Mixed Doubles (Draw=4)

FI: Margaret Court (Aus)/John Newcombe (Aus) d. Billie Jean King/Arthur Ashe 6-3 3-6 6-3
Margaret Court wins all 5 of her matches at this special event consisting of 4 men and 4 women. This earns her the top prize of $40,0000. Evert finished 4th ($12,500), with King and Goolagong making ($10,000).

In a thrilling semi Chris Evert saves 2 match points in her win over Billie Jean King. The first was at 3-5 in the 2n set; the other at 4-5 on a King Double fault. An exhausted Billie Jean had nothing left in the tank for the third set.

This was the first made for TV event at Hilton Head. Played over 3 days, the matches were televised on tape delay over several weeks in 1974. This made it unique in format and easy to package for TV. Equal prize money also broke new ground.

Billie Jean King withdrew, leaving the upper half open. Larry King tells the media his wife may have hypoglycemia and throws doubts on whether or not she will be able to play the Riggs match on September 20th. The announcement overshadows events in St Louis.

*Note: The seeding (from the NYT) does not make sense in the QF between Stove-Krantzcke unless seeds were bumped up following King's withdrawal.

September 20 Battle of the Sexes, Houston, Texas, United States (Indoors)
Venue: The Astrodome

Billie Jean King d. Bobby Riggs 6-4 6-3 6-3

Only an exhibition in theory, this match remains to this day the most heavily covered and attended (30, 472 watched-a record for one match) in tennis history. Billie Jean went from star to a mega-star overnight. ABC bid $700,000 to televise the affair, selling commercial time at $85,000 per minute.

The match itself was anticlimatic after the introductions, when "Sugar Daddy" Riggs was brought on court by a bevy of beautiful babes. Billie Jean was carried in on a litter by topless muscled hunks. She gave "the male chauvanist pig" a toy piggy, then gave him the boot in straight sets. The match helped propel the U.S. tennis boom of the 1970s

FI: Evonne Goolagong (Aus) [1] d Helga Masthoff [2] 7-6 6-3

3rd place: Biryoukova d Orth 3-6 6-0 6-0
5th place: Creydt d Kaligis 2-6 7-6 6-4
7th place: Yagawara d Nomura 6-4 6-4

This was the final in an 10 woman round robin event played in both Osaka and Tokyo. Both Evonne and Helga were 4-0 in the RR's. Goolagong won $US 5,000.

I doubt a bit the results for the final ranking matches. It's totally unlogical that Nomura and Yagawara play the match for 7th place as both are 0-4 in their RR. Goto and Fukouoka both won a match in RR and should be the players for 7th place.

*Dolan has dates of October 2-14.

Lucky Loser Jill Schwikert replaces #2 seed Margaret Court in the draw.

The $25,000 first prize is the largest ever in women's tennis.

Two stars fall by the wayside before the first ball in struck. The biggest star in women's tennis is Billie Jean King, who refuses to come to Boca Raton on the grounds that the event is on clay. Since most of the circuit was indoors, why should the tour finale be on a slower surface was her argument. King was also supposedly angry that Chris Evert and Virginia Wade, two non-Slims players, were allowed to play here. Critics pointed out another possible factor-namely that King didn't want to be spanked on Florida clay by Evert.

#2 seed Margaret Court then dropped out when she had to go to the hospital with abdominal pains. Given antibiotics, she made a quick enough recovery by Thursday, meaning she did not drop out of the doubles with Rosie Casals. The pair actually won the event.

Casals gets upset early, clay never being her strongest surface. The most dramatic event of the week was Lesley Hunt vs Janet Newberry. Hunt had 5 match points. On Sudden Death point Hunt tried a drop shot that landed wide.

With Court gone the tournament got the expected final of Chris Evert vs Nancy Richey Gunter. Nancy has never lost to Chris, owning a 5-0 record vs Evert. Could Evert reverse the trend? On a windy Florida afternoon Chris breaks with two perfect drop shots to go up 3-0. After that they traded games-first set to Evert.

