2002 tennis - not very good so far?

I mean, come on. Every tournament has been Martina or Venus, Martina or Venus, Martina or Venus. Except the Australian Open, which I'm not getting into...

But the best players on tour (Venus, Serena, Lindsay, Martina) haven't had ONE match-up! Hingis and Venus have played 8 tournaments so far and haven't met-up once. Serena and Lindsay won't be playing anyone for awhile! And worst of all, Justine and Martina won't play eachother for a while...maybe at Miami.

I mean, I want some of those classic rivalries. I want a Martina vs. Justine/Venus. I anticipate a Lindsay vs. Kim. Where is my Serena vs. Martina?

Other than the Hingis vs. Seles matches, every single match this year has been a snoozer. (Except that OZ final, which I do not talk about).

Oh well. Maybe at Scottsdale, I will see something worth watching?

The Venus vs. Justine was great
I think it's been great so far.

The resurgence of Seles, beating Venus at the Australian Open in probably one of the best matches of the tournament.

Kournikova is back on the secne and playing some great tennis.

Stevenson has started to come through this year, beating Capriati, Coetzer.

Justine has been consistent, Kim making the semis at the AO.

Martina is back with more confidence than ever and playing terrific. Jen defends her AO Crown, something not many people expected.

Shaughnessy puts in a great performance in Sydney.

Hantuchova announces her name to the world.

Smashnova proves that you don't have to be big to win, Tanasugarn starts with solid performances.

Danilidou is another one to watch, with her flairsome game.

Jelena Dokic returns to beat Dementieva and Seles to make the final in Paris.

Mauresmo takes Venus to 3 sets.

Pierce returns and will no doubt be a force

It's just getting started

Too true Rocksteady. No comment for the AO, it was really a big dissapointment. It was really was lacking fire. I want to see Martina vs. Justine, or Venus vs Martina. Lindsay vs Serena. Although I'm happy that Venus, and Martina has won these tournies. I wan't some action. I wan't a good nail biter with of course my fave pulling it out.;) But it wouldn't matter either way, just give me some fire!!!!!!!
Jennifer wins the Aussie over Martina in an historic match. Monica beats Venus for the first time and has one title, one final and 2 semis. Venus wins 2 titles and closes in on #1. Martina cranks up her serve and shows she is ready to challenge.

I think so far this year rocks, steady.
[email protected] with I think so far this year rocks, steady. Real cute!!!! Yes, all that is great I just haven't seen any nail biters. The final at AO was good, but you knew Martina lost after conceding the 2nd set.
Well,i'm a Martian and i can say that i'm happy with how things are going because Martina is doing great. But i DO have to say that i'm waiting for the classic matches.
A classic match for me is Martina-Venus or Martina-Serena.
Matches against Monica,Jennifer or other topplayers are great but for me it doesn't come near to a Marti-Venus or Marti-Serena match.
I kind of agree with RockSteady but I would say 'have faith', it's only just begun.

I want to see the the Lindsay/Venus rivalries, the Kim/Serena the Monica/Jenn type affairs, but what I also hope to see this year (but not sure if I will) is the 11-25 really taking it to the Top Ten.
I think Hingis fans have an easier time understanding me. As a Hingis fan, I anticipate her matches against the Williams', Davenport, and am STILL waiting for her to play Henin. She could play Serena at Scottsdale...
I agree with ILUVJELENA
Martina- Justine would be tenis at its best! They would have met in Filderstadt in Martina hadnt gotten injured, and if she beat Davenport. I also want to see some less one-sided Clijsters-Henin matches. Martina- Willaims and Davey would be awesome, but it always seems that these matches happen only once or twice.
It is still early in the year!

There have been some good matches though.

Seles vs. Williams @ the Oz.

Capriati vs. Hingis @ the Oz.

Hantuchova vs. Williams @ the Oz.

Kournikova vs. Dementieva @ the Pan Pacific.

Seles vs. Hingis @ the Pan Pacific.

Smashnova winning two titles in a row.

Dokic beating Seles for the first time @ Paris.

Williams vs. Henin @ Antwerp.

I think the worst thing about tennis this year is that other than AO, I haven't seen any of it. :(
The coverage still sucks, IMO.
As for the rest of it, blame injuries...
I have heard this one a thousand times. I remember about this time in 2000 it was "Martina/Lindsay Martina/Lindsay".

Other players will step up, again. It's as sure as sunrise.
What the hell are you talking about? Not very good?

I agree with ILUVJELENA and apoet.

I mean, sure. We're all waiting for the Martina/Venus, Martina/Serena, Martina/Lindsay matches. But there's been nothing wrong with the Venus vs Monica, or the Martina vs Monicas matches.

Anna's really had a go at Monica and Serena. And she had a good win over Elena D.

There have been plenty of good matches already. Too many of some in fact.
I, for one, would like to see LESS Justine vs Kim matches.
For me, I think Jen's play has given me a lot of excitement this year already. Winning the HK Exhibition after trailing Elena 1-6 0-1 in the final; losing to Alex Stevenson in 2R of Sydney which caused a lot of doubts to her personal health, stamina and conditionings for the AO; playing the AO with hip injury throughout; regaining the No.1; saved 4 MPs before beating Martina; Defending her GS that I think even all Jenn fans and herself can't believe...and she's losing the No.1 ranking next week, so she's the hunter for it again!:) I think this is a very exciting year~:)
Its just been 2 months!Anyway its been great for me monica getting to the semis of Aus beating Venus and moving from 10 to 6 in the rankings YEAH!:D
Mark35 and disposablehero are spot on (as usual)...Plenty of fun matches so far, and plenty more to come.

Go Monica!:)
There have been too many injured players at the top: first of all poor Lindsay, she didn't play a match; Serena's ankle; Venus still troubled time to time by her knee; Kim's arm (stress fracture!); Jen's hip, allthough it didn't seem to bother her at the OZ and since last week Jelena's thigh.

Only Martina (only one out of the top 5; she made three finals, won two), Justine, Monica and Amelie were injury-free and were able to give there all.
Only four out of ten!

The semis and the final were great matches at the OZ, the final in Antwerp was great, but that's about it for me.

The new number one Venus hasn't played a top 5 player yet.

I hope all the injured payers recover well, so we finally can see the REAL thing.
