Re: WTA has messed up their own rankings

Thank you for all the wonderful links and info! I was thrilled about this and still am! Is Dolan also someone who posts here on the forum?

I have figured out most of the correct dates. You can see my work in the thread below. I'm trying to source out every year.

Re: WTA has messed up their own rankings

for me this is the key section:

Quote:
A recent search of the rankings archive in St. Petersburg, Fla., found several paper records were missing between April and July 1976.
Rankings were calculated twice weekly until 1990 -- they are done weekly now -- and it was discovered Goolagong overtook Chris Evert by 0.8 points after the Aussie's victory in the Virginia Slims in Los Angeles in late April 1976, before Evert regained the crown May 10.
"Unfortunately our record-keeping wasn't perfect in those early days of women's tennis and our ranking system was viewed as a means of just accepting tournament entries," WTA Tour chief executive and chairman Larry Scott said.

"It wasn't until the early 1980s that the media and players started to pay attention to the changes in the rankings during the year as opposed to only the end-of-season rankings."
So

  • there was a ranking list (an incorrect one according to the WTA) on April 26 1976. The next one was on May 10
  • weekly rankings started in 1990.
  • archives are in St Peterburg. Perhaps we can access them?
  • This seems to contradict Dolan in suggesting the rankings were biweekly as early as 1976.

Evonne Goolagong gets No. 1 ranking, 30 years late

Updated: December 27, 2007, 1:53 PM ET

SUNRISE BEACH, Australia -- Evonne Goolagong finally made it to No. 1, although the honor was 30 years late in coming.
The Australian tennis star was told by the WTA Tour that she should have been top-ranked for a two-week period in 1976. That was a stretch in which she was in the middle of winning six tournaments, including the Australian Open and the season-ending Virginia Slims Championship.
But when some tournament records were transferred to a computer in 1976, all of Goolagong's points were not entered and she never received the top ranking, the WTA said.

The WTA has amended its records, making Goolagong the 16th No. 1 player since the introduction of tour computer rankings in 1975.
Two weeks ago, the 56-year-old Goolagong received a trophy from the WTA that is now displayed in her oceanside home.
"I'm very proud of the achievement," Goolagong told The Associated Press. "I was on a roll for that stretch in 1976. It was a great surprise to hear after all these years."

Goolagong reached the finals of 16 of 24 Grand Slam singles tournaments from 1971 to 1976, winning five of them. She won Wimbledon titles nine years apart -- in 1971 and 1980 -- to equal Bill Tilden's mark for having the longest gaps between championships at the All-England Club. She has seven Grand Slam singles titles overall.

Goolagong retired in 1985 and lived in the United States -- at Hilton Head, S.C., and Naples, Fla. -- until moving back to Australia in 1992.
Now, Goolagong is frequently seen power walking in the streets around her Sunrise Beach home north of Brisbane. She and husband Roger Cawley organize tennis camps for Aboriginal youths. During next month's Australian Open, 15 young athletes from across Australia will be flown in for a camp outside Melbourne.

Thank you Rollo. Wow, what a mess indeed. I was wondering how in the world you found anything before 2010 on the official wta site, but it’s a wiki cache. So if I am understanding correctly there was an official WTA computer ranking in December 1975 that lists King at #2 and Wade at #5? Or is this only from Tommasi’s list? I’ve always found it quite remarkable that Wade was year end #2 when she failed to make a slam final. She had some really great tour wins and it was probably her best year ever, but I felt BJK, Evonne and TiniLinguine were all ahead of her.
Good times!

And thanks again for doing all this work and research!!
I'm 99% sure Tomassi is right about 1975 and King was #2 for 1975.

Dolan's book states that the first computers rankings were the year end ranking for 1975. Most sources agree, but they are wrong.

Here is why in my view.

1. Tomassi is quite famous for his stats and records. More importantly, I found no errors in his Top 100 whenever I can compare it to a year end rankinglist. The ONLY discrepancy is 1975.

