Summary

A landmark year, 1973 will best be remembered for the "Battle of the Sexes" match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. 1973 was also notable for having a "big four" in Margaret Court, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert and Evonne Goolagong. The public came out in droves to see the contrasts in styles and personalities.

The dominance of world #1 Margaret Court was overshadowed by all hoopla surrounding King and Riggs. Margaret won 3 of the 4 slams. The Aussie had a head to head advantage over King, Evert, and Goolagong. Victory over Evonne Goolagong at the Aussie bode well for Court, who decided to tour with husband Barry and her young son Danny. For the first time Court played the Virginia Slims tour consistently the whole year. She accepted a challenge from Bobby Riggs to play an exhibition on Mother's Day. Riggs destroyed her before a national TV audience. Danny ruined Margaret's shoes right before the match by trying to flush them down the toilet, an omen of what was to come. Dubbed the "Mother's Day Massacre", Riggs used this to trumpet male superiority and denigrate women, probably trying to drive up the price of another match.

Margaret Court rued her match with Riggs the rest of the year and career, but went on to have a banner year. At the French Open she beat back the clay court prowess of Chris Evert in a thrilling 6-7 7-6 6-4 final. Court was within 2 points of defeat several times in the 2nd set. Her grit and a Evert tightening up let Court turn the tide in what was the match of the year.

A week after the French Chrissie lost to Evonne Goolagong on the red clay at Rome. No one knew it at the time, but this would be Evert's last defeat on clay for 5 years. She would not lose again on clay until Tray Austin defeated her in 1979 in Rome.

Chris Evert showed her class by upsetting Court in the semis at Wimbledon. A deadly lob was the key to her 3 set win. "Old Lady" Billie Jean King bested Evonne Goolagong in the other semi. Evert came up short in her 2nd slam final as King sliced, diced, and attacked. The first set was a 6-0 blowout. Chrissie showed her class in the 2nd set, pushing Billie Jean to 7-5.

King's Wimbledon victory fed excitement for a "Battle of the Sexes" versus Bobby Riggs. The nascent women's movement went together perfectly with the Virginia Slims women's only tour, called "Women's Lob" by the press. As the summer went on the upcoming September match became daily news, as Riggs and King both drummed up publicity. The pressure reached it peak at the US Open, the first slam to offer equal prize money for women. On a hot day Billie Jean wilted vs the cagey Julie Heldman. Julie complained to the umpire as King moved slower with each game. King exploded in anger, telling Heldman "If you want it that much you can have it", and marched off court. Coming only a couple of weeks before the match in Houston, King's retirement drove betting markets into a frenzy.

The other big 3 marched forward. Court got revenge over Evert in the semis to face Goolagong in the final. A close 3 setter went Court's way. The lady who declared herself "No women's libber" won $25,000, a top prize equal to that for the men. This was Court's last grand slam in singles. At 24 majors she holds the record among women.

After the US Open it was all about Kings vs Riggs at Houston. Billie Jean struck a blow for women by beating the much older Riggs in straight sets. Attended by over 30,000 fans, this intersex math confirmed the women's tour had come of age as an attraction for spectators. For the next few years Billie Jean King went from being a star to a megastar, raising the profile of women' s tennis for good.

For most of the year the ladies had two separate tours competing against each other. The USTA tour had Chris Evert and Evonne Goolagong. The Virginia Slims tour featured Court and King. Thankfully the schism ended by the end of the year.

Rounding out the year, Chris Evert won the Virginia Slims tour finale. She was clearly the future of women's tennis. Her main foes in 1974 would be Billie Jean and Evonne Goolagong. Margaret Court was hanging up her racquets, expecting a 2nd child.

Wade vs Fayter is the match of the tournament. Virginia seemed set for a routine win at 6-3 5-3. At match point she sends a backhand into the net. Leading 4-2 in the tiebreak Wade drop 5 points and the second set. Fayter had beaten Wade earlier in the year at Charlotte, and perhaps this preyed on Virginia's mind. Wade exploded over a line call at 5-4 and 15-0 when serving for the match. Jackie was two points from victory on Wade's serve at 5-6 30-all, but got no closer.

