A slow resurfaced court compensates for the the high altitude in Denver, which tends to make the ball fly. Rain plagues the event early in the week. In an effort to catch up the 1R match between Richey and Dupont was held indoors.

The 1R sees a huge upset, with Brit Jill Cooper sending #2 seeds Casals packing in straight sets. In the next round Durr narrowly avoids the same fate by saving a match point at 5-6 in the third.

Favorites King and Gunter both get to the final-it's their 6th match this year. Nancy clawed to a win, tying their head to head at 3-3 for 1972 and regaining the lead in the Slims tour money rankings.

Billie Jean shot out to a 6-1 1-0 30-15 lead. After dropping the first game of the match she seized the next 7. Holding on grimly as is her wont, the tough Texan got to 1-1 when the match got interesting. First there was a five minute break to locate new balls. King had a point for 5-4 but got broken, and Nancy served the enxt game out at love to tie matters. Upset with some line calls in the seconf set, Mrs King demanded that a linesman be replaced. He wasn't, and King lost her serve after 3 deuces in the opening game of the third. Noticing the offending linesman was still around really set her off, and she complained throughout the third set. Gunter got broken when leading 3-1, but manged 2 more breaks to run out the match.

The crowd of 2,000 was firmly in King's corner despite her outbursts, prompting her to call them her "all-time audience in ten years...they were really good to me, I'll never forget it."

Top prize in Denver was $6,000.

The BBC does a documentary on the tour filmed in Denver. The show was produced and narrated by Vincent Harra.

Wade barely made it past Fuchs, who led 6-4 5-5 and 0-40 on Wade's serve. Virginia scores a notable win in beating Margaret Court for only the 3rd time in 20 meetings. The key game is at 3-3, turning into an 8 deuce struggle that sees Wade save 4 break points and win on her 5th game point. The New York Times credits her with "Brilliant lobs".

The final is a cakewalk for Evonne, perhaps due in part to Wade's mental fatigue from upsetting Court. The other half of the equation is Evonne's "near perfection", according to the NYT. "The Australian was deadly at the net, where she caught Miss Wade out of position several times." It was all over in 47 minutes.

Top prize was $4,400 for Goolagong. Men's winner Ilie Nastase took home $11,000

The whole event was played under VASS rules-basically a total "no-Ad" scorng system with no deuces. when players split sets in the qualifying the first to 2 games won in place of a third set. The tirbreak games were best of 5 points. This lasted until the QF, when the USTA demanded the traditional scoring be employed or the event forfeit Grand Prix status. The women voted to go on under the VASS and the USTA never followed through with their threat.

Oddly enough almost every match in the singles draw was won in straight sets. Only Pigeon-Gourlay went the "distance." Margaret Court declares herself finally "back" after running roughshod over Evert and King on consecutive days. Chris only managed 3 games, Billie Jean 5. Margaret declared, "I'm serving better than I have in my career and after losing some weight seem to be moving better too."

One entertaining point in the Court-Evert semi saw Margaret Volley back 5 sizzling drives from evert-passing shots that no other woman would have gotten.

Attendance records were broken from the very first day.

Doubles

1R: Graebner/Hogan d Gengler/Gengler 6-3 6-1

FI: Marina Kroshina/Olga Morozova d Carole Graebner/Patti Hogan 6-7 6-2 6-2

Hogan let a match point get away vs Graebner. Carole went on court after her husband got upset. Clark took care of Clark (age 5) and Cameron (4) while mom tookcare of business on court.

The second game of the Morozova-Tuero match goes 18 points, but what looks like a close match is setled in straights. The is the first all-Russian women's final in the US.

The Women's Pro Tour offered to provide money if the draw could be doubled from 8 to 16. The offer was turned down, so Newport took in the extra women.

Draw notes:

Note the odd addition of a Preliminary Round-which included seeds!

*World Tennis has Gunter d Gail Chanfreau in the 1R by 6-0 6-1. Newspapers (including the NYT) list Aschner. We have gone with Aschner as the probable result, though it is known she lost to Penny Moor in the last round of qualifying. Could she have been a lucky loser?

Liem=maiden name of Sugiarto
Kemmer=maiden name of Shaw.

Summary:

The first big upset came early, as Nancy Gunter lost to fellow baseliner Kazuko Sawamatsu, who ran Nancy to death from corner to corner then dropshotted her. Evonne Goolagong's debut at the US Open was a short run. Goolagong led Pam Teeguarden 5-4 40-15 when she was beaten by 2 powerful forehands. The Aussie got only 1 more game as she went down "slow of foot, languid in manner, and lost in some dreamworld of her own."

