Notes:
Could Brenda Dale be Brenda Dart?
Melville better known later as Kerry Reid
Dalton better known as Judy Tegart.
------------------------------------------------------
The best field since 1969. It was Evert's first trip to Oz. She was to enter 6 times in all, never failing to reach the finals. After 1974 she didn't return until 1981.

A "spillover' crowd of 13,000 showers their adoration on Goolagong for winning what was billed as a heavyweight contest.

The first two sets had featured some spectacular baseline rallies. During the 10 minute rest before the 3rd set Evonne's coach urged her to attack the net, rounding off with, "Evonne just believe in God, believe in yourself, and believe in me." She proceded to steamroll Evert, who won only 9 points in the last set. When it was over the fans gave Goolagong a 5 minute standing ovation and threw leftover New Year's party streamers onto the court. The Evert-Goolagong rivalry now stands at 6-5 in Evert's favor.

Goolagong was suffering from blistered feet after the aussie. Luckily for her she gets a bye and another day's rest from the tournament. On her retrurn to the courts she wins two matchesin one day. For the second time in two weeks Yank Peggy Michel has Evonne on the ropes in the first set. History repeats itself here at Sydney as Goolagong escapes 2 set points-it was 3 at the Aussie. Peggy returned to the tour in August of 1973 after a bout with hepatitus. Viv Edwards, Evoone's mentor, has taken peggy under his wings and will coaching her as well. Vic puts the two girls as doubles partners for most of 1975.

Krantzcke's upset win the finest effort of 1974 for the strong 6' 1" lass.

*The Slims tour guide for 1975 explicitly states this event was indoors on Sporteze-yet the New york Times indicates that 14 matches were rained out on January 14th. Could the event have moved indoors only for the later part of the event?

Billie Jean and the women's tour are riding a wave after her much publicized match with Bobby Riggs. A sellout corwd of 6,500 fills the Civic Auditorium. In fact over 2,000 people are turned away at the fate on finals day. In King's words, "It is all too beautiful. I've waited 20 years to see crowds like this." The King-Evert head to head now stands at 4 wins each.

King had a rough go of at times in her 1R match-swatting a ball into the stands at one point before eventually winning over 15 year old Robin Tenney. She had another close call in the quarters. She had called her opponent Kemmer "not that good a player". (This quote from the NYT needs context-was it before or after the match-and what were the exact circumstances surrounding the quote?). In the Kemmer match BJK came back from 2-5 down.

What promises to be a great final falls flat as King commits too many errors to make it a competitive contest. After collecting her winner's check of $6,000 and a sports car Evert says, "I don't think Billie Jean had a good day. She has so many things on her mind concerning women's tennis."

One thing on the mind of all players is what the ITF plans to do about World Team Tennis. The players are hoping for a deal that allows them to keep all options open. The ITF feels threatened by the new concept however, and is seriously considering a boycott.

Draw notes:
*Tomanova replaced #3 seed Nancy Richey Gunter, who withdrew due to injury.
**Casals/Gunter, seeded #2, also withdrew-leaving the bottom section of draw open.

A weakened field as Evert rests. Cynics point out how convenient is is that she skips an indoor week-not her forte. Other absentees include Nancy Richey Gunter, injured last week, and Evonne Goolagong, whose manager Vic Edwards wants her to avoid being overtennised in general and avoid indoor event sin particular in a bid to win the Grand Slam.

2,600 see the QF between Peaches and Gourlay. The 24 year old Mrs Donald Krott 9nee Bartkowicz) is coming back from having a child. As tough as that is her opponent had her own issues to overcome. In 1971 Gourlay made the final of the French, but Helen has been out of action for the last 10 months as she went through an operation for a pinched nerve in her elbow. Gourlay, described by the NYT as " a quite blonde with a loud net game", first started having problems in 1972 during Enlgand's grass court season. When hitting the ball her fingers and then her hand would become numb. Peaches says World Team Tennis has been an incentive for her to return to the game.

Old friends and former doubles partners King and Casals provide a show in the semis. After losing the opening set two linesmen are removed at Billie Jean's comman. ing thought she on the receiving end of some bad calls, and the crowd apparently agreed with her, clapping heavily as the linesmen were removed. Rosie talked her friend into staying on court instead of walking off in
protest, telling Billie Jean that she herself was getting bad calls on her side of the court. Rosie's colorful ensemble had 3 butterflies on her dress and two sewed into the bottomas of her panties-one for each cheek. After the match King remarked on the incident, saying, "I've got a low boiling point. What this game needs ar eprofessional linesmen. Iknow I've been saying this for years, but it's true. We're years behind the times." Towars the end the acrobatic Casals had no answers for the steadier King, who captured the last 8 games of the match.

By contrast the second semi between Melville-Gourlay was "a tea party" compared to the flashy first match. The pair played with the smae lines crew as King-Casals without a peep of protest from either girl. Melville offered up her differing opinion on the brouhaha. "We [herself and Helen] were brought up differently I guess. Most of this arguing with linesmen is done for tactical reasons.
It helps intimidate them. You can get away with it over here, but not in Australia.". Kerry had this to say about moving from the middle of the top ten to challenge the elites such as King. "I'm closing the gap betwen them and me. When I play Billie Jean tomorrow I'll have to keep attacking. If I don't she'll come up to the net herself."

