From the ‘Rand Daily Mail’, April 19, 1960:
By Norman Canale
Mrs Bernice Vukovich (Carr), the Svengali of Ellis Park, mesmerized Miss Sandra Reynolds in the women’s singles final of the South African Championships yesterday to regain the crown she last wore in 1958, with a well-merited 6-1 2-6 12-10 victory earned in 2 hours and 16 minutes of fluctuating play.
In one of the most dramatic final sets ever contested in these championships the players had the 4,000 crowd biting their nails with excitement. And towards the end of the match both girls suffered from cramp and at times looked as though they would collapse from exhaustion. In the fifteenth game of that final exciting set Sandra started limping about the court as cramp started binding the calf muscle in her right leg.
In the nineteenth game Bernice found herself anchored to the baseline after a hectic rally, with cramp in both thighs. Both girls took salt pills to counteract the cramp between games over the tail-end of the one-and-a-half hour set. The lengthy rallies – I counted as many as forty, yes, forty strokes played for a single point in the final set and an average of sixteen strokes per point would be a pretty good average over those final twenty-two games – was more nerve-wracking than watching the most horrific horror film.
I said earlier that Bernice mesmerised Sandra to win this match. How else can one describe it, as Sandra, normally a hard-hitting player, slowed down her shots for most of the final set and tried to outstay a master of that type of game. She played into Mrs Vukovich’s hands and thus lost the tactical battle. But even then it was desperately close for Bernice.
Both players’ arms must have felt like lead piping and their lungs like red hot bellows as they forced their protesting sinews and muscles on to even greater efforts in a supreme bid to gain the upper hand. I must doff my hat to Bernice. Sandra is acknowledged to have the stronger game – but it was Mrs Vukovich who did whatever forcing there was to do. She attacked the net quite often and smashed and volleyed as though she had been doing it right through her career. Bernice told me afterwards that she owed a vote of thanks to her coach, Russell Seymour, who helped improve her smashing and volleying.
If Seymour could bring about such a change in Mrs Vukovich’s game in such a short time, the South African Lawn Tennis Association should think seriously about sending Seymour to Europe with our women players – Bernice and Renée Schuurman – as official coach.
Mrs Vukovich took the first set 6-1 in thirteen minutes flat. Bernice played well, but Sandra made far too many mistakes. The second set was a repetition of the first, but this time it was Mrs Vukovich who made the errors, and it was Sandra who played the most winning shots. Then the stage was set for that final seesawing set. Sandra started off as though she wanted to get an early train back to Bloemfontein. She went into a 2-0 lead via some serving and fine volleying. But back came Bernice to level at 2-all – and then games fluctuated until Mrs Vukovich finally broke Sandra’s service once and for all in the twenty-first game and held her own to win.
Draw notes:
Estelle Dellar=nee van Tonder.
*It is impossible for Yvonne Wilkerson to be on two doubles teams in the same event. As World Tenis confirms her partnership with Dellar, Mark's suggestion she was the partner of Charleen Rigby is almost certainly incorrect. Could there be a 2nd Wilkerson?
