An injured Goolagong goes down to Gourlay, who attacks the net at every chance. After her first round match an x-ray revealed Evonne had a torn ligament and a badly bruised heel. Hunt complained that Wade was quick serving her.

Kerry Melville is giving up doubles this year to concentrate on singles.

Olga wins wearing a red wristband that was given to her for good luck. During the tense and exciting semi vs. Casals a trainer convinced Olga to switch from a blue to a red wristband. The day of the final he wanted it back, but the Russian replied, "No, no , I never give this up. I trade you for a bottle of vodka." It's the biggest title to date for a Russian female.

King after the final:"I better get my act together. I never ran for one ball. I was totally out of shape after 3 weeks off."

"She's hitting harder than she used to, and getting better on clay, if that's possible", declared Kerry Melville. Of course Kerry was referring to Chris Evert. Officials were so certain of Evert's victory that at 5-1 in the second set they started up a Gremlin car behind the stands. Chris promptly lost the next two games, and the car motor was turned off until she closed out the match.

The richest regular tour event in women's tennis was won by Chris Evert in devastating fashion-dropping only 13 games in 4 matches. Evert's clay dominance has become so taken for granted that Virginia Wade claimed she "didn't care" when facing Rosie Casals, as the winner had to face Chris. Casals shot back, "How can you not have any incentive when you are playing for 30,000?" Rosie then went out and got the worst drubbing she could remember at Chris' hands. This year Evert is hitting harder and moving forward with more confidence. She also credits a diet with speeding her up. "I'm moving much better since I lost 13 ounds. I was really Miss Tubby in Europe last summer when I weighed 128 pounds."

Of the world's top ten showed-only Billie Jean was absent, and Evert had a go at her for it. "I play on hard surfaces in her territory (California) and it would be a better tournament here if she played. All the other girls played."

Other highlights: Goolagong comes back from a 6-7 0-5 (and 1 match point) hole to beat Helen Gourlay. Gourlay had beaten Evonne the week before in Philly. Evonne on her biggest ever comeback: "It sort of ran through my mind, 'Good, another couple days holiday." Gourlay: "I was determined to win. A lot of people thought I won last week because she was injured."

Note: No dates of this tournament given. But the ending date is quite sure because of the following back story given in the related article of the German tennis magazine: "The match of Ruzici against Alena Palmeova-West became also a match against the time. The Romanian team was already at the beginning of the final at the airport in Stuttgart, ready to leave to Naples playing Federation Cup there. At 5-5 in the third set the tournament director wanted to cancel the match - as it was negotiated with the Romanian team captain - to get Virginia on time to the airport. Ignoring the high risk of missing the plane Ruzici decided to continue play and won the final set 7-5. With a lot of luck the TC Weissenhof made it possible, the Romanian girl caught her flight last minute.

Source for scores and match reports: World of Tennis.

Australia prevailed in a tough final. Goolagong won handily enough at 6-1 7-5 before Heldman's defensive play could lull her into a third set. Di Fromholtz hit her way to 6-2 5-3, but couldn't close the deal, as gum chewing Jeanne Evert dug herself in and started to lob. "Miss Fromholtz had played all of the spectacular shots. Miss Evert had played tough, practical, dull, tennis, but against all the odds, she had hung on to keep the Americans in the match."

The Yanks made a match of the final doubles, holding 3 set points in both the first and second set. "When it didn't matter , the Americans won splendid points, but the Aussies were better in the crises. Miss Walsh was liable to to fall a victim to flutterings og temperament and sometimes Miss Heldman yielded to the temptation to be too clever and, in any case, as the evening grew darker and bats flew low over the court, Miss Goolagong could always lihghten the darkness with touches of magic like the angled backhand volley which saved the first set point in the first set. Miss Heldman served fro both sets and the crowd enjoyed her melodramatic gestures of frustration. Someone also stole one of her racquets during the presentation ceremony. All of that seemed a part of the spirit of Naples."

Russia and Czechoslovakia did not field teams due to the participation of South Africa. Sudan was entered, but withdrew due the South American situation. One suspects that the default of Yugoslavia may also have been connected to the political controversy.

Fiesty Patti Hogan quits her 3R match in a huff over disputed line calls. She told umpire sydney Shaines, "I can't play two of you and there are no rules preventing me from retiring." Two years ago the controversial behavior of Hogan resulted in her being barred from the doubles at Guilford.

Wade's 4th title at cold, wet, and windy Bournemouth.

In the final Wade yells "Sorry!" to Julie when a netcord drops over. Turning her head, Ginny is heard to add "Like Hell!". After quickly losing the first set Julie settled in and resorted to her full repertoire od dinks, drop shots, ans slices. She even threw in an unexpected underhanded serve for good measure.

