CARSON, California (Ticker) - Once again, a high-profile U.S. Open warmup event will be without high-profile Americans Serena Williams and Lindsay Davenport.

Reigning Australian Open champion Williams and world No. 1 Davenport have withdrawn from next week's JPMorgan Chase Open, tournament organizers announced Friday.

Williams is sidelined with a left ankle injury that has forced her withdrawal from her last two events, while defending champion Davenport pulled out with a lower back strain sustained in her thrilling Wimbledon final loss to Venus Williams, Serena's older sister, last month.

Davenport aggravated the injury last week at Stanford and pulled out of this week's event in San Diego.

"I am very disappointed that I have to withdraw from the JPMorgan Chase Open and will be unable to defend my title," Davenport said. "I feel this is my hometown tournament and one in which I have always looked forward to playing. My back is just not ready yet for competition. I look forward to returning next year and trying to regain my title."

Serena Williams won back-to-back titles here in 1999 and 2000 and was the runner-up to Davenport last year.

SERENA Williams has pulled out of the JPMorgan Chase Open, denying her the opportunity to get ready for the US Open by competing in her hometown tournament.

World No 1 and defending champion Lindsay Davenport also withdrew from the Carson event with a back injury.

Reigning Australian Open champion Williams grew up in crime-plagued Compton which is the neighbouring suburb of Carson where the Home Depot Center facility is located. Williams is sidelined with a left ankle injury that has also forced her out of the last two WTA events.

Williams won back-to-back titles here in 1999 and 2000 and was the runner-up to Davenport last year.

Davenport aggravated her lower back injury last week at Stanford and pulled out of this week's event in San Diego.
