The field is double that of last year, and so is the prize money (this year's winner got $1,600 compared to $600 in 1971) but the chauvanist attitude reamains the same, as the women's final is put on an outside court. The prize money ratio is still shocking, as the male winner winner in $10,000.

The ladies event gets off to a rocky start when Dutch seeds Stove and Schaar phone to say they are playing in another event and default.

In the second round defending champ Wade falls to her own temper and impatience. She has to wait ait for a re-stringing job on her racquet. She then waits for an umpire that is 1 hour late. Then she waits for her play to get better-which it never does. Moaning about the noise from an adjoining court, she shouts out at one stage. "It's impossible to play so badly!"

Tuero beats Masthoff in a long semi, then takes care of Russian Olga Morozova. This is the first major final for any Russian, male or female. The doubles win for the Russian just makes it all that sweeter.

Was there any prize money-or was the Ojai strictly amateur?

The Sally Ride in the draw is almost certainly the famous astronaut. Ride played tennis as a youth before pursuing a career that led to space flight.

Jan Hasse never found fame. She was later connected to a murder case involving her female lover.

Draw notes:

John Dolan has a 6-4 6-4 score for the Krantzcke-Ziegenfuss 1R match. Resolve.

Poor Mary Ann Eisel has a reputation of blowing set and match points-most famously versus Chris Evert at the 1971 US Open. Here in Indy she holds 7 set points on her serve at 6-5 vs King in the QF and fails to capitalize. The marathon game went to 14 deuces. Mary Ann had 1 more set point (8 total) on sudden death point in the tioebreak.

King's win here means she is the #1 money winner on the Winter-Spring circuit.

The Indy stop is one of the few venues on the Slims tour where the crowds have been thin-only 3,000 attend for the whole week.

The controversy started early, as Jackie Fayter was asked to qualify despite her top ten British ranking.

The wether hardly imporved matters. Bournemouth regulars swore this year was "the grimmest year yet; wind, cold and rain have at different times influenced the tournament, but this year it was all three together." (p 68 of WT) Helga Masthoff played all of her matches in a track suit! #4 seed Slims gal Lesley Hunt wanted to go on court in a tracksuit but this hot nixed as it had a Virginia Slims logo, and the event was sponsored by Rothman's. Leslet lost her opening match.

#2 seed Wade "fell victim to the swirling wind and her inability to cope with it."

Goolagong "delighted the crowd" with sparkling play in the final. She held Masthoff to only 14 points in the opening set. The German made a fight of it in the second, but the end results was never in doubt.

The German professed herself at a loss for how to play Evonne. The only real drama came in the last game, when Evonne wasted 6 match points before Helga made a backhand error on the seventh.

The Slims ladies are mostly absent from this Grand Prix event.

Off court Mary Ann Eisel weds Don Beattie on May 12 in St Louis.

Patti Hogan's match with Cherry Panton has fireworks galore, with the Irish temper of Hogan going off on linesmen and the umpire. Her conduct was so fiery she was reported to Mike Gibson, the tournament referee. Gibson didn't mete out any punishment, noting that, "She [Hogan] was in tears after being told off by a friend when she came off court. I tohught there was no point in taking this another stage further."

Hogan had asked for several linesmen to be removed and hit a ball a ball in anger that just missed Panton. For good measure she directed a few choice words at the umpire.

"What I would like to to say is unprintable", declared Cherry Panton.

The crowd and Nell Truman took care of Hogan in the quarters. Clapping derisively at times, fans were in no mood for misbehavior. Hogan started in at 6-6 all in the first when the umpire told her, "Ball behind you-hold it." The seemingly innoucuous remark set off Hogan, who started a directing heated words at the umpire and Truman. Nell replied, "If you want to win a match that badly I will retire", and started to put on her sweater to go.

Referee Mike Gibson was summoned to the court to sort out affairs. He wasn't so complacent as the day before, particularly after words were directed at him. Hogan said, "I hope you're bloody well satisfied."

