luck next time to the others!

Tomorrow ALL of the Quarter Final matches will be played in Singles and only one doubles semi final will be played tomorrow.

FRIDAY

The top seeds in Singles and Doubles lost today.

The match of the day was Anna Smashnova defeating Mary Pierce in 3 tight sets in 2.12!

Congratulations to all the winners and better luck next time for the others.

Tomorrow the Semi Finals of the singles will be played and the other semi of the doubles will be played also.

Martina Hingis will play Magdalena Grzybowska in the Saratov Final. This should be an exciting match to watch. Here is what Martina had to say about playing Grzybowska in this finale. "I feel confident, she's played well all week, but so have I. You never know what will happen, but I hope I can win this match." Mag said "I hope i can win this crucial match in my career. Martina can make the big shots but i just have to stay positive!"

In the doubles final Angeles Montolio and Martina Hingis face Jelena Dokic and Kim Clijsters. This should be a very tight match for the both of them. Angeles and Martina said " We feel good about it, We are an amazing pair , and we cover each others weaknesses. I've played Kim and Jelena before, so I'm not worried. I've sort of been exacting revenge on everyone this week(laughter), so I don't see why I should stop now." Watch out Sunday cause these finals are going to be fantastic!
