A translation of a piece from the German publication "Der Tennissport" dated June 7, 1940:

"Official Announcement of the Tennis Section in the National Socialist Reich Association for Physical Exercise"

"Berlin-Charottenburg 9, Reichsportfeld, Haus des Deutschen Sports, Fernruf 99 62 11, Postscheckkonto Berlin 120 614

"[...] The war situation and the special circumstances make it necessary that the participation of national players in tennis events of any kind can only take place with the prior authorisation of the Special Section/Fachamt.

"This authorisation can be obtained both from the Area Special Warden/Bereichsfachwart or the club and by the player himself and will be issued without further ado wherever it is required.

"The Special Section reserves the right to select the doubles team in each case; any related wishes must therefore always be submitted in good time with the application for authorisation to play.

Week of June 24-30

June 22-30, Tri-State Championships, Cincinnati, Ohio, US (Clay)

FI: Alice Marble d. Gracyn Wheeler 6-3 6-4

DF: Mary Arnold/Alice Marble d. Nina Brown (GB)/Mary Hardwick (GB) 7-5 6-4

Marble is severely tested by Bernhard in the SF, losing set and nearly the match itself. Alice is pushed to the limit by Bernhard, who has 6 match points! Alice as "on the brink at 1-5 and 4 -5" with 3 match points saved in each game. "To Helen's credit, she did not give an inch and Alice had to win outright nearly all of the six points."Helen was unlucky she had played Pat Canning a long 3 set match earlier in the day-the Tri State schedule being backed up by rain. American Lawn Tennis confirms that her last singles defeat was Wimbledon of 1938.

The rain contributed to slowing down Alice's game, which was based on attack.

From "American Lawn Tennis", September 5, 1940: "The twenty-fourth annual championships of the American Tennis Association lived up to its advance notice by being one of the best from a competitive and social standpoint ever held. [...] The tree-studded campus of Wilberforce University near Xenia, Ohio, was the scene of this year's meeting, as it was in 1936. Ten clay courts in good condition were available, with room for about 1,500 spectators on the last two days. Just about this many attended and enjoyed matches that were run off like clockwork by the association and tournament officials."

Because she was considered by far the best female player in the Netherlands at the time this tournament was held, especially in the absence of Gertruid Terwindt, Madzy Rollin Couquerque did not take part in the women’s singles event in Noordwijk. Instead she entered the men’s singles event, where she lost to Huib Wilton in the first round of the main draw, 6-4 3-6 6-4. She had previously beaten three male players to qualify for the main draw.

Alice captures her 4th Essex title. More importantly, this is her 27th consecutive tournament win in a row. Marble rolled over Betz in a one sided final. Betz is the find of the season, havng won 8 of her last 16 events. The last 3 times they met Betz took the first set. On this day Alice was at her best, never letting Pauline in the door.

The doubles was a stark contrast.

For 2 hours and over 40 games the British pair of Hardwick and Scott kept Marble and Palfrey on tenterhooks. Even closer was their semi, where Betz and Osborne came within 5 points of victory. At 4 all 40-0 Pauline and Margaret dropped 5 points and the game on 3 missed smashes and 1 botched volley.

Marble and Palfrey thus remained unbeaten-having never lost as a team since they first paired in 1936.

The world champ did get a scare in the quarters. Dodo Bundy took the middle set 6-2. Was the upset of the year in the offing? Hardly. Alice took revenge by sweeping the next 6 games. Dodo managed only 12 points.

Madden=ME Madden. Is this Baba or Sissy?

A capacity crowd of about 3,600 watches the doubles semifinals at Longwood. Only half that show for the finals. Marble and Palfrey won for the 5th straight year. This is Palfrey's 8th US doubles crown. The 1st seeded foreign team of Hardwick/Scott go out in the semis to Bundy/Van Ryn, who were the first unseeded pair to reach the ladies doubles final since seeding began.

The 35 minute final had a bit of drama as Bundy and Van Ryn led 4-3 in the first set. Alice was off form and Dodo was on, keeping things close. Bundy fell off in form though, and the superior team won in straights.

-------------------------------------------------------

Draw notes:

Andrade=married name of Barnett
Mrs. Walter Blumenthal-Muad Blumenthal, formerly the Baroness Levi, nee Rosembaum.
Mrs. William Hester=nee Lilian Scharman.
Painter =married name of Marjorie Morrill.

The ALT draw sheet is missing a match. Also-the magazine reports play between Goldschmidt and Bixley, yet lists it in the draw as a default.

A strange stat: Only 8 of 46 women's matches went to 3 sets, yet in each case the loser of the first set won.

Total attendence was 48,410 at Forest Hills. This was down from 60,255 in 1939 and 81,472 in 1938.

-------------------------------------------------------

Summary:

Osborne had 3 match points vs. Bernhard in the stadium during round 3, leading 5-3 in set 2. The first was lost on a forced error, the other two on the way to the net. Margaret "has a service in the class of Alice Marble", but made the rash errors of inexperience. She double faulted on game point down to let Helen back in the contest.

Marble waltzes to her 3rd consecutive title at a lose of only 27 game sin 6 matches. She has been undefeated since 1938. With a World War she has no hope of capturing what may have been many more Wimbledons. She retires from amateur tennis at the end of 1940 and plays a pro tour in 1941, later moving to tennis writing and commentary.

The Jacobs-Wolfenden QF had an exciting finish. Helen was leading 5-4 0-40 when she reeled off 5 straight points to finish it, one spectacular rally saw her scrap out 5 volleys from mid court.

In the final Helen "tried everything from spinning chops to net rushing, to no avail ."

Note: There was no Lenz Cup as such at the Merano tournament in 1940; instead an event much reduced in class, and using a similar format to that used for the Lenz Cup, was held. It was the only women’s singles event held during the Merano tournament this year. The Second World War brought an end to the glory days of this tournament.