Julie abandons her usual clever tactics and tries to hit with power vs Wade in the final. Virginia demolished her 6-3 6-1.

Draw note:

Sharon Walsh replaces Maria Bueno of Brazil when Maria can't get a visa to leave Brazil.

This is the 1973 edition of the Moscow international summer tournament, which couldn't held at its usual August date, and therefor postponed and outsourced to Tbliisi exceptionally, accepting a distinctly drop in number of international visitors.

Visitors are slightly represented, all "non-Western"

An Oct. 30 ending is not proved, finals reported already Oct. 29, start probably Oct. 20 (or earlier?)

Once again Wade and Heldman display their emotions on their sleeves to the delight of an audience. Jules tries everything to break up Virginia's rhythm, throwing changes of pace and junk. At 1 all in the third the two women exchanged words. A fired up Wade lost only 5 points in the last five games. Virginia closed it out with 10 consecutive points.

Sue Mappin survived 5 match points in two separate matches-3 against Hume at 4-5 in the 3rd, and 2 more vs Kiyomura at 4-5 in the 2nd set.

Wade wins all 4 events on this years Dewar circuit. She had to claw back from 3-5 in the third here. at 30 all Julie was only two points away from the title.Virginia uses the fast carpet to advantage in knocking off several winning volleys.

Virginia has entered every event but one on the "Whiskey circuit" since its inception in 1968. This is her 14th Dewar title and her 17th consecutive singles victory.

The future of the circuit is in some doubt, this year Torquay was controversially dropped.

Draw notes:

#3 seed Marita Redondo withdraws because of tonsilitus. Ann Kiyomura fills in by virtue of winning a playoff over Sharon Walsh at Nottingham.

Chris Evert has come here chasing the top prize in the Commercial Union Grand Prix. While the women do not have a big finale event as the men do, the #1 spot is worth 9,000 British pounds.

Chris Evert had to earn her title in the early stages. Lefty Kloss took a set from her in the quarters by attacking boldly in a night match under the lights. at 4 all in the 3rd set Chris won 8 of the last 9 points. This win clinched the Commercial Union prize.

From the ‘Rand Daily Mail’, November 23, 1973

[Women’s singles quarter-finals]

By Rory Brown

Eighteen-year-old Chris Evert earned herself a cool R18,000 at Ellis Park last night – and was made to earn every single cent. Before going on to beat another teenager, Ilana Kloss, an 18-year-old Johannesburg schoolgirl, in the quarter-finals of the South African Championships, Miss Evert was, at one stage, within two points of becoming a casualty in one of the year’s greatest upsets. She eventually eked out a 2-6 6-3 6-4 win [...]

But the courageous Miss Kloss was, oh, so close to a magnificent upset. Miss Kloss rocked her illustrious opponent to the soles of her shoes when she whipped through the first set, 6-2, with service breaks in the second and fourth games. At this stage it was a hesitant Miss Evert clinging to survival against an opponent who immediately settled into an immaculate length and who was not afraid to attack.

In the second set games went against service until Miss Evert held her delivery in the eighth game for the break that mattered. She polished off the set at 6-3 and then immediately found herself in trouble by going 2-0 down in the final set. She pulled level when Miss Kloss dropped her service in the fourth game and then, with her confidence increasing all the time, Miss Evert applied the coup de grâce when she broke the plucky Miss Kloss in the tenth game.

-----

In the semis Wade led 4-0 in the opening set of the semis before Evert swept 12 of the last 14 games, while Evonne Goolagong easily bested blonde Kristien Kemmer.