Indeed King did attack in the final-and to devastating effect. "I played one of the best matxhes of my life", she said afterwards. King had one of the better weeks of her life. All five matches here at Washington featured love sets-and amazing feat in this competitive era.

The doubles final was not a tidy for Madame Superstar. After missing 3 match points and dropping the second set she hit balls into the rafters and muttered about how she was being persecuted by officials. Billie jean had a lot of crowd support all week until her final fit of pique. Boos raine down on her final act as she and BettyStove finally won the doubles on their 7th match point.

Draw notes:

* The draw is taken directly from the Slims Media Guide. However-the placement of the #4 seeds in the doubles draw is off unless there was a last minute replacement.

The crowd is "wildly partisan" in favor of their hometown girl Evert. A chilly wind did nothing to put Chrissie off in the semis. She routed Casals-making a grand total of 3 errors in the first set and 1 in the second. All rosie could do was mutter about the wind. Melville liked her chances after her semi, declaring, "If I play like I did today, I have a good chance against Chris. The reason people have trouble beating Chris is they change their game, but she doesn't change hers."

Melville never got to hit a ball in the final. In a motel mishap she stubbed her toe so badly that she broke it. Althea Gibson, the 1958 US Champ, fills in at the last minute. In an exhibition match Chris beats her 6-1 6-2.

Could this be the first satellite event to mirror the Slims? Perhaps designed to give the lesser women a small share of the spotlight, it also vastly reduced the qualie rounds for regular tour events. Presumably those who did well in the satellite events would "jump up" to the main tour.

A tournament of upsets-notably in the semis where Wade tops Billie Jean King and Rosie Casals shocks Chris Evert, spoiling promoters King vs Evert dream final.

Rosie Casals first victory over Evert in seven tries. This will be the only time Casals ever defeats Evert. She beat Navratilova earlier in the event, making her only 1 of 5 women to ever beat Evert and Navratilova in the same event. (Evonne Goolagong, Tracy Austin, Hana Mandlikova and finally Steffi Graf were the other four).

Casals attributed the shock result to her serve. The match was televised, with commentary by Billie Jean King, who had to play HER semi vs Wade afterwards. "I clearly wouldn't want to do it", remarked Wade later. Virginia beat King reversed a 9 match losing streak vs King dating back to Bournemouth in 1970. King, perhaps regretting trying to commentate and play in the same night, refused to speak to the press afterwards.

Casals was ahead a set and 3-2 when the air went out of her balloon. Wade went on a rampage, winning 8 consecutive points to win the 2nd set 6-4 and going to 5-0 in the 3rd. Rosie won a token game before Virginia closed it out.

Drama for the defending champ Wade in the quarters. Serving at 5-6, Wade got called on a foot fault by the referee and exploded in anger. She held it together long enough to win in straights, serving a winner at 4-4 in the sudden death tiebreaker.

That quarter had drama enough, but Evert vs Hunt was the match of the tournament. It started out tamely, as Chris Evert didn't lose a single point on serve in winning set 1 6-0. Lesley Hunt clawed back down 0-2 to get to a tiebreak-where she saved a match point at 4 points all -sudden death point in the tiebreak. The crowd cheers Hunt over Evert to the point where Chris is on the verge of tears. Chrissie outlasts the drunk hecklers and her serve and volley foe to move on 6-3 in the third. Afterwards Chris said. "I felt I was playing Lesley and the crowd and I'm not used to it. It did rattle me...it was an experience."

The night before her semi vs Nancy Gunter was trying for Virginia Wade, who stubbed her toe getting out of bed in the dark to answer the phone. "I've never seen so much blood", Virginia told reporters the next day, adding she'd laughed it off. Sore to or no the Brit got the better of Nancy in 3 sets. "I though Nancy ran out of steam" was Wade's assessment of the last set.

Wade's serve and volley game was off on finals day. She dropped serve 3 times in the close first set, being undone by numerous double faults. After Evert started to hold serve it was quickly all over despite Virginia's grit and determination. Chris won a mink coat in addition to the $10,000 first prize. This nationally televised match reversed last's year's Dallas final.

The hostility of the crowd in the Hunt match was not quickly forgotten by Evert. The did not return to Dallas until five years later in 1979.

Draw note: Dolan uses Isa Fernandez rather than "Isabel"

Althea Gibson has been training recently and would like to play, but the WTA tour says she must play qualifying, something Al refuses to do. The low ceiling at the Felt Forum makes lobbing hard-so organizers decideded to not having a doubles event. Billie Jean went on stage to tape an episode of "The Bob Newhart Show" before her first round match. Ms. King strikes a small blow for equality when she gets several ballgirls reinstated after they've been let go for not being able to throw the ball across the court. "There were at least two girls who could throw the balls-I saw them do it-and there were plenty of boys who couldn't." A capacity crowd of 4,500 on hand for the finals. Scalpers were selling tickets on finals day for double the price.

Evert mows down Evonne in less than 1 hour. The Aussie is just returning from a two-month layoff. Evert " a deadly stroking machine on Florida courts", won 8 straight games from 4-4. At least Evonne hit the 1 hour mark-the New York Times reports that Chris sent Olga packing in only 20 minutes. Overall Evert drops only 12 games in 5 matches