Patti lost a close first set and quickly spun downward, leaving the court in tears for a second day in a row.

Reflecting after the match Hogan said, "I know I am playing badly and I feel things are getting worse, but I have no one to talk to or help me get out of this bad spell. If something doesn't change soon I might as well give up the game."

The next day Hogan was disqualified from the mixed competition.
(from the NYT and WT, page 101)

Goolagong won her semi over Truman in 1 hour 18 minutes.

The seeds approved the bizarre system that gives them byes in the first two rounds as protests from unranked players are ignored. The idea is doomed by economics though, as fans stay away in droves during the opening of the event. Only 1,000 come out on opening day.

Officials said they received a wire from Nancy Richey Gunter only an hour before her match vs Gail Chanfreau was scheduled. The wire said she was not coming to Paris. It's a missed opportunity for Gunter, whose strong suit is claty and whom many were touting as a possible #1 for the year up to this point.

A big upset on court in the 3R was Casals loss to Rossouw. Rosie lost leads of 4-0 in set 1 and 3-0 in the second to fall in a close straight sets affair.

The most memorable match for the women was an epic between Kerry Melville and Pam Teeguarden. Kery won 9-7 4-6 16-14-a total of 56 games. Teeguarden had match points serving at 6-5 40-15. Unable to close it, she served for the match 4 times in all. When she doubled faulted on match point down she burst into tears.

Billie Jean King is brandishing a new weapon-a feared drop shot. From the first game of her quarterfinal vs Wade she drop shots the Brit, following any returned gets with passing shots. King also used it to good effect vs clay court expert Masthoff. Helga on King's droppers: "It's a very deceptive, because they come off her racquet just like a slice shot and you think they are just high, and then they just drop down."

King on Masthoff: "My instinctive way of playing seems to be to Helga's advantage. Helga seems to play better the harder and harder I hit." Finding the clay packed harder, King even threw in less drop shots she did vs Wade. Billie Jean did it the hard way, outsteadying Masthoff.

The New York Times said Evonne looked "bored and lethargic" vs Durr. She came out to center court at first without her racquets. She left much of her game behind as well. Evonne woke up enough to break when Durr served for the first set and also rallied at 2-4 down. Close as the score was, the match was not memorable for the quality of play.

Could King claim the missing jewel in the crown? She had won the other 3 grand slams. Here in Paris she had never made the final-indded had never made it past the quarterfinals in 6 previous tries. On the day before the final the self-confessed "old bag" (a pun on her nickname "The Old Lady") said she felt like she was coming down with the flu.

Evonne had questions of her own to answer. Her manager Vic Edwards kept her off the tougher Slims tour all spring except for the Dallas event, and many of the women pros and reporters questioned the widsom of playing softer events for rumored guarentees.

The final was seen by 12,000 fans, eager to view women's tennis at its finest. Evonne tried Billie Jean's tactic of drop and pass-but King likes the net. Nearing the end King patiently waited for Goolagong to make an error. "When you smell a victory, you don't get too anxious", King said. When Evonne netted a backhand Billie Jean threw her racquet sky high and sat sat down to cry tears of joy.

Ironically King had almost skipped Paris. She came, in her words, because it was a mandatory event on the women's Grand Prix and she felt it would give her practice for Wimbledon. In the end it gave her so much more as her "lucky seventh" attempt gave her a career singles slam. In the mind's of most observers any lingering doubts about the #1 slot were settled.

When the dust had settled at Roland Garros Billie Jean King was leading the pack, a position she would go on to cement for 1972.

First prizes are $12,000 for the men vs $4,000 for the women.

Billie Jean King vs Evonne Goolagong not played due to rain-King awarded top prize

The New York Times reports that Goolagong looks completely recovered from the case of shingles that has bothered her in the last month.

Rain washed out the King-Goolagong match (the New York Times calls it "the final"). Officials award the title to Mrs King based on matches won.

