WRAP UP!

On a week filled with controversy, attention was once again on the tennis today as the international events in France and Thailand got down to the
business end of their respective tournaments.

The most heated location of all was Calais, France where 8 of the world's top 10 players were battling it out at the International Peugeot Championships of France. With $ 90,000 US$ on the line and brand new Peugeot for the winner, all competitors were at their best this week.

Today saw the playing of the womens singles semi finals and the womens doubles final. Feauting the best players in the world, it was a great line-up as the fans flocked to the Calaishalle where the action took place.

First up on court was newly crowned Sanex FWTA Champion, Magdalena Grzybowska of Poland who took on talented Brit, Anne Keothavong.

It started off well for the talented Brit, who had not lost a set en route to the semi finals. Keothavong has had a breakthrough week, where she stunned spectators and opponents alike on her way to the semi finals. She defeated world no 4 Gala Leon Garcia in straight sets. Grzybowska, however, is a formidable opponent and her recent victories at the US Open and Sanex FWTA Championships proved that she would be a force here in Calais. Vying for the top spot, Grzybowska was going to be extremely hard to beat.
Keothavong however, started on fire, breaking Grzybowska twice to capture the opening set 6-2. She then quickly raced to a 4-1 2nd set lead when at 15-30, she suffered a bad line call that seemed to turn the match.
Grzybowska's confidence was now lifting and she captured 4 straight games and looked like taking the 2nd set quite comfortable.
The plucky Brit however managed to force the tiebreak and gave herself every opportunity but wasted 3 match pts.
As the 3rd set began to unfold, it was clear that there was only 1 player on court as Grzybowska used her tremendous power to out hit Keothavong and advance to her second straight tour final.

Next up on the Center Court was stunning South African Amanda Coetzer who was to face surprising semi finalist Zsofia Gubacsi of Hungary. Making her 1st event debut, Gsubacsi has surprised many this week, except herself en route to the semis and coming in she felt quite confident. 'No one expect ne to be here, Amanda is a good player and she is favourite. Maybe if I play well, I can do good' said the Hungarian who is still learning basic english.
The early stages of the match was all Gubacsi as she broke Coetzer twice to lead 4-0, however, it was the closes she would get as Coetzer won the next 11 games to open a 6-4 5-0 lead before Gubacsi broke. However, Coetzer was not going to give up her chance at a final and broke Gubacsi to 0 to advance to the final where Grzybowska is her opponent.

Womens Doubles Champions were Elena Dementieva and Jelena Dokic.

The attention then turned to the sunny and beautiful Dusit Resort in Pattaya as the players did battle in the Volvo Womens Open.
Up at stake was $ 45,000 US$ and a new Volvo to the champion and world no 1 Saori Obata was the drawcard in action.

Joining her in the final 4 was the third seed Maria Vento, the Czech Republic's Daja Bedanova and Greece's surprise, Eleni Danilidou.

Danilidou, was a huge surprise, unable to get past qualifying of her last event, her semi final run had got her excited. Her opponent in the semis would be young Czech, Daja Bedanova. First up on court however was Obata who faced the tenacious Vento.

Obata, was the losing finalist at last weeks FWTA Championships in Munich however it was a signal that her form is on the up. With the top spot at stake, she set out to destroy Vento.
If she was out there to destroy Vento, then Vento forgot to follow the script, capitalising on frail shots by Obata and weak defense.
However, Obata isn't the world no 1 for nothing and as the 2nd set began, she poured on the pressure, leaving Vento in all sorts of trouble.
The next two sets were closely contested but Obata had the experience and guile to advance.

Young Czech player Daja Bedanova is only in her 2nd week on tour. After a first round exit last week, not much was expected of the inexperienced Czech.
In an age of thumping power hitters, Bedanova is a different sort of player. Sure she smacks the ball hard but she also uses touch and her deceptive speed to her advantage.
She used her strokes and speed to run circles around inexperienced Greek, Eleni Danilidou today. Bedanova was never in trouble as she relied on a mentally fragile Danilidou to take the match in straight sets.

Gubacsi Impresses All as she reaches Semifinals

Zsofia Gubacsi of Hungray made her debut at the L'internationeux de Peugeout reaching the semifinals upseting, a top 10 player, a top 30 player, and a new player on the tour. "I'm really pleased with my results here, I think I showed everyone that I'm a real threat and that I'm not a pushover. It's really nice to get so far here considering that clay is my best surface. I wish though I could have pushed Amanda a bit more, I think she was just too consistent for me and well I think I was just going for too much on my forehand side. And Amanda just kept on bringing the ball back to my side and she pressured me to hit winners."

Gubacsi, who should be ranked in the top 30 when the rankings come out has committed herself to playing the rest of the events on the schedule until the start of the Aussie season. "I just want to boost my ranking and get some confidence on the tour. I've made a big dent but I need to build on it and not just rest on my laurels!"

"Yes me and Anne have split. As usual she has taken everything out of proportion. All i said was that she needed to work on her net play as she is very poor there and she started screaming at me. Well im not teh kinda person to sit back and let some1 do that so i gave as good as she got. Anne has really got a mouth on her and needs to laern how to control it. Patty is a great girls and i hope that she can help her.
I was dissapointed with my singles display i've been playing poorly recently and i need to get my mind on track for 3rd set tie-breaks.
I have no problems playing with Anne in Fed Cup, she seems to be making a huge deal out of it. I just wanna represent my country and play well. It is a shame that our partnership had to end with her being such a bitch, but hopefully we can remain friends.

Also i am on teh look out for a new doubles partner. My commitmnets can be found in teh thread in 'GAMES'. Gimme an e-mial at [email protected] or here if u wanna pair up