The Gonger is hampered by blistered feet in the final. The Aussie also makes repeated errors on her backhand. In all the match took only 1 hour and 4 minutes. Evert has now improved her improved her head to head vs. Evonne to 6-3. By winning here Evert finished first in the 1973 Grand Prix, with Goolagong second. The bonus is worth $22,000. It's less clear how much Chrissie's new diamond ring is worth. She has announced her engagement to fellow tennis pro Jimmy Connors.

Evert won $6,000 for the title. The male champ earned $7,000.

Attendance: 93,000

For the first time native black South Africans were allowed to compete. Thus despite being quickly dispatched both Jane Maso and Dolly Khanye made history.

Draw Notes:

Evert and Goolagong were co-seeded #1.

Dolan uses Karen Boshoff instead of "Karin".
Is Brummer Botha's first name Marie? And if so why is another Marie Botha in the draw in a different section?
Sannie Gouws= Sandra Gouws from the Chichester/Surbiton draws.
Minnie Van Zyl appears to be an alternate form of Mynnie Van Zyl's name. Which is correct?
Lynette Vermaak may have gone by the nickname of 'Lyn".

The #2 doubles seeds are an educated guess.

Rosie's powerful overheads gain her a rare win over the "Old Lady". She nets $7,500. Chris Evert was originally slated to play here, but had a chance at winning the top prize of the Commercial Union Grand Prix if she went to South Africa instead. Chris was committed to Baltimore until organizer Edy McGoldrick persuaded Billie Jean King Billie to take Evert's place.

This was a non tour event.

Dolan gives dates of November 23-27, but note draw is only 8.

Draw Question:

Is Brummer Botha's first name Marie? And if so why is another Marie Botha in the draw in a different section?
----------------------------------------------------

...
Brummer Botha's first name is Marianna. Another Botha could be Daphne Botha (also known as Daphne Pattison). This is just a guess.
Also there were two players with a last name Vermaak. More well known Yvonne and "L.". In the second round they both lost. Probably Yvonne lost to Pretorius (judging by the sequence of scores). But needs to be clarified.

Even if Margaret was out of sorts due to carrying a child Kerry's win was well deserved. This was only Court's 5th defeat all year.

Evonne came from 4-5 down to run off 3 straight games in both sets of her semi with Lesley Hunt. First prize was $1,600 for Evonne.

Court was chasing her 12th Western Australia Championships.

*Double check final score. Dolan has 7-5 6-1. I also had a score (source?) of 7-6 6-1. Dolan should be considered correct for the present.

Australia d. United States 6-3

Day 1:

Chris Evert (US) d. Kerry Melville 1-6 6-2 6-3
Lesley Hunt d. Nancy Richey (US) 7-5 7-5
Kerry Harris/Melville d. Janet Newberry/Pam Teeguarden (US) 6-3 6-2.

Day 2:

Julie Heldman (US) d. Evonne Goolagong 6-3 1-6 6-3
Janet Newberry (US) d. Kerry Harris 4-6 7-6 6-4
Evonne Goolagong/Lesley Hunt d. Chris Evert/Nancy Richey (US) 6-3 6-1.

Day 3:

Evonne Goolagong d. Chris Evert (US) 6-4 6-3
Kerry Melville d. Julie Heldman (US) 2-6 6-1 6-4
Evonne Goolagong/Janet Young d. Janet Newberry/Pam Teeguarden (US) 6-2 6-3.

Julie Heldman causes a stir by beating Evonne on the 2nd day. Goolagong got off to a slow start, roared back to take the middle set and led 3-2 in the third, then lost 4 consecutive games and with it the match.

Evonne whips Evert in 55 minutes to make up for falling to Julie Heldman the day before. Chris and Jimmy Connors have announced their engagement. The intended wedding date: Fall of 1974.

Shortly before this event began, Margaret Court publicly accused Billie Jean King of dodging her ever since the King-Riggs match. According to Court, King demanded $30,000 to appear at this event. When the organizers agreed to the demand, Court said that King then insisted on a percentage of the gate. They did not agree to that.