1st-Billie Jean King- $2,600
2nd-Evonne Goolagong-$1,820
3rd -Rosie Casals- $1,300
4th-Virginia Wade-$780

This special events featured the winners of Wimbledon (Goolagong) the US (King) and the Australian (Wade)-all majors contested on grass. THE ILTF complained about the nature of the event-as it directly competed with the German Open.

Match of the week wnet to Goolagong-Wade. Wade blew a lead of 5-4 in the first and ended up losing it a tiebreak. She took the next one, but had to climb back from 2-4 in the third. Virginia had a match point at 5-4 yet couldn't close it out. Spectors of last year's match(she lost after holding 5 mps vs Evonne) must have danced through her head. Wade pulled it together though to break Evonne at 5-6. The match lasted 1 hour 52 minutes.

Rain prevented the highly anticipated final between King and Goolagong.

Week of June 12-17

June 17-18 Wightman Cup, Wimbledon, London, England, UK(Grass)
Venue: The All England Club at Wimbledon.

United States d Great Britain 5-2

US Non-Playing Captain Edie McGoldrick

Day 1

Chris Evert (US) d Virginia Wade 6-4 6-4
Joyce Williams d Wendy Overton (US) 6-3 3-6 6-3
Chris Evert/Patti Hogan (US) d Winnie Shaw/Nell Truman 7-5 6-4

Day Two

Patti Hogan (US) d Corinne Molesworth 6-8 6-4 6-2
Chris Evert (US) d Joyce Williams 6-2 6-3
Virginia Wade d Wendy Overton (US) 8-6 7-5
Wendy Overton/Val Ziegenfuss d Virginia Wade/Joyce Williams 6-3 6-3

The absence of pros such as Billie Jean King, Nancy Gunter, and Rosie Casals dared the Brits to hope for a win. Some reporters dare to call the US team "second rate". Little Chris Evert, making her British debut, cooly snuffed out the candle of hope and the critics by taking out British vet Virginia Wade on opening day. Evert moved Wade around "as if on a string" and was unfazed by Wade's stinging serve.

On day two Coriine Molesworth extends Hogan by saving 6 set points to take the opener 6-8-each one a winner. Hogan wears her down in a "dour" match lasting 2 hours plus. The turning point came at 4-4 in the seocnd when Corinne blew a sitter at the net and double faulted to drop serve. Incredibly Patti kep her cool the entire time.

Hogan after the match: "Yeah, she hit six unbelievably good shots. I've been playing better in practice than I have for years. So i said, Why waste it? Get up there at net and do something."

Joyce Williams did all she could to thrwart Evert. Everthing proved to be of no avail. Off speed shots and dinks were relentlessly returned. Joyce fell down several times on the grass. On match point Chris hit the shot of the tournament, an overhead from deep in the court that hit and bounced into the bleachers. Little Miss Ice Dolly, as the Brits have dubbed her, clinches the Cup for the US.

DF: Helen Gourlay/Karen Krantzcke d Rosie Casals/Billie Jean King 6-4 6-2

The draw was remade after players complined the seeds weren't in line with Grand Priz rules. Melville was the original #4 seed above Durr despite Frankie being higher in the Grand Priz standings. Krantzcke had been put in qualifying.

Billie Jean looked ill at ease in adjusting to the slippery grass in her first match. She won through though, and the rest of the way was a breeze-in no other match was she extended more than 5 games.

Rosie Casals may have had a good reason for being subdued in her loss to King. The Rosebud was reported to the referee after her quarter win over Stove. Betty was lucky to be there, having survived match points vs Dalton. The umpire said Casals, "was argumentative, showed bad behavior and sportmansship, and made a rude gesture to a linesman." As a result Casals got a reprimand and a warning from the tournament committee. If that wasn't enough she got a second dressing down for her "commercial" outfit before going on court.

Kerry calls her upset of Evonne the "the best" of her career. Kerry saved 2 set points at 5-6 and minutes later ran off 11 straight points to capture the critical first set. Evonne took the middle chapter and then fell in the third as Kerry reasserted herself with aggressive play.