Casals had Court on the ropes in their quarter. Margaret's husband Barry had to take their crying baby out of the stadium-and it looked as if Court was going to be crying as Casals led 4-2 15-40 on the Aussie's serve in the third. Ah, but the champ in Court then pulled out the stops, even if she did slip twice on the slippery grass, once with her racquet flying out of her hands. Meanwhile Rosie "wilted on the brink of victory", double faulting to end the match.

Morozova threw it all at Evert-mixing up "nothing balls" with forays to the net. "No two returns were alike". Evert turned the tide and seemed to have it won, leasing 5-2 in the 3rd, when the Russian stormed back with flashing forehands to surge to 6-5. Chrissie barely survived by sweeping the tiebreak. "It had been a sparkling, thrilling. memorable contest. It was voted the women's match of tournament.

Wade "fought like to tigress" vs. King, but could only manage to fend off 5 match points before going down.

'The two semis were contrasts in style and personality. King-Court was full of robust, forceful, all-court attack, while the Kerry Melville-Chrissie envcounter was all-femininity, reminiscent of the 1930's in it's baseline exchanges."

King was more consistent in her attack-Court made too many forehand errors to keep up. Kerry's "forceful forehand" had Evert on the move, throwing in the occasional drop shot to take Chris out of her groove. Evert got to almost every one, only to have Kerry rocket a passing shot by her. Melville's win shocked the stadium, who were xpecting a Billie Jean-Chris final.

Chrissie-mania was more subdued than in 1971, but the women (and the Open) were still big attractions in large part because of her. When there were complaints about the women getting "too much exposure" Chris and her sister Jeanne were scheduled for an outside court "there was nearly a riot". All of singles matches were in the stadium.

The final was closer than any of King's other matches, but her serve was too much for Kerry, who almost capitalized on the strong wind that sprang up in the second set. Melville had leads of 4-3 and 5-4 but couldn't break.

The potted grass at Forest Hills is finally prompting open calls to move to a clay surface. Some are even advocating taking the Open from FH because the facility is getting old and too cramped to handle the crowds.

King won a Pinto Station wagon, which was driven into the stadium during the trophy ceremony. After winning the 3 biigest slams one writer declared King "must certainly be included among the handful of tennis immortals." With the rule on non-white discarded BJ won with a "see-through" dress and bright blue sneakers. In her press conference afterwards King threatens a boycott of next year's open if the prize money isn't distributed more equally. She got $10,000 for her victroy compared to Ilie Nastase's $25,000.

Draw note:

Christina Sandberg qualified but did not play-place taken by lucky loser Salli Hudson-Beck. Top prize was $12,000, a huge payday in 1971. In fact, this is the largest top purse to date, with Dallas ($11,000) and the US Open ($10,000) ar second and third. The facilities are so nice that King suggests the US Open could be moved from New York to Charlotte."These are probably the best facilities in the country right now. There is no reason why the US Open shouldn't be held on clay."

15 year old Kathy Kuykendall had vet Casals on the ropes in the 1R but couldn't deliver the knockout blow. Kathy served for the match at 6-5 in the seocnd and had a match point at sudden-death in the tiebreak. Rosie rolled to a comfortable win in the third. Nancy Gunter dodged 2 mps vs Overton.

Billie Jean celebrates turning 24 by beating Casals. Her win over Court demonstrates her current dominance on the tour follwing her US Open win. King's play was sterling from start to finish.

Court must have enjoyed Carolina, as she signs on to become the resident pro at the Seven Devils Mountain Resort in Boone, North Carolina.

Draw note: 2 players withdrew from the main draw at the last minute, spots open for Bonnie Logan and Birgitta Lindstron, both lost in qualifying. (Note that Dolan's book has Hansen as the LL, but she won in qualifying. He also has Lindstrom and Logan as qualifiers.)

Ann Jones plays her first event since giving birth to daughter Philippa Ann in December of 1971. For the most part she enjoys being a mom and touring with her husband Pip, who works for the tour. She partners King "for fun" and wins a thrilling final that ends on sudden death point.

Durr falls in the 1R, "leaving the court in a rage after smashing her racquet" (the New York Times).

