Circa late July, American Tennis Association Championships, Wilberforce, Ohio, US
Venue: Wilberforce College

FI: Won by Althea Gibson
Tournament dates: Aug 21-26
Women's singles final was played Friday the 25th, moved up so that Gibson could travel to Forest Hills.

1R
Althea Gibson -bye
Roumania Peters [4] d Rosemary Darben 6-3 6-3

2R Gibson d Helen Watson 6-0 6-2

3R Gibson d Jewell Plummer 6-0 6-0

QF Gibson d Margaret Peters 6-0 6-3

SF Gibson d R Peters 6-0 6-3

FI Gibson d Nana Davis 6-2 6-0

Girls
FI Florence Gibson d Lorraine Williams 6-1 6-0

Williams was 11 years old. In some years, there were separate "juniors" and "under 15" divisions, so it's possible that her match was in the U15. Unfortunately there wasn't much coverage of this event.

There's reason to be suspicious of the matching 6-0 6-3 scores for Gibson against the Peters sisters, but they came from different news reports on different days, so while it's possible a mistake was made, it wasn't as simple as someone typing a score twice in the same story.

Betz beat Moran 9 out of 10 in their early pro series matches.
Madison Square Garden, New York City, October 26

Pauline Betz d Gussy Moran 6-0 6-3
Moran/Jack Kramer d Betz/Pancho Segura 6-1 6-3

This was the opener of the 100-city (!) tour.

"Mrs Addie started off the match like a whirlwind, as if she meant to win quickly--and this she did, within 40 minutes. She broke Gussy's service in the second game on a down-the-line placement and Gussy's double fault, and roared on from there."

Betz d Moran ???

The stop in Pittsburgh is described as two nights, with the Oct 30 exhibition described as the first of two nights. I can't find any reports of the Oct 31 matches. However, the won-loss records given later in the series suggest that I'm missing one Betz win. It's always possible that the second night in Pitt was canceled and I'm missing a different meeting entirely, but this seems fairly likely.

Described as "11th victory in 12 matches" but it's really 10-1-1 -- the won-loss records given in news reports are not entirely consistent, especially by giving Betz credit for a win instead of the one tie so far.

The players head home for Christmas.

"Bobby Riggs, professional tennis player and promoter commenting on the failure of Gussie Moran and Pauline Betz Addie to draw large crowds: 'You're not a real promoter until you've lost some money.'"

Moran was guaranteed $75,000 as an advance on 30% of the gate, though a few reports are skeptical. Other sources say $50,000. Either one would make her the highest-paid female athlete in the world. Betz was guaranteed $12,000. Kramer took a pay cut to accommodate Moran; last year he got 30%, this year he gets 25%. Segura gets $500/week.

Betz "won her 30th match in 36 starts" (probably counts ties)

(Dec 30)
???

The Victoria stop was definitely planned for two nights, but there is no newpaper coverage of the second night. It's possible it was called off (no mention of crowd numbers for the first night), and also possible that newspapers didn't cover it because they were off their usual routine for New Year's Eve.

I have Betz leading 27-6-2 going into the break, so 29-6-2 after the 29th. Tough to reconcile that with the news report that says 30-6.

The tour continues on the west coast in January -- looks like the first 1951 date is January 2nd in Spokane. If I continue with this, I'll post those results in the 1951 thread.

The round of 16 is listed in the LA Times as the second round, but there is no sign of a first round. There definitely wasn't a round played the day before the 2nd round; I found a schedule of play, and it's all men's matches. So unless some/all of those women played 1R matches on the same day as their 2R matches, it's really just a field of 16.

The results previously listed in this thread had Baker's 2R match as a 3R, and was missing two of the 3R matches. I've got everything that was printed in the LA Times, though it is either missing a few 2Rs, or maybe a few 2Rs were mistakenly listed as 1Rs. I searched specifically for a 2R match for Connolly, but no luck.

This is quite something, also from the LA Times:

"[T]he ambidextrous Beverly [Baker] managed to make the [mixed] finals against such stern competition while performing with a tremendous handicap. Not long ago she was informed by her physician that a torn ligament in her right shoulder would not heal. It was a little less than three weeks ago that Beverly started to work on a left-handed serve, and the results yesterday were remarkable with so little practice. The shoulder injury does not bother her ground strokes on the right side, however."

It's very possible that some 1R and 2R (and possibly 3R) matches are listed with the incorrect round. The newspapers didn't identify rounds at all, and since many players were flying in from other tournaments and arriving late, the schedule was packed. Baker "played" her first three matches in a single day, though the third was a default.

Final was postponed to Monday the 17th. Both Rawls and Hopkins played matches on the 17th at the Pennsylvania and Eastern States Championships, and the Philadelphia Inquirer, which covered this tournament extensively, never mentioned a result of the final, let alone a score.

Also, the note about Doyle vs Jahn belongs to the Western Chps of the same week.