In the final Billie Jean swept Kerry off the court in a quick 40 minutes with a stream of winning volleys. King collected the $5,600 for the top rpize, while Melville took home $2,600.

Draw note:
#1 seed Rosie Casals withdrew due to tendonitus but still entered the doubles. Her place in the singles draw is taken by alternate Kora Schediwy.

Some of the top women are limping into Wimbledon. #1 seed here Rosie Casals withdraws due to tendonitus. A rusty Julie Heldman plays and loses her first since dropping off tour in March to have knee surgery requiring 48 stitches. Julie led a set and 4-2-at that point the knee began to bother her. Carole Graebner, a top tenner in the mid 60s, has been suffering form a virus for over 6 weeks. "These days I'm only a good first set player" she says after losing in 3 sets to Wightman Cupper Molesworth.

Nancy Gunter has been missing from action and mysteriously withdrew from the French a few weeks back. With Wimbledon's seeding committee about to meet referee Mike Gibson calls her in Texas to confirm her entry. "I'll be there" she told him.

Overton survives a match point vs Ziegenfuss, who "mistakenly served it to her backhand, her stronger side". Val had earlier upset a moody Wade.

Wendy stretched Chris in the semis-she led a set and 2-1 when Chris went on a 9 game tear.

As an amateur Chris turns down the $780 top prize. Incredibly she final without hitting one volley or overhread-on grass!

Casals and King won the doubles. Curiously they will not play together at Wimbledon.

Summary:

Excitement ran high in the lead-up to this year's Championships. Mrs King, oddsmaker's favorite at 5-4, was looking for a second major this year and a lock on the world's #1 spot. Defending champ Evonne Goolagong was looking to repeat, and Nancy Gunter, who had won several Slims events in the spring, looked a good bet as a dark horse.

And then there was Miss Ice Dolly. Chrissie Evert was seeded #4. Making her European debut she swept through the Wightman Cup and won at Queen's. When the draw pitted her against Goolagong in semis the press and public went mad at the prospect of a showdown.

Chrissie had her hands full getting out of her 1R match. Her opponent was Val Ziegenfuss, a solid player who likes to attack the net. Evert won the first game and then succumbed to a blitz as Val seized 6 straight."For a while Val was irresistable. She was holding her service without strain, and in those endless rallies she would pounce on some short ball and come careening to the net to put the point away." Slowly but surely Evert tightened the screws. Val led 3-2 in sets 2 and 3 without getting the vital games needed to win.

The next round was quiet for the msot part-Laura Dupont saved 3 match points (some with sure volleys) and then won seven games running to beat Wightman Cupper Joyce Williams.

The third round gave hints of upsets to come. Would Billie Jean get it together? She looked shaky and was muttering to herself in the first game vs Ceci Martinez, serving up 4 double faults. She won that game, then cruised on to a routine win. The Ice Dolly saw a familair face across the net. At the US Open she saved 6 match points to beat Mary Ann Eisel, now Mrs Beattie. Evert looked an easy winner at 5-2, then dropped 4 games to go down 5-6. As usual Chris stayed coool under pressure, saving a set point and eeking out a 8-6 8-6 win. It was fiery Patti Hogan who delivered the shock of the day, taking out #5 seed Melville with an assortment of slices and soft stuff.

All the remaining seeds were on cruuse control in the $R except for Goolagong, who had all she could handle from unheralded Russian Olga Morozova. Down 3-5 in the third, Evonne prodcued 3 stunning passing shots to break back. Fortune smiled on her near the end as she was aided by two netcords in the last game. "When I'm down like that, I'm sometimes able to get inspiration. I was able to push myself."

Evonne flirted with disaster again in the Quarters vs Durr. According to the NYT, "As unconcerned as if she were skipping rope, a happy-go-lucky Evonne trailed by 5-6 and 0-30 in the first set and 2-5 in the second before those wonderful shots came to hand. In a five game surge at the end she won 8-6 7-5, as if it had been ordained all along." Meanwhile Evert struggles in the middle set as Patti Hogan Hammers down 7 aces, but Chris sails through the third.

