Tennis fans are pretty good target demographic. (ie rich, plenty of disposable income)
Companies want to reach them so easiest way would be to have the "#1 ranked" player represent them.

Obvious examples of this is Turkish Airline's endorsement of Caro.

I'm curious what kind of endorsements Petra will get in coming month. :)

Btw, if Turkish Airlines were to hire Petra....:tape:

And when she loses it and slowly drops out of the Top 10. We will :wavey:

Odd how the past one and a half years we have been hearing how unimportant being #1 is and yet everybody seems to pee their pants in excitement about it all of a sudden

At least try to cover up the hypocrisy a little more carefully..

If she was concerned with chasing endorsements then the tag "Wimbledon Champion" would have done the trick rather better. The fact that she hasn't even bothered to get someone to set up a website for her yet suggests to me that Petra is more concerned with playing tennis than the trimmings that come with it.

Winning Wimbledon certainly created endorsement opportunities for Sharapova, and she wasnt near #1.
Kournikova got the endorsements after a Wimbledon SF appearance.

It depends on a lot of factors.

There's no hypocrisy at work here at all, Jimmie. Caro's possession of the #1 ranking is widely perceived as a shame by tennis fans who expect it to be backed up by winning slams and big events. So there is understandable excitement over the fact that the ranking is likely to be taken from her and given to someone who has won a slam and the YEC and had the best record against the top 10 players last year: the #1 ranking will correspond to the reality of who has performed best, and that's a good thing for tennis.

I didn't say anything about the merits of #1 ranking within the sport of tennis.
Just the financial implication in the global corporate advertising.

The truth is, Caro will always be more popular and clinch more endorsements than comparable players because of her personality and the way she looks.

So I don't think dropping to #2 for a while will do any damage in that regard. Look at Sharapova for example, once a player is known and loved their current ranking has little influence on their pulling power.

Really?
No one in the states except NY know who WOzniacki is at all.
In fact more people here know of Li Na and Schiavone or hell even Azarenka than PushWOz.
She ain't got no pullin power honey :wavey:

Really? Why does she appear in all the search engine rankings as one of the leading WTA players? Why does she have more twitter followers than most other top players? Why does she appear in all those athlete rankings as one of the few tennis players?

Sorry but that point has been proven wrong a long time ago, people like her a lot and that's one of the main reasons for her financial success. As long as she won't drop out of the #5 and maintains visibility she won't have no problems in that regard.

Of course it's exciting. A lot of people, myself included, see Kvitova as the future of women's tennis. It's cool to see that she's starting to take the big steps towards fulfilling her promise (Wimbledon and Istanbul were other steps). It was a completely different scenario with Wozniacki, so it's pretty pointless to compare the two and roll your eyes at people's excitement. She seemed to get it almost by default, as the two best players at the most important events (Serena and Kim) had extensive injury lay-offs these last couple years.

Cry hypocrisy all you want, love :wavey:

Its impossible to prove who's popular in a given city or country.
But the exhibition at Madison Square Garden in NYC is between Wozniacki & Sharapova. The mens match is Roddick & Federer.
So she's probably not unpopular in NY.
Caroline played Kim in Belgium, Thailand, they went out of their way for her to come to Perth with a male partner who wasnt going to win a match
The exhibition popularity has similar factors to the endorsement popularity

No, Wozniacki is nowhere near enough charismatic or hot* for the world at large to remember her once she loses her #1 and her crown achievements aren't significant enough to make her an important figure despite her personality or looks. If her performance since RG continues (for the most part she had great difficulties passing early rounds, if that), no one will care about her either way in a few months once she's out of top 5 or even top 10.

*I'd say she isn't hot at all, but different strokes for different folks

Sharapova was off the tour for a while, and isnt the same player, but still has endorsements.

Part of what makes Caroline popular to sponsors is that she wins the most tournaments, most matches, reaches the most finals and most semis over the last 2 years. That gets her name out there.

not anymore. And given how small the delta between #1 and #10, she will drop rapidly (unless something changes drastically in her game, but the last two matches are not a sign of that)