The second was tied at 3 apiece. Nancy was up 40-15 yet dropped the game. She was never the same and tired towards the end. Mrs Gunter said afterwards, " I said all week that I didn't know if I was in good enough shape. As it turned out, I wasn't." As consolation Nancy got $14,000, the biggest pay check of her career to now.

With this victory Evert cements her "Queen of Clay" reputation. Never again will she lose to Nancy Richey.

On the youth front Jennifer Balent came through qualies at the age of 13 years and 5 months, making her the youngest person to play a WTA match until Steffi Graf in 1982.

Attendance for the week is 20,000. Most of the later sessions of 4,000 are sold out.

Wade vs Fayter is the match of the tournament. Virginia seemed set for a routine win at 6-3 5-3. At match point she sends a backhand into the net. Leading 4-2 in the tiebreak Wade drop 5 points and the second set. Fayter had beaten Wade earlier in the year at Charlotte, and perhaps this preyed on Virginia's mind. Wade exploded over a line call at 5-4 and 15-0 when serving for the match. Jackie was two points from victory on Wade's serve at 5-6 30-all, but got no closer.

Julie abandons her usual clever tactics and tries to hit with power vs Wade in the final. Virginia demolished her 6-3 6-1.

Draw note:

At 1 all in the third the two women exchanged words. A fired up Wade lost only 5 points in the last five games. Virginia closed it out with 10 consecutive points.

Sue Mappin survived 5 match points in two separate matches-3 against Hume at 4-5 in the 3rd, and 2 more vs Kiyomura at 4-5 in the 2nd set.

DF: Lesely Charles/Glynis Coles .d Virginia Ruzici (Rom)/Mariana Simionescu (Rom) 6-3 7-5

Wade wins all 4 events on this years Dewar circuit. She had to claw back from 3-5 in the third here. at 30 all Julie was only two points away from the title.Virginia uses the fast carpet to advantage in knocking off several winning volleys.

Virginia has entered every event but one on the "Whiskey circuit" since its inception in 1968. This is her 14th Dewar title and her 17th consecutive singles victory.

The future of the circuit is in some doubt, this year Torquay was controversially dropped.

Draw notes:

#3 seed Marita Redondo withdraws because of tonsilitus. Ann Kiyomura fills in by virtue of winning a playoff over Sharon Walsh at Nottingham.

*Verify dates. Dolan has November 12-14.

Chris Evert has come here chasing the top prize in the Commercial Union Grand Prix. While the women do not have a big finale event as the men do, the #1 spot is worth 9,000 British pounds.

Chris Evert had to earn her title in the early stages. Lefty Kloss took a set from her in the quarters by attacking boldly in a night match under the lights. at 4 all in the 3rd set Chris won 8 of the last 9 points. This win clinched the Commercial Union prize.

From the ‘Rand Daily Mail’, November 23, 1973

[Women’s singles quarter-finals]

By Rory Brown

Eighteen-year-old Chris Evert earned herself a cool R18,000 at Ellis Park last night – and was made to earn every single cent. Before going on to beat another teenager, Ilana Kloss, an 18-year-old Johannesburg schoolgirl, in the quarter-finals of the South African Championships, Miss Evert was, at one stage, within two points of becoming a casualty in one of the year’s greatest upsets. She eventually eked out a 2-6 6-3 6-4 win [...]

But the courageous Miss Kloss was, oh, so close to a magnificent upset. Miss Kloss rocked her illustrious opponent to the soles of her shoes when she whipped through the first set, 6-2, with service breaks in the second and fourth games. At this stage it was a hesitant Miss Evert clinging to survival against an opponent who immediately settled into an immaculate length and who was not afraid to attack.