Christine Truman Janes was once feared on these clay courts, but the 33 year old mother of two is no longer a major threat. Patti Hogan disputed several line calls and threw her racquet to the ground several times in a 3R defeat...

Draw note: Nathalie Fuchs is listed as losing in the 1R both here and in Hamburg. This is close to impossible unless she is playing on different days and hopping quick flights. Could there be two different ladies named Fuchs?

Chris got by 4-6 6-1 6-4

The dramatic highlight of the week cam in the quarters when Navratilova upset #3 seed Masthoff. It took all of 2 hours 45 minutes, with Martina winning a 14-12 tiebreaker on her 8th match point, having survived 2 match points herself.

In the final Evert's brew of consistency and deadly lobs proved too much for Navratilova, who was contesting her first major final. The crowd of 6,000 applauded both women for conceding points on doubtful line calls.

The tournament director was upset with Masthoff for defaulting in the doubles final, contending she had not reported her injurty to the proper authorities.

The New York Times calls Heldman "an American living in London."

Draw Notes:

Olga Morozova and Helga Mastoff were co #3 seeds. This was also done in the men's draw, where Borg and Ashe were co #3 seeds.

#5 Pat Pretorius withdrew, as she is retiring from tennis. She is in Morozova's section, and is replaced by a lucky loser.

Pinto-Bravo=the maiden name of Ana Maria Arias. Arias was an Argentine who married fellow tennis player Jaime Pinto Bravo circa 1973 or 1974. She played Fed Cup for Chile in 1974. World Tennis lists her as Argentine.

Summary:

Defending champion Margaret Court is expecting her first child and thus absent.

This was the first year that World Team Tennis had an effect on this slam, as its participants were barred from playing here. This meant no Billie Jean King, who hates red clay anyway; and no Francoise Durr, Nancy Richey, Kerry Reid, or Rosie Casals. Evonne Goolagong is willing to compete here-with a clause in her WTT contract allowing her to come to Paris. Jimmy Connors had similar terms. As Connors and Goolagong had won the Australian in January both were in the hunt for the Grand Slam. Only Evonne can challenge Chris Evert on clay, being the last person to defeat Evert in 1973 at Rome.

French Federation President Philippe Chatrier sees things differently. Determined to nip World Team Tennis in the bud, he bars anyone who is in the league, including Evonne Goolagong and Jimmy Connors. In his words "WTT is an obnoxious disruptive organization. It wants to kill European tennis. " (World Tennis, p 84) The two sue the French Open, but it will not be settled until long after the dust settles on Court Centrale. Chatrier has cut off his nose to spite his face-and the French suffers for years. Evonne and Jimmy refuse to enter Roland Garros for many years-even after World Team Tennis folded in 1978.

That leaves Chris Evert as the prohibitive favorite to win her first major.

#2 seed Virginia Wade fell early to a combination of her nerves and the slow red clay she dreads like the plague.

Evert flies through the draw until she encounters Julie Heldman in the quarters. Jules got smoked 6-0 to start. She led Chris 5-4 and served for the second set. At that point all her ploys deserted her and Chrissie swept to a 6-0 7-5 victory. Chris will face Helga Masthoff, who can pass for a German model. A stork-like wingspan helped Helga overcome young talent Martina Navratilova. "I decided to go to net all the time. She [Martina] did it too me at Rome, so decided to get there first."

Helga Masthoff employs all of her clay court wiles on the young American. The tall German employs attack and defense by turns, hitting drop shots, then often hitting forcing winners with overheads or sneaking in for volleys after finding an opening. The effort wears her out though. She gained a 4-1 lead in set 1, with rallies often going to 50 shots or more. Somehow the set got away from her. Masthoff surged to 4-2 in the second set, but yet again Evert tied and then passed her. Chris holds on for a 7-5 6-4 victory, her only true test of the tournament. "Helga played terrifically. She hits those dink shots" Chris said.

Olga Morozova of the Soviet Union was her final opponent, the first major final for a Russian woman. In a low key semifinal (not even one French journalist was present) Olga swept aside Raquel Giscafre 6-3 6-2.

Olga tried to rally with Chris. 4-0 Evert. Olga changed tactics, coming in on first and second serves. A desperate volley off the wood netted Olga her first game. It would be six games until Olga won another. It ended as a 6-1 6-2 slaughter as Chrissie refused to miss no matter what the Russian tried. Reflecting on her victory Evert declared to the crowd of 10,000, "I needed to win this one. It's the biggest clay court tournament in the world. And it's a tough one to win. The clay is very slow. You need endurance, more than on any other surface."

As a footnote this was the first ever Grand Slam title for Martina Navratilova-winning the mixed with Ivan Molina. She becomes the youngest winner of a French title to date.