Now the most anticipated match for many a year will come to pass. Evert says she will hit to Evonne's weaker forehand. Evonne's mentor Vic Edwards bemoans her carefree attitude, predicting disaster against someone of Evert's calibre. "I guess this must be a big match, because everyone keeps telling me so", Evonne mused.

Nancy Gunter was just 6 points away from a win at 6-3 30-0. She got no further, as Rosie swept the next 8 games for a major upset. With this defeat the chance of Nancy finishing #1 for the year went up in smoke.

The King-Wade encounter was the best played match of the quarters. Unstoppable in the opener, King gave Wade a long stare when Virginia went on a tear with the roar of the crowd in her ears. Wade continued her fineplay in the third, but King raises her play to an even higher plane. The match ends on a delicate stab volley that clips the line. This is the only set Billie Jean will drop all year in the 3 majors she contests.

King predicatably swept aside Casals as a curtainraiser to the match of the year. Evert looked a winner at 6-3 3-0 before Evoone turned it on and won 6 straight games for set two. Evoone on how she was told to play Chris: "He (Viv Edwards) told me to come to the net as much as possible and second, to cut them short on her backhand side, so Chris would have to come up."

Was it King's determination to regain the #1 spot that allowed her to ignore several bad calls in the final? She played as if on a quest. King: "I won 19 tournaments last year. I won over $100,000. I felt I was the best", she said. Despite her incredible stats most pundits rated Goolagong #1 for 1971 based on her Wimbledon win.

The first set of the final was flat. King was nervous and double faulted 4 times. Evonne was slow to start. King took a tame affair, wisely opting not to challenge questionable calls against her that might have drawn the disaaproval of the crowd down on her.

The second was much better, with the first break for Billie Jean coming in the key 7th game. Evonne's first serve was deadly, but King regularly took advantage of a short second serve to storm the net. Billie Jean won the last 4 games before a mostly silent crowd.

Goolagong after the final: "I don't feel that upset about losing. I feel more relieved." In another quote she admitted, "I went on my usual 'walkabout'." On the crowd, "When she [Billie Jean] hits a bit short or hits out and everybody claps it upsets me. I just don't think it's fair."

King on the reaction of the crowd: "They love you here when you are coming up. They don't like winners. And they especially don't like me because I talk about money all the time. I'm mercenary. I'm a rebel."

Men's winner received $12,500 US compared to $6,000 for the women's winner.

Draw notes:
#3 seed Val Ziegenfuss did not show up for the event. Her place taken by Carole Graebner.
#6 seed isn't known for certain. I infer Williams as the #6 seed based on draw position.

Hogan is impressed after being whipped by Wade. , saying, "If Virginia played like she does against me all the time, she would be Wimbledon champion." Virginia was miffed about her Wimbledon seeding (2 spots below Melville) and determined to prove a point here. The imperious Wade looked to win early, but she lost the first set of the fial after having a set point at 5-4 and lost in straights.

This is the last year the Irish Open will be held on grass. In 1973 the event switches to a hard court. 29 year old (and Irisgh#1) Geraldine Barniville, mother of 3 and a dublin doctor, almost takes out the #2 seed Pretorius in the QF.

Evonne won her two opening matches on the same day to get her caught up in the draw.

The "Irish" Sue Minford is having a major dispute with the Iriah Tennis Federation. She insists that "I am British, very British, and there were political reasons why I did not want to play in Dublin." (p 80 of WT) Minford agreed to represent Ireland for Fed Cup in South Africa but now says she is being "blackmailed", as refusing to play might get her banned.

FI: Evonne Goolagong [1] and Bety Stove [6] split title due to rain

Evonne Goolagong barely made it to her 2R match, arriving from London only 15 minutes before the start time. After her 1R matcgh the popular Aussie was flown to London to receive the MBE, awarded by Queen Elizabeth II. Evonne ran through her 1R foe in a mere 33 minutes.

