Re: Aryna Sabalenka

in the end 2019 turned out being a very successful year for aryna.

3 chinese singles titles as well as 3 big doubles titles with elise, including u.s. open. now, if aryna could play 9 months a year in china, she would be world number 1.

i actually think playing doubles with elise, helped her singles throughout the year, particulary when she needed a lift in confidence. hope they continue their partnership next year.

glad the tursunov split was brief, i think aryna knew straightaway she made a mistake. they work well together.

so aryna, have a good break, and i look forward to 2020, where i expect you in contention for a slam.( with that spirit, it's not far away)

Re: Aryna Sabalenka

A challenging year for Aryna, but with a strong finish, successfully defending her title in Wuhan and adding the Zhuhai YEC to her trophy case. This has less to do with her magically playing better when she's in China than with Wuhan and Zhuhai ranking among the fastest hard courts on the WTA tour, a surface on which she thrives. I really wish there were more courts like these outside China.

Her doubles success with Mertens was a very nice surprise. Sunshine double in doubles (beating just about every top team along the way), making the Shenzhen YEC as the top seeds, and of course winning the USO. Remarkable showing at the slams overall, especially compared to her disappointing singles results:

Australian OPen: 3R
French Open: SF
WImbledon: QF
US Open W

Australian Open: 3R
French Open: 2R
Wimbledon: 1R
US Open: 2R

Finishes the year ranked just outside the top 10 (#11) in singles, and #5 in doubles.

Here's hoping for a successful 2020.

Re: Aryna Sabalenka

Good win for Mertalenka over the Chan sisters at the WTA finals in Shenzhen, 7-6(5) 6-4. In the first set, they battled back from *1-4 and later faced 2 consecutive set points at *4-5 on Aryna's serve (she saved both of them with an ace ). Then, it was their turn to blow 2 set points at *6-5 with Elise serving. In the TB, they came back from 1-5, winning 6 points in a row.

Will face (3)Mladenovic/Babos in their third and final match of the group stage

Congrats on winning Zhuhai title, Aryna !

A strong finish to the year. Very good tennis in Zhuhai from Aryna
I hope she will play her best tennis next year also in the Slams, not only in China.

Re: Aryna Sabalenka

great win for aryna, 3 titles in 2019, all in china.( infact 4 of her 5 have)

they gave a stat on the broadcast that she had a 32-7 win-loss record in all singles matches played in china, now 33. she really loves that place.

i assume we will get the obligatory, aryna/dmitry hair pulling celebration photo, something i always enjoy.

aryna and elise play their first round-robin doubles match in shenzhen tomorrow, so no chance for her to celebrate yet.

Re: Aryna Sabalenka

PEAKalenka, Queen of China!

6/4 6/2, no break point to defend, I think it was something like 17W /14 UE .

Despite a difficult year for her she is ranked 11th at the end of the year.

Re: Aryna Sabalenka

great 3 set win against elise, a really hardfought and well played match.
plays muchova in semis.

hopefully aryna and elise have plenty left in the tank for the doubles in shenzhen.

Re: Aryna Sabalenka

outside of 8 double faults, this was a very impressive performance from aryna.
numerous winners and saving break points with big serves.

the court suits her.

sakkari plays elise tomorrow at 3.p.m.

i'm not sure which is the best result for aryna tomorrow. if sakkari wins, then aryna may only need to win a certain number of games against elise. but if elise wins, then their match will be winner take all.

That's the scenario I'm hoping for (with Aryna winning the title).

It's hard for me to be excited about this tournament though, considering I probably won't be able to watch a single match from it. The matches will take place either in the middle of the night or in the very early morning for me (on week days), and I won't be home during the weekend. There is no TV coverage of Zhuhai here in Canada, but worst of all is the fact that it won't even be covered by the WTA's own streaming/VOD pay service (just like last year, IIRC), which shows the staggering incompetence of the WTA when it comes to making its product accessible to as many tennis fans as possible.

Re: Aryna Sabalenka

so aryna kicks things off at 2. p.m zhuhai time against sakkari. she's in the ROSE group along with elise. ( i think they will know each others game pretty well.)

you really need to win your first match, as it gives you a bit of wiggle room in the other.

i think aryna has a great chance to win this, she always plays well in this part of the world.

aryna v dayana in the final, with the two losing semi finalists, sonya & maddie.

barty won this last year, and she did quite well this year, so the winner gets a great bounce into 2020.

Re: Aryna Sabalenka

Whatever happens in Zhuhai, she survived this tumultuous sophomore season.

Keeping myself awake to see her lose like that against Kerber was certainly a low point for both our years

Gave up hope on her after Wimbledon tbh, couldn't be bothered anymore after all the heartbreaks, but, boy, did I enjoy that Wuhan run (though I wasn't able to see it all, but what I've seen was impressive).

After all the topsy-turvy stuff with Dimitry I hope she found her way, I appreciate the awesome success in doubles (made me like Mertens more ) but I want to see her go big on a Slam, hope she has it all figured out now, and the pressure is off with other girls coming up. (Damn, her match with Bianca, with both in-form would be something, wouldn't it ? )

Re: Aryna Sabalenka

There was no way she was going to skip a Premier Mandatory unless injured, especially with QF points to defend.

Lost both matches by an almost identical scoreline, and in both cases it could easily have gone to a decider.

Disappointed but not particularly surprised by these results. The poor quality of Aryna's returning against Kasatkina was a bit shocking, though. The tiger definitely needs some rest.
