Okay we have a new #1. <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0"> And three other players within hailing distance of the ranking.

Scenario 1) Jenn wins OZ 2002, and stays #1 at least til RG. While this is fairly likely, its boring. The next scenario offers much more interesting possiblities.

Scenario 2) Jenn doesn't win OZ 2002 and loses the #1 ranking. Currently ...

01 4867 J.CAPRIATI
02 4842 M.HINGIS
03 4496 L.DAVENPORT
04 4333 V.WILLIAMS
05 3280 K.CLIJSTERS

If Jenn loses #1, who wil get it?

Lindsay seems the likeliest choice to me.

She's healthy.
She's playing now.
She's winning now.
She's won OZ before.
She's less than 400 points behind Jenn.

Martina's injured.
Venus (as usual) is not playing much between the US and OZ.
Kim is 1600 points back. <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0">

You don't use those points Volcona.... you should take the Chase points. Those points you used include points that have not been defended this year. So they are not accurate. It should be:

01 J.CAPRIATI....... 4642
02 V.WILLIAMS.......4128
03 M.HINGIS......... 3946
04 L.DAVENPORT....3740

As you can see, Davenport has to defend 650 more points this year, if she doesn't she isn't a likely candidate for number 1. And she has adidas international finalist points to defend before AO, so she is not a good pick. She trails by too much.

Venus on the other hand, if she plays Chase and Linz, will gain ground on Capriati. If they are within 400 points by the Austrialian Open, then it'll come down to who does better at the Austrialian Open. If Capriati wins it again Capriati is still number one. If Venus wins it, no matter what Capriati does, Venus is number 1. Most importantly, as long as Venus goes a round further than Capriati she'll be number 1. But first, she has to put herself in such a position first, but doing well at BOTH Linz and Chase.

Thanks for the correction. Nice to see Venus has a good chance. However, I won't be shocked if Jenn defends.

Or an additional scenario. Jen could win OZ again, beat Venus or Lindsay in the Final, and lose the #1 ranking to her losing finalist.

Also Jennifer has to defend her title at Luxemburg, Davenport has to defend Linz and Adidas, and Martina won't play the next six weeks, so she is losing the point froms Swisscom and the Chase. Venus has to defend her Semis at Linz, and I think she won't play it this year.

So.... We have to wait at least the results of The Chase, to predict what will happen.

I hope Venus can reach it!!

Something you might not know, had Kim beat Jennifer in SF and Martina in F at Australian Open 2002, she would have become #1 in the world, with a slam.