Brenda Kirk upsets Judy Dalton, with the tired Aussie retiring down 0-3 in the third. Dalton announces she is retiring. (Later in the 1970s she will return to play selected events). Brenda then goes on to upsend #2 seed Wade, breaking Virginia once in each set.

Does Betty Stove somehow curse finals? This is the second final this year she has seen rained out. Weeks earlier her final at Chichester was also cancelled.

Chris Evert d Evonne Goolagong (Aus) 6-3 4-6 6-0
Margaret Court/Kerry Melville (Aus) d Wendy Overton/Val Ziegenfuss 6-1 6-2

About 21,000 come out over 3 days. A crowd of 7,012 on day 2. This event was Margaret Court's return tothe tour after the birth of her son Danny earlier in the year.

The slow Roylene courts favored Evert, who was the darling of the crowds.

Kerry Melville was on the edge of defeat at 2-6 4-5 0-30. She thne won 8 straight points. From that point on Overton was done in by both Kerry and a pulled muscle.

Chris Evert apparently has a boyfriend. Captain Carole Graebner said the story "looked like an upset mother waiting for her teenage daughter to come home from a date." Chris pulled up 30 minutes late in a car driven by fellow tennis player Jimmy Connors. Chris was embarassed enough to be hunched over in the car. (page 84 of WT-October 1972)

Top prize was $6,000. In the final Durr had a match point at 6-5 in set two. Rosie saves it and goes on a tear, winning 32 of tge last 37 points. Rosie had this to say about her win: "After two sets I realized one of us would probably have to drop dead. I felt pretty good going into the third set but she was obviously streaming after losing the second."

Off court the Slims women vote to discontinue giving 10 percent of prize money to the ITLF sponsored Grand Prix. The reason given is the disproportionate points the ITLF awards to non-American events with smaller prize money.

Kathy Kuykendall shares her views on tennis with Bill Sheldon of the Miami Herald. On dating: "I've never dated. I don't have time. Besides, boys are stupid. I'd only date 'em if they could play tennis. And then I'd only date 'em on the court." (World Tennis, Oct 1972 page 88)

Nancy Gunter defaulted here. In an interviwe with Jery Gibson of the Ledger-Enquirer she opined on why she is the only woman unbeaten by Chris Evert. The 5-0 Nancy remarked: "There is really no secret in beating Chris. We both play the same style of tennis and I think I play it a bit better than she does. I hit the ball harder." Nancy went on to acknowledge that Chris was sure to imptovre, but that she got better each year as well. (page 84 October 1972 WT)

Court took home $4,000 US for winning her first tournament since coming back-the only mother in the Open era to do so. It looked unlikely as Evonne led 5-3 in the third. It was then that Court hit more to her forehand. Margaret saved a break point when she served it out at 6-5. Two weeks ago, I thought I would never win the first tournament I entered.I never expected to do this well so quickly."

Evonne: "It just shows what a champion Margaret is. She's been away from tennis for over a year and she's behind in the third set but she still comes back and wins."

Court notes her serve is better and believes she's dropped some weight-losing aobut 10 pouns to get down to 142.

Draw note: According to the NYT is is Court/Teeguarden who are #1 seeds-with Goolagong/Hunt at #2.

Evert wins a televised final going away in set two. The first set was quite another tale, as Goolagong rushed out to a 5-0 led. Evonne had a set point on serve at 5-2. After losing the tiebreak the aussie only wins 1 more game. As an amateur Chris turns down the $5,000 top prize. The top prize for the men was $8,000.

World Tennis wrote that the women totally overshadowed the men here. Even the first round doubles match of the Evert sisters got a standing room only crowd. The magazine said that "while Mrs Court played admirably after a one year layoff and only two weks of competition, she found it hard to concentrate and was still not moving well."