Below are two detailed reports from 'The Times' of London on the 1974 French Open, where Chris Evert won her first major singles title at the age of 19]

From The Times, June 13, 1974:

Miss Evert to play Mrs Morozova in Paris Final

By Rex Bellamy

Christine Evert, aged 19, champion of South Africa and Italy, will play Olga Morozova, aged 25, runner-up for the Italian title two years ago, in the women's singles final of the French tennis championships. Mrs Morozova thus follows a precedent set by Alexander Metreveli at Wimbledon last year. She is the first woman from the Soviet Union to reach the singles final of one of the tournaments traditionally regarded as ‘the big four?. She took Miss Evert to three sets in the semi-final round of the recent Italian Championships.

Today Mrs Morozova beat Raquel Giscafré, of Buenos Aires, 6-3, 6-2, in 47 minutes, and Miss Evert won 7-5 6-4 in an hour and 32 minutes against the 1970 runner-up Helga Masthoff, who is 13 years her senior. Mrs Masthoff has played Miss Evert five times without winning a set. This afternoon Mrs Masthoff and Miss Giscafré both played to the limit of their ability in matches that lacked either the drama or uncertainty or the spice of inspired technical virtuosity. In short, they were matches to interest the connoisseur rather than excite the casual spectator.

Miss Evert is already the uncrowned queen of the clay court game. There is something of Jane Austen (without the wit and charm) in the way she aspires to perfection within a carefully limited range. She gasped with horror when she made an unforced error. She was lured into the forecourt only fourteen times, winning merely six of those rallies. Her four volleys yielded but one point.

Those adverse percentages are foreign to her nature. Her natural home is the baseline, from which she drives to a good length on both flanks, with occasional short angles, drops and lobs to vary the pattern and keep her opponents awake. She scrambles well, too. It is all done with a poker-faced concentration that seldom wavers. Her tennis is a kind of hypnotic torture.

There were times when the exchange of looped drives and the absence of birds suggested that the usual low-flying sparrows had chosen a different flight path in order to keep out of harm?s way. Mrs Masthoff eventually became visibly bored and tired. She shouldered arms between shots ? shots, not points ? with a kind of elongated ennui. She crossed her long legs in the stance she always takes up when weary. Tactically, she showed nearly all the initiative and for the most part her game was imaginatively conceived and soundly played. She went to the net whenever discretion permitted it. She tried every avenue, but found them all marked 'Sans interdit' [No entry].

In the first set she led 4-1. In the second she won nine successive points and had four break points for a 4-2 lead (hereabouts, Miss Evert made a few absentminded errors that suggested her concentration needed a breather). But on each occasion Miss Evert firmly pounded the German into a corner from which there was no escape.

From The Times, June 17, 1974:

[Chris Evert wins first major singles title]

By Rex Bellamy

Christine Evert, aged 19, already a champion of South Africa and Italy, won £3,500 and became the youngest women?s singles champion [at Roland Garros] since Christine Truman, as she was then, in 1959. Miss Evert beat Olga Morozova 6-1, 6-2 in 62 minutes. She is the first woman since Ann Jones in 1966 to win the Italian and French Championships in the same year. [...]

Like Evonne Goolagong, who was also 19 when she won the championship three years ago at her fist attempt, Miss Evert did not lose a set. Today she looked a charming figure in a dress of buttercup yellow with matching sweatband and pants. Her game, too, combined boldness with a tidy discretion. She wanted to play the match from the back of the court. But Mrs Morozova sensibly insisted that either one player or the other must spend a lot of time in the forecourt.

When Miss Evert had to go there, she nimbly answered drop with drop (or a deep return down the lines), or carefully and soundly played the volleys and smashes Mrs Morozova challenged her to hit. When the Russian went to the net she was usually bamboozled by lobs; or fierce passing shots that demanded courageously positive thinking from Miss Evert. Mrs Morozova tried everything she could think of in an attempt to hustle Miss Evert about, break up the rhythm of her game, and either induce an error or create the opening for a winner. It was cutely conceived, but it was not executed quite well enough to have the desired effect.

Miss Evert took it all in her stride and played almost flawless tennis until she led 6-1, 4-0, at which point she briefly showed signs of human frailty. That did not last long. Soon Mrs Morozova, her hair tied up in spaniel-like bunches over her ears, was again looking the epitome of dejected frustration. When she was serving at 2-5 and 30-40, match point, the tension was broken by the raucous rasp of a car horn. As if it were a signal, Miss Evert clouted a crosscourt forehand that flew from the frame of Mrs Morozova's lunging racket. The first Russian woman to reach a 'big four' singles final had been beaten.
