Game 32 – Close Encounters of the Musical Kind

Song Five – Ry Cooder (with Juliette Commagere) – El U F O Cayo

Result: SF 4th – Final 6th

Reason for choosing the song: This was my very first entry to the game, and at the time I thought it was a pretty adventurous start to the game. I was pleasantly surprised it did so well. I thought it was doubly fitting to the theme, since it is not only about aliens, but it is a beautiful song that earth could be proud to send into space.

About the song/artist: Ry Cooder is best known as a peerless guitar player and explorer of lesser-known folk music styles, like dustbowl blues, early jazz, tex-mex, etc., but has always had one foot in the contemporary music scene as well. This song is not exactly typical of his music (but his oeuvre is so varied, what is?), but it does feature some beautiful electric guitar work by him. However, the show is stolen by his daughter-in-law Juliette Commagere on vocals.

The song is taken from the 2005 concept album Chavez Ravine, a collection of songs that celebrate the Mexican-American LA neighbourhood of that name that was demolished in the 1950s, to make way for the Brooklyn Dodgers stadium when they moved to Los Angeles. Among many other stories about this poor but colourful and vibrant neighbourhood is that of the landing by aliens, who offered to transport the locals to their home planet, where they would finally be treated with respect and dignity. The voice of the chief alien is supplied by the Mexican-American musician and composer Don Tosti, who died shortly after recording this, and to whom the album is dedicated.

Game 33 – Personal Theme Songs

Song Twenty-Two – The Duhks – It’s Alright Ma, I’m Only Bleedin’

Result: SF 14th - Final n.a.

Reason for choosing the song: This was a more challenging theme, since I don’t really have a personal theme song. I did want to take the theme as seriously as possible though, so I went with a song with lyrics that spoke to me personally. This is how I explained it in the interview:
Quote:

This song’s message (as I read it at least): don’t become discouraged and self-pitying in the face of the setbacks and massive hypocrisy you will inevitably face in life, but try to remain as true as possible to your honest self. I don’t often succeed in that, but I try.

About the song/artist: I considered nominating a Dylan version, which I love, but these are all in the 7-8 minute range, and having already nominated an 8-minute song in the first game, I didn’t want to push my luck. This is an excellent cover by the Duhks (pronounced “Ducks”), a Canadian-American progressive folk band. Covering a classic song is a risky proposition, but these guys trod the fine line between excessive reverence and cavalier popularization in a way that few covers of Dylan songs in the past have managed. This seems to be very typical of their approach to music in general. They are quite eclectic in their approach, borrowing from styles as diverse as soul, gospel, cajun and zydeco as well as a lot of Celtic and even Latin music. They use very imaginative arrangements which often combine strongly banjo-driven rhythms with kickass vocal tracks, but also perform beautiful and haunting ballads.

The song itself represents Dylan’s absolute prime as a songwriter in my opinion. He still had one foot in the folk-scene, which lends the song a sense of urgency and relevance that some of his more spaced-out later stuff lacked, but his command of lyrics and vocal delivery were rarely if ever better than they were in this song. The Duhks did a terrific job of capturing the magic of Dylan’s lyrics and vocal arrangements, while infusing it with their own particular brand of energy.

I will have to think about the cactus garden. If I do decide to add it, it could easily take up half my post for some games:oh:

Game 34 – Songs That Make You Dance

Song Eighteen – Mohammed Rafi - Jan Pehachan-Ho

Result: SF 15th – Final n.a.

Reason for choosing the song: I was pretty sure that this theme was going to throw up a lot of stuff I wouldn’t much like, so I deliberately went with something that I knew would be different from most of the other entries (didn’t realize until later that Pratik would also nominate a Bollywood song:)). Even though it didn’t do well it is still one of my favorite entries in the game. I think it exudes a sense of sheer exhilaration in the performance that is sadly missing from most computer-driven modern dance tracks and slick western dance-movie soundtracks.

About the song/artist: I first heard this song in the soundtrack of the movie Ghost World, which apart from being a wonderful movie contains a gorgeous selection of music that is completely unknown to the broader public. The movie’s intro features a clip of this song from the original 1965 movie Gumnaam. The clip itself is an utter gem IMO, featuring an irresistibly frenetic dance performance by the lovely and charming actress and dancer Laxmi Chhaya.

Mohammed Rafi was an immensely talented and respected Indian singer with an unbelievably diverse oeuvre, including a range of traditional Indian music forms as well as more western-oriented classical and romantic ballads, and even rock n roll as in this song.

Game 35 – Should Have Been a Single

Song Fourteen – John and Beverley Martyn – Primrose Hill

Result: SF 6th – Final 3rd

Reason for choosing the song: I have loved this song for almost as long as I can remember, so when this theme was announced it didn’t take long for me to decide to nominate it.

About the song/artist: This is what I posted on the TFBSG blog:

Quote:

I chose this song because it’s one of just a tiny number of songs in existence that showcase the wonderful vocal and songwriting abilities of Beverly Martyn. This song is from The Road to Ruin, the second and last collaborative effort between Beverly and her more famous husband John. The story goes that Island Studios decided after this album’s release that there was more interest in John as a solo act than in Beverly, and decided to cut her out of subsequent releases. IMO a huge blunder, because although John did indeed make some good music in his solo career, it’s Beverly’s songs on this album that have stood the test of time. Other great “Beverly” tracks on the album are “Sorry to Be So Long”, the slightly trippy “Auntie Aviator”, and the one I would have liked to have nominated if I could have found it on youtube sans the insipid John song “Tree Green”: the irresistibly jazzy “Say What You Can”.

The fact that Primrose Hill is seen by most as an ode to domestic bliss makes this a bittersweet choice in the context of their career and relationship. Despite his violent and abusive behavior towards her, she supported him for many years, even contributing to his albums, and only resumed her own solo career many years after their marriage finally hit the rocks, with a vastly inferior solo album in which you could hear that all the life and joy had already been sucked out of her. A huge talent wasted:sad:
