Finally got the tallies. Just doing some final dividing as I go. First up, using the 1992 points:

It is interesting, this one you listed...

Average- no Min.
1. V.Williams- 219.25
2. Davenport- 212.18
3. Capriati- 177.15
4. S.Williams- 167.10
5. Hingis- 150.24
6. Mauresmo- 125.22
7. Seles- 125.18
8. Clijsters- 101.84
9. Henin- 88.95
10. Dokic- 80.75

...sounds about right to me.

Thanks for compiling this Brian, must've been quite a bit of work

Under this system "Average- no Min." you could play a few tier I events win them and be #1. Of course this doesn't happen, but technically it could. Also note that system discourages players to play more (in case they get bad results) that might bring down their averages. It will be a disaster for the game if the top players play only a few tournaments.

Average- Min. 14
1. Davenport- 212.18
2. V.Williams- 187.93
3. Capriati- 177.15
4. Hingis- 150.24
5. Mauresmo- 125.22
6. Seles- 125.18
7. S.Williams- 119.36
8. Clijsters- 101.84
9. Henin- 88.95
10. Dokic- 80.75

This sounds about right to me, it actually encourages players to play at least 14 tournaments (that's not a big ask is it?)

Indeed, thanks a lot Brian!

It is very interesting... obviously it's no surprise to see Venus as #1 with the 'no min' stats. as her winning percentage is so great.

And it's there to be seen that Venus is not doing so well over a rolling 52 weeks.

Thanks once again Brian, unfortunately I think we are still going to see arguments over min. number of tournaments, and how many tournaments need to be played in a year to get a full impression of a player's dominance.

This is just a side note. But I found something that may be of interest to some.

I only have the points for 2002, but was able to project Martina Navratilova's record from 1987.

using the 2002 point allocation, this is how it panned out

Tournaments...12
Points..3783
Ave, Min 12..315.25
14...270.21
16..236.43
17..222.52
18..210.16.

Unfortunately, I am unable to put Quality points in, as I don't know the rankings at the time.

I'm going to do her 2 STELLAR years now and bring you the results of them, but they will also be without Quality points.

I will also reproduce Graf's 88.

It is probably a bit pointless, but interesting to read though for some

This is 1983...using the lower points from each Tier and no quality points...

Tournaments played...17
Points..5735

This would be the least amount of points that could of been allocated to her. Remembering, that even though I am using 2002 points, Quality points are not being added and I am presuming that she played the lower end of each Tier (Which is unlikely).

I'll do 84 tomorrow and Graf's 88 as well.

I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of Adrian's numbers. My guess is, with quality points (and Navratilova's tendency to play the biggest events against the highest-ranked players), she should be well over 7000 points. You could probably fudge some approximate rankings for Q points in one of two ways:
(a) compare the previous year-end ranking of each player to the year in question, and prorate the difference. This would give a very rough approximation. For example, if a player finished 1982 at #30, and 1983 at #20, at the mid-point of the 1983 season, you could guess her at being about #25.
(b) check the seedings for all of the tournaments around a given one, and get an approximate order for the players.

If you're really a glutton for punishment, you could just calculate round points for everyone for the 52 weeks to date, and use that as your ranking order throughout the season.

Now, on to the other years.
1993 points:

Thanks Brian! Looking at the results, it's clear to me that the 1992 points, averaged with a minimum of 14 or 16, provide the most accurate results

The one consistent thread (which should be brought to the attention of the tennis media) is that under no ranking system (best 17, 18, rolling, average) or points allocation used in the past decade does Capriati pass Davenport. In fact, she gets closest under the 2001 format.

The other interesting thing is at a 14 Minimum, Davenport passes Venus in every year's points until 1998 (which is the same as 2001 points for Venus and Lindsay, as neither played below Tier II). So, for those who argued that Venus and/or Jen should be ahead of Lindsay, it is the current points scheme that gives them their best performances relative to hers.
