europe birth rate is dropping every year.

you can debate if they will force the sharia law or not when they will be a majority, we dont know. but taking that chance...?
Obviously it is not certain that they would be eager to enforce Shariah on all people, it also depends on the ethnic make-up of such people albeit there are some new converts into Islam faith. But it's a gamble indeed. They like our greater liberties but at the same time there are some who like but can suddenly change their ways and do a U-turn, not even into your standard Muslim but flat-out into a Fundamentalist.

And losing those millions hurts the likes of Macron the most.

Btw, the number of terrorist attacks in France clearly indicates that tollerance is not your calling card whatsoever
are you for real????

The Notre-Dame de Paris is not just a turist attraction for ppl all over the world, yes paris is making money from it, so what?? countries are making a lot of money from historical building, whats wrong with that? it means nothing

Notre-Dame de Paris is imporant bc of her history, Notre Dame is important bc it is the bench mark of Gothic architecture anywhere in the world, a UNESCO Heritage site, 850 years old . Notre Dame Is also the place where distance from Paris are measured. The cathedral has been a symbol of Paris since the 12th century and is home to incalculable works of art. Henry VI of England was crowned inside the cathedral in 1431 and Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned Emperor of France inside the building in 1804.

In 1909, Joan of Arc, who had helped her countrymen fight the English and was burned at the stake centuries earlier, was beatified in the cathedral by Pope Pius X.

its a piece of history infront of your eyes, you and me are lucky we have it and im saying this as a jew.

It's in their LAW SYSTEM, there's no stoning in non-Muslim states, and there are only a few countries in western civilization that have the capital punishment (like USA)
while Iran realizes many executions (not necessarily by stoning) . So what? Syrian president bombs his own citizens too ffs which is even more abhorrent.

You need to befriend this bonkers Swedish woman and move together to live in Afghanistan.

And you need to leave Muslims alone or join a group of Muslims haters as any hater does. Only not here.

Thank you for some people here for saving this thread from derailing into something sick to read, and for providing us with such interesting information on historical building restoration (especially @bud8 77).

If not mistaken, I read a statement from the director of Fondation de l'Oeuvre Notre-Dame (one of the few institutions with know-how in Notre-Dame preservation) saying that it will definitely take decades to completely reconstruct the destroyed north wing of NDP. So 5 years is obviously a false promise.

Reichstag and Dresden Frauenkirche are actually two great examples of different approaches to destroyed monuments. Never seen the latter live but I've heard it's one of the best reconstructions of a historical building, when it comes to materials used and details. Both look great.
I agree that Notre Dame will be an interesting case what to do with a damaged historical building. Will they reconstruct the wooden truss and Violet le Duc's spire? or will it all be modern? I guess I'm OK with both scenarios, as long as the modern version has a good design. a huge majority of gothic cathedrals and castles in Europe was reconstructed/redesigned during the XIXth century anyway.
I've been to Dresden several times, as it's just a 2-hour ride from Prague and the Frauenkirche itself looks great both inside and outside and is restored beautifully.

Otherwise though, Dresden feels somewhat strange and one has a constant impression that something is missing, especially if you're from Prague, whose center is packed with historical buildings and which avoided major WW2 damage.

In Dresden there are very large spaces between individual buildings or sometimes one even comes across a large undeveloped or empty area within the center of this city, which was heavily bombed in 1945 by the Allies. It seems to me some restoration work is still going on and that the city is yet to fully recover from what happened at the very end of WW2.

By the time they are finished I'll definitely shut the fuck up. We both will. From natural causes, hopefully.

The glass dome is very popular and uncontroversial. It is meant to give an image of modernity and transparency to the parliament. Visitors can walk inside the dome during Bundestag debates.

Unlike the Dresden Frauenkirche, rebuild enterily into it's pre-WW2 appearance, the Reichstag was supposed to look different from the time that it housed the german parliament until 1933. It was a political statement.

Won't pretend to know much about architecture but these modern additions are at least visually bland monstrosities compared to past looks. They're all such basic shapes too. Where's the flair?

Also think it should be a French thing to redesign something for ND. Surely there's enough talent.

I don't work with restoration but yes, I'm an architect. We had that subject in the study program of graduation.

Re: Notre Dame cathedral on fire

BTW, and as we’re talking about the restoration of a French historical landmark it is worth mentioning the example of the building(s) below.

Would you believe it that this site was close to being destroyed?

'Carcassonne was demilitarised under Napoleon and the Restoration, and the fortified cité of Carcassonne fell into such disrepair that the French government decided that it should be demolished. A decree to that effect that was made official in 1849 caused an uproar.'

I guess most of us would agree that it was a good decision not to follow that original government decision - or Mr. Ruskin's principle of 'stabilizing it and keeping it in disrepair' - and thus enabling people to continue to enjoy this unique historical site of all-European significance