2. There is at least 1 WTA Media Guide that has King as year end #2 for 1975.

3. Dolan's book says the first WTA rankings came out every few weeks. They weren't every 2 weeks until 1977. I'm trying to find out when they went weekly. Thus a late 1975 makes sense. My guess is there was late 1975 list which the WTA lost or has no record of. Tomassi DID keep a record of it because he stats crazy.

4. Finally, there is the whole bizarre Evonne Goolagong as #1 story. It came out in 2007 that Evonne "should" have been #1 at one point in 1976 because results were not added.

Re: WTA has messed up their own rankings

Thanks for elaborating on this issue, Rollo. It's been a bit confusing to be honest. Pam Shriver's WTA profile, for instance, says her year end ranking of 1983 was #6 while her year end ranking according to WTA's pdf file was #5 (December 5th). But her actual year end ranking was really #4 (as of December 19th - a date which is not available in the week by week rankings)!

Do you happen to know the correct dates (weeks) of the year end rankings for the years with wrong weeks (1986-88, 90 etc.)?

Ranking Notes

1. The first WTA rankings are from 04 November 1975. Note they lack point totals. See: Wikiwix's cache
2. The official ranking is from Rino Tommasi's Tennis Record Book, page 47.

Re: WTA has messed up their own rankings

Hi Mark.

All (correct) rankings will eventually be found in my thread here: https://www.tennisforum.com/59-blast...-rankings.html

All the years have a link to the year end rankings in a pdf file, or at the very least a ranking close to date of the year end rankings.

For 1975 the WTA has this: Wikiwix's cache

Note the date: 04 November 1975.This is the very first WTA Ranking. I'm happy the WTA has it, but it is not the year end ranking.

I am currently putting the year end ranking together using Rino Tommasi's Tennis Record Book.

My guess is that in it's first weeks the WTA rankings were very much a work in progress. The differences in the ranking from 04 November and the year end ranking (whatever week it was) are huge. Virginia Wade is at #2 in November and falls to #5 in the final ranking, where Billie Jean King is at #2.

I'm curious now to find the next published rankings after 04 November 1975. The tennis magazines from late 1975 and early 1976 don't mention WTA ranking at all!

The WTA site is a mess. Can you please provide a link for 1975? I can only find rankings beginning in 2010 on the site.

Re: WTA has messed up their own rankings

From 1986 the WTA rankings have been tied to the Year End Championships. Thus a correct ranking has to add this event to be correct. This shifted slightly in 2009. From 2009 the 2nd WTA event (The so-called Tournament of Champions (2019-2014) has been used as a year end marker.

With these events switching in 2019 the YEC will once again be used to determine the offical year end rankings.

WTA has messed up their own rankings

Ugh. The WTA does NOT have all of their OWN year end rankings.

Why am I not surprised.

If one looks carefully the pdf links they provide do not always match the actual year end rankings. This is evident as they link to the wrong week.

The following years are good (or bad).

Good

1976-1977, 1979-1982, 1984-1985, 1989, 1991-1992, 1994, 1997-1998, 2001-2003, 2005, 2007-2018

Bad

1975 (does not match Tommasi. 04 November 1975 is the FIRST ever ranking, not the year end ranking)
1978 (does not match Tommasi)
1983 (does not match Tommasi) Graf's ranking from the 1997 WTA Guide confirms this.
1986 (uses the wrong week, 22 December 1986 is NOT the year end ranking)
1987 (uses the wrong week, 17 December 1987 is NOT the year end ranking)
1988 (uses the wrong week, 19 December 1988 is NOT the year end ranking)
1990 (uses the wrong week, 26 November 1990 is NOT the year end ranking)
1993 (uses the wrong week, 27 December 1993 is NOT the year end ranking)
1995 (uses the wrong week, 25 December 1995 is NOT the year end ranking)
1996 (uses the wrong week, 30 December 1996 is NOT the year end ranking)
1999 (uses the wrong week, 27 December 1999 is NOT the year end ranking)
2000 (uses the wrong week. 25 December 2000 is NOT the year end ranking)
2004 (uses the wrong week. 27 December 2004 is NOT the year end ranking)
2006 (uses the wrong week. 18 December 1986 is NOT the year end ranking)