In the second set games went against service until Miss Evert held her delivery in the eighth game for the break that mattered. She polished off the set at 6-3 and then immediately found herself in trouble by going 2-0 down in the final set. She pulled level when Miss Kloss dropped her service in the fourth game and then, with her confidence increasing all the time, Miss Evert applied the coup de grâce when she broke the plucky Miss Kloss in the tenth game.

-----

In the semis Wade led 4-0 in the opening set of the semis before Evert swept 12 of the last 14 games, while Evonne Goolagong easily bested blonde Kristien Kemmer.

The Gonger is hampered by blistered feet in the final. The Aussie also makes repeated errors on her backhand. In all the match took only 1 hour and 4 minutes. Evert has now improved her improved her head to head vs. Evonne to 6-3. By winning here Evert finished first in the 1973 Grand Prix, with Goolagong second. The bonus is worth $22,000. It's less clear how much Chrissie's new diamond ring is worth. She has announced her engagement to fellow tennis pro Jimmy Connors.

Evert won $6,000 for the title. The male champ earned $7,000.

Attendance: 93,000

For the first time native black South Africans were allowed to compete. Thus despite being quickly dispatched both Jane Maso and Dolly Khanye made history.

Draw Notes:

Evert and Goolagong were co-seeded #1.

Dolan uses Karen Boshoff instead of "Karin".
Is Brummer Botha's first name Marie? And if so why is another Marie Botha in the draw in a different section?
Sannie Gouws= Sandra Gouws from the Chichester/Surbiton draws.
Minnie Van Zyl appears to be an alternate form of Mynnie Van Zyl's name. Which is correct?
Lynette Vermaak may have gone by the nickname of 'Lyn".

The #2 doubles seeds are an educated guess.

FI: Rosie Casals/Billie Jean King d. Francoise Durr (Fra)/Betty Stove (Neth) 3-6 6-4 6-2

Rosie's powerful overheads gain her a rare win over the "Old Lady". She nets $7,500. Chris Evert was originally slated to play here, but had a chance at winning the top prize of the Commercial Union Grand Prix if she went to South Africa instead. Chris was committed to Baltimore until organizer Edy McGoldrick persuaded Billie Jean King Billie to take Evert's place.

This was a non tour event.

Dolan gives dates of November 23-27, but note draw is only 8.

Days after being upset Court announces she is pregnant. Margaret withdraws from the upcoming Bonne Belle Cup and the 1974 Aussie Open. She ends the years with 23 out of 26 titles and world #1 ranking. She also sets a prize money record of $205,000.

Even if Margaret was out of sorts due to carrying a child Kerry's win was well deserved. This was only Court's 5th defeat all year.

Evonne came from 4-5 down to run off 3 straight games in both sets of her semi with Lesley Hunt. First prize was $1,600 for Evonne.

Court was chasing her 12th Western Australia Championships.

*Double check final score. Dolan has 7-5 6-1. I also had a score (source?) of 7-6 6-1. Dolan should be considered correct for the present.

Kerry Harris/Melville d. Janet Newberry/Pam Teeguarden (US) 6-3 6-2.

Kerry Melville d. Julie Heldman (US) 2-6 6-1 6-4
Evonne Goolagong/Janet Young d. Janet Newberry/Pam Teeguarden (US) 6-2 6-3.

Julie Heldman causes a stir by beating Evonne on the 2nd day. Goolagong got off to a slow start, roared back to take the middle set and led 3-2 in the third, then lost 4 consecutive games and with it the match.

Evonne whips Evert in 55 minutes to make up for falling to Julie Heldman the day before. Chris and Jimmy Connors have announced their engagement. The intended wedding date: Fall of 1974.

Shortly before this event began, Margaret Court publicly accused Billie Jean King of dodging her ever since the King-Riggs match. According to Court, King demanded $30,000 to appear at this event. When the organizers agreed to the demand, Court said that King then insisted on a percentage of the gate. They did not agree to that.