On Zummi's Martina page there are these results:
1R Navratilova def. Marie Wikstedt (Swe) 6-2 6-2
2R Olga Morozova (USSR) d. Navratilova 3-6 6-4 3-6

but where can these score suit in that draw?
It fits because what AR has as the 2R is actually the 3rd round.

Keep the contributions coming folks-my spelling needs som ecorrecting at times (thanks for that AR:)) and any draw results save a ton of time.

Added all except for the Italian Open. Thanks AR and you too Tommystar:)

More properly, the West German Open.
I prefer the German Open as a title. The World of Tennis issue I have lists it as the German Open. I suspect this was the title the Germans used at the time too. We have to remember that while the rest of the world divided Germany and Korea into "East-West" and "North-South" this was not the case in those countries.

I can see adding the "West" too if the East Germans had an open event, but I don't believe this was the case.

Sorry to ramble on. It's an issue I'm sensitive to having lived in Korea for a few years.

Newspapers from the era called it the West German Open. That's the only reason I brought up the issue.
No problem Austinrunner. I can change it (or perhaps add a note?) if it reads that way in most sources.

I found most of my first round results from the World of Tennis Annual, but it was missing Ingrid Bentzer! pooling out sources really gives us a complete picture.

All added to this point-can anyone proff the Italian? I was typing fast and errors can creep in.

I've had poor Josus57 on my mind all day:sad:

Chris Evert said after losing to Margaret Court in the French Open final: "I must confess I didn't know Margaret could play so well on clay. I was serving for the match at 5-3 in the second set and thought I had it sewn up. But I lost three points and was down 0-40. How do you get out of that?" Before this match, Evert was 3-0 against Court on clay.

Re: Italian.
My name list takes a break from 65-75, but from 1975 I would share these name guesses:
Rosabla Vido
Everlyn Terras Papale (Terras was her maiden name, I'm fairly sure)
Soon-Oh Lee

I also wonder about Julia Borka vs Katalin and M. Graczol vs. Agnes. Katalin and Agnes played in 1975 and since they're both Hungarian it makes me suspicious that they both also happen to have older sisters.

When I finish 1952 I'll see what I have for 1973

The spelling for Pat Walkden Pretorius/ious goes back and forth in WT, I remember her as ius more often.

Probably Jeong-Soon Lee.

It's Raquel (not Racquel) Giscafre, per her personal preference.

It's Marijke Schaar Jansen, not the reverse.

It's Anna-Maria Nasuelli, not just Maria.

Some names

Rosalba Vido (confirmed by Italian top ten listing for 1973)
Evelyn Terras (her maiden name) Papale.

I was excited you found the name of Soon-Oh Lee David-it was killing me!

I am happy to report the Italian draw is now complete for singles and doubles.:)

I wonder if the name of the German Champioships changed officially at some stage? - even though the country had been divided many years previously it was still only listed as the German Champs in the late 60s.

BP World Of Tennis still listing as German only in 1972.

A native German could confirm this, but my gut says neither West not East Germany officially recognized the other. In other words a school map in West Germany would show ALL of Germany and vice versa. The official name of East Germany was probably something like "The People's Republic of Germany".

Thus the "West" and "East" modifiers were outside (non-German) descriptors only.

It is the same in what we call China and Taiwan today.

I have found that the tournament was called the "West German Open" by major wire services (like UPI, AP, Reuters) in the following years: 1968, 1970, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1989.

Thanks for Raquel.

My WOT entry for Schaar states "Nee Jansen". I wonder inverting the maiden-married names is a feature of the Dutch language? See this site.
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationale_Tennis_Kampioenschappen

They are commonly putting the miaden name as a hyphen AFTER the married (note Ten Bosch for exmaple and Walhof).

Nasuelli is trickier. She could have had a ton of first and middle names. The Fed Cup site lists her as Maria-Teresa. The 1973 Italian top 10 lists her Maria only. For now I'll stick with Maria.

I'm quite confident with the Korean names for 1973 as they also played Fed Cup for korea that year in Bad Homburg.
