16 Greatest - now down to 8!

Round 1 of the WTA Tour’s fan search for the Greatest Match in Professional Women’s Tennis History is now over. With your help, we’ve narrowed the field down from 16 to eight matches. Here are your selections:

1981 US Open Final Austin d. Navratilova 16 76(4) 76(1)
1985 Roland Garros Final Evert d. Navratilova 63 67(4) 75
1990 VS Championships Final Seles d. Sabatini 64 57 36 64 62
1991 US Open Semifinal Seles d. Capriati 63 36 76(3)
1992 Roland Garros Final Seles d. Graf 62 36 10-8
1999 Roland Garros Final Graf d. Hingis 46 75 62
2002 Australian Open Final Capriati d. Hingis 46 76(7) 62
2003 US Open Semifinal Henin-Hardenne d. Capriati 46 75 76(4)

In Week 4 of the First Round, the 2003 US Open Semifinal was the runaway winner, attracting as many votes as the other three contenders combined! In the First Round we had a total of 18,000-plus votes.
For the Second Round of voting, we have randomly placed the Top 8 matches into two pools of four. Voting will proceed as in previous weeks, with two matches from each week advancing to the Final Round, which will take place the week of 27 October.

The winning match will be deemed the fans’ choice for the Greatest Match In Professional Women’s Tennis History and announced during the season-ending Bank of America WTA Tour Championships presented by Porsche next month, as part of the WTA Tour’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

A separate media vote is currently underway, the winner of which will also be announced in Los Angeles.

I voted Graf-Hingis :)

No Venus vs Hingis?! No Serena vs Hingis?!

Hmm....I think people stuck with the more recent Jen vs Justine. Hahaha, Jen´s three times on the list, but she only won once...because she met an even bigger CHOKER that day.

aahh pluuzzz! Leading by a set and 4-0!!!!!! and you still lost?! That´s choking! No matter what you call it! I like Martina, but that was a BAD choke-job.

The same as Serena did at Wimbledon ´01. No problem to saying that. Truth is the truth!

Jen should no way lose a match where she had a set and 5-3 lead and then a 5-3 lead again in the third! That´s choking! And if I´ve an opinion, I can say it. Jen plays a lot of beautiful matches, but she rarely WINS them. Recall all her recent matches against Serena.

It's useless... Not only most people will vote only for a match which involves their favourite player, but how many people who voted saw the matches between 81 and 98?

And for the 3 recent matches, they aren't "great" at all. Intense, emotionnals and memorable yes, "great", no.
Very true. That's why this poll is simply stupid.

And I really don't understand how Capriati/Hingis AO '02 made the list. In that extreme heat, it was more about who could stand up the longest rather than actual tennis.