King got jeered by the crowd for appearing to give up towards the end of the final. King said later that "i had one of those insignificant days...a walkabout as Evonne Goolagonf would call it." Court took a different view, accusing her of tanking: "You just don't throw it away like that."

King and Court battle it out in high temps of 112 F before a crowd of 4,100. This was the largest crowd for any tennis match in Arizona up to this point. Court led 5-3 in the first set but couldn't finish, and she double faulted in the tiebreak to drop it.. Later Billie jean said, "It's really important vs Margaret not to let her win that first set. If you stay even with her or get ahead you have a chance, because she gets tight."

By reaching the semis Billie Jean once again passed the $100,000 here in Phoenix. The semis and final here are nationally televised by PBS.

22 women sign on to form a new tour after negotiations break down with the USTA. New tour director Gladys Heldman states, "This isn't a war of women against men. It's a war against a few offical swho have simply been two tough." King, Court, and most fo the Slims women have signed on. Two prominent names not on the list are Chris Evert and Evonne Goolagong. Evert's father is a UST loyalist, while Goolagong's handler Vic Edwards has found she can often make more money from guarentees.

The power of Evert soon becomes apparent, as a few weeks later the Ft Lauderdale Virginia Slims event "switches" loyalties literally overnight and instead opts to go put on a USTA sponsored event.

90 pound Jeanne Evert sends shock waves through the event on the opening day when she prevails over Margaret Court. Court suffers from leg cramps. "I started having cramps in the middle of the second set. I was trying to drop shot her so I wouldn't have to run so much."

Jeannie: "I'm dissapointed for her. she had the match won. I don't really consider this a victory."

Stove: "I had nothing to lose, so I tried to make her run a lot. I had lost to Nancy in the past, but I think maybe the fact that I had to play qualifying matches helped me."

Melville has 3 set points on Evert at 5-2 40-0.

Chris before the final: "I think this tournament is the calibre of Forest Hills. It's not a grudge match, but I am eager to play her."

The start of the 4 tournament Dewar indoor circuit. Sponsored by a Scottish Whiskey company, players are presented on court in the finals by a band of Scottish bagpipes.

Court wins rather easily here. She is extended somewhat by Kirk and Heldman though. Kirl led 4-2 and 6-5 30-15 in the first set, and Heldman likewise led 4-3 and 5-4.

Julie was very pleased to reach the final, upsetting Virginai Wade in a tense tussle. The heady Heldman needed 5 match points to put Wade away.

In an early round match Molesworth saved a match point on a net cord vs Beavem recovering from 0-4 and 4-5 in the third.

16 year old Sue Barker promises a good future for British tennis when she pushes Virginai Wade in the 2R. sue served for the second set at 5-4, fell behind 5-6 0-40, then won the tiebreak. From 1-1 in the third Wade ran off 5 straight games.

Wade looked as if she might finally break her losing streak to Margaret in the final. Court was suffering from a cold-even taking antibiotics beforehand. When Wade led 6-2 3-2 30-0 she was on the brink. All it took was two "dreadful shots by Miss Wade, who was never in the match again, losing 10 of the next 12 games" (Dolan).

A pregnant Ann Jones (she is 4 months along) plays the doubles and reaches the semis.

Court sparkled in more ways than one here. For one thing she was wearing a tennis dress desinged by Ted Tinling-the first time in about a decade she had wore a dress. Her play shined too, as she streamrolled the field. Wade felt so helpless in the second set that she turned to the crowd and exclaimed "she cannot miss, can she?". The 38 minute rout was a total contrast to their close fight days before in Nottingham.

Wendy Gilchrist gets married in Croyden hours before going on court to face Margaret.

Nancy Gunter originally the #1 seed broke her nose before the start of the event. Played under the VASS system, where the first person to win 4 points takes the game. Thus there are no deuces.

Francoise Durr is trying out a new backhand-flattening out the shot. "after 15 years I thought I could not change. Poof, a new stroke. I feel so good." One thing hasn't changed-she still uses the frying pan grip she is famous for.

Perhaps she was less confident in the backhand after Wade "routed" her in the semis. Virginia went on to take the $6,000 top prize-a haul of $2,000 per hour. The men's winner here won $10,000 US.

In explaining her success Wade said, "I'm thinking more on court now. I never used to think. Now I'm more relaxed on the court and moving well. And when I'm relaxed, I'm confident."

2,5000 see the finals, which are televised.

Draw notes:
