Hingis Has High Hopes for Saratov



Former WGTA world #4 Martina Hingis, has high hopes at Saratov. After her hopes were dashed last week by Dokic in the Quarterfinals, Hingis went back to Switzerland to train hard.



" I feel my game is at the place where I can compete with these girls. It's really competitive out there right now, the rankings have been flip-flopping back and forth" Hingis said in a press conference earlier this week.


Martina Hingis will open her bid to take home the Wendy's Tennis Cup against Kimiko Date, who is no pushover. Hingis is also partnering with good friend Angeles Montolio, hoping to capture their first title together as well.


"Angeles and I are good friends, and our styles compliment each other very well in doubles. She's doing very well in singles too, so hopefully that will play in our favour."

WGTA Wendy's Tennis Cup Promises To Be a Stellar Tournament



Saratov(AP)---- In only the third tournament on the WGTA Schedule, there have been some fantastic matches, and surprising results. In the Eurasia Cup, Angeles Montolio, Mary Pierce, Martina Hingis, and Jelena Dokic seperated themselves from the pack to set up the first semifinals of WGTA. Since then leading into this tournament, of the four only Montolio and Dokic have managed to hold onto seeding,s with Pierce and Hingis stumbling in Indonesia.


Favorite and new world #1 Daniela Hantuchova surprised then world #1 Dokic in upsetting the Yugoslav second round in Jakarta, and tore through the rest of the field to capture her first WGTA title.

Second seed Jelena Dokic can't be discounted either, the young Yugoslav has been steady for the msot part in the first two tournaments, and will be out for blood this week in Saratov to reclaim her #1 ranking.

Third seed Angeles Montolio has been the most consistant so far, reaching a semi-final and a final, and she doesn't look to be slowing down. Anyone who has her in their quarter better be on their toes, and on their game if they hope to beat the fiesty Spaniard.

Israeli Anna Smashnova knabbed the 4th seed in Russia, mainly in part to her semi-final appearance last week in Jakarta, Indonesia. The back-court player who gets EVERYTHING back should have little trouble getting throguh her section, setting up and interesting semi-final with Jelena Dokic.


Whatever happens, the WGTA is off to an excellent start, so ladies and gentleman, sit back and enjoy the tournament, as it's going to be a thrilling one with beautiful tennis galore.
