It would have to be Hingis first round at Wimbledon. The only thing I choose this over Venus first round loss at French is becuase Schett is a good player and I think she was ranked like 20 or something. But came Wimbledon when the seedings where change and you would think the top players would have an easy time getting to the next round.

Hingis loss at OZ 2001 to Jennifer Capriati, who she has spanked many times before.

Hingis loss to Virginie at Wimby

Hingis loss to Serena Williams at US Open. She didn't imho know how to think out there. In fact I never saw some of the most ugliest approach shots in awhile.

Venus loss wasn't shocking to me because Babsi can play on clay and Venus's surface is not clay. Oh Venus beat Cap at Ericsson.. shocking loss to Jen cap.

Seles to bandenova

ah and also, like the person who mentioned before,
hingis lost against capriati at the aus open was very disappointing... hingis defeated both williams, and we all know capriati's difficulties against them.. but hingis even lost.. in straight sets also..
I was very disappointed.....................

The most obvious are Hingis and Venus losing first round at W + FO. But I was really shocked when Monica lost 4th round at the US to Bedanova. I mean who is this player? In the next match she got killed by Hingis. At least I had heard of Ruano-Pasqual and Schett before.

Also I was shocked by Venus losing to Meghan Shaunesshy.

My choice will go to Mauresmo lost to Kandarr at FO first round.
Dementieva lost to Mikaelian at Zurich first round also shocked me.

Although it wasn't a huge upset..
Venus losing 1 and 1 to Hingis, was indeed shocking.
I had expected a classic three set battle out of this one. Granted Venus was a little rustier than Martina, but still!

When I first read the score on the internet (I'm rather glad i didn't see the match. I had wanted Martina to win, but not like that!), I thought it was a typo. I had to check serveral resources before I would beleive it!

Mauresmo's first round loss at the French Open. Especially after winning 4 tournaments before. *sigh*

Seles lost to Bedanova at the US Open - I though Seles would win the match because she reached QF in past 5 years!

Dokic lost to Mandula at Roland Garros - Who hell is this person? I though Dokic have good chance to win Roland Garros!

Hingis lost to Ruano-Pascal at Wimbledon - What a great victory for Ruano-Pascal! But I still shocked because Hingis was No. 1 at the time!

V. Williams lost Hingis at Australian Open - What a tragic match! I can't believe that Venus played terrible in the match!

Mine would have to be Shaughnessy over Venus, not so much looking on paper at the upset (Shaughnessy had a great year, top 15, quite consistent with a few bigger wins along the way aswell), but Venus was playing some great tennis (and continued to do so after the loss), and Meghann found a way to win.

The fact that Venus was pushed was no shocked, Meghann proved she could hang with Venus at the US Open in 2000. But I didn't think that Meghann would be ready to get a win over Venus just yet especially when Venus was on her game and it was going down to the wire. When you go to a 3rd set tiebreaker between Venus and anyone I think Venus is a fave because she is just so mentally tough out there. For Meghann to hang in there and stay just as tough, and not allow nerves, or the big moment of being so close to an upset get to her was terrific.

Billabong why Hingis on grass? Imho this loss was no shocker because she hasn't done much of anything before the tourney/slam started. Ok so it was a bit of a shocker but Hingis's game is attackable on grass. No I truley believe that the most shocking of them all was when Martina(who won many OZ slams before) got thrashed by Jennifer Capriati. I also think even Hingis may even feel that that was the most shocking Slam final. Afterall her game has plummeted every since. But she will bounce back though.

Randy I disagree with you about Meghan because it wasn't a slam loss. and also Venus can spray balls and lose focus at times. And that was ended in a tiebreaker. Schett's loss imho was a more of a shocker than Meghan's.

The reason I don't consider Schett's win such a huge shocker is because she is a very dangerous outsider, who really could just of easily been a top 16 seed, but unfortunately drew Venus right off the bat. It's not too often you see such a matchup, and generally you see players sort of work their way into a tournament, even Venus you will see maybe not play her greatest tennis in the first couple rounds, spraying a lot, but once she gets a couple of matches under her belt she moves into gear. For someone trying to work their way into a tournament, on a surface that certainly isn't their favourite, I don't think a loss to someone of Schett's calibre was that shocking because it probably wasn't Venus at her best. In the case of Meghann, Venus had a lot of matches under her belt recently, it wasn't her first match of the tournament, and it wasn't like it was a blowout. The shock was that Meghann didn't let up in the tight situation and pulled out a very very close match against Venus, which is something that very rarely occurs (As we've seen in another topic, Venus had lost only 9 times in the last 2 years, and only 3 of those times did she lose it in a 3 setter...None of which went down to the wire that much).

I guess Randy but I still disagree Losing in a slam has much more emphasis than a tier tourney. Seems that the higher ranked players should win those. No matter who they face.

Still Hingis demise at OZ 2001 was a huge shocker to me and to her and imho to alot of tennis fans. I feel that she really thought she had that one in the bag.

Schett beating Venus at RG wasn't a shock. The only 'shock' was that it came in the first round - that the match-up happened in the first round.

Mauresmo going out 1st at RG to Jana Kandarr was a VERY big loss. Not only the fact that she lost, but the manner of defeat.

Hingis VRP. Yes at the time it was, like 'Wow', but Hingis' record at Wimbledon (apart from winning it) is not that great. But yes, that was shock loss.

Another one for Hingis: The demolition she suffered at the hands of Dementieva in Moscow was a bit of a shock to the system for me.

Bedanova over Seles too. Seles had been on a really hot streak...

I have two more: Jenny losing to Testud in Filderstadt and then again in Munich was very dissapointing, cause she lost the # 1 spot.
