Rosie and Billie Jean had to double up and play their first two matches on Thursday due to the rain delayed US Open final, which ended on Wednesday. Remarkably both made it through unscathed to the final.
why is there ending date of Sept 11 given

Prize Money= $18,000 ($78,000 combined-$60,000 for the men, $18,000 for the women)
Part of the Pepsi Grand Prix

[...]

The PSW's low prize money in 1970 (12-1 in favor of the men) had been the spark that started the whole women's only Virginia Slims circuit. Jack Kramer has tried and failed to get all the women banned. The 1970 prize money (#10,000) was raised to $18,000 only due to extra money contributed by Virginai Slims to meet the minimum standard of $18,000.

The infamous episode remains the only double default in tennis history after both sides have taken the court. Casals and King got a lot of press-most of it bad, and the PSW was doomed never again to be a major event for women. LA Times writer Jim Murray really lays into King, writing she was "a lousy loser". He went on with "her father got her into tennis so she wouldn't be a lady wrestler".
a lot of bad press about these women leaving the court alone would not cause the tournament doom, obviously the bad press was understood about all women in tennis and their treatment, and they solidarized rightly.

I love to read such episodes about the early open years

Goolagong stayed on top of Dur in the semis, perhaps motivated by her disastrous outing vs the Frenchnwoman in Canada. Wade plays her first event since breaking her ankle in Orange. She saves 2 set points in beating Minford in the tiebreak. She also overcame Heldman, who had a point for 5-3 lead in set 1 and led 3-2 in the second.

I have doubts on the dates of the two tournaments: Sally Holdsworth plays both, but the travel time between is 5 hours one-way.
And I think with allegedly also 6 days of play at Huddersfield, the only way is losing her Newport 2R match on Tuesday morning/midday, than immediately travelling to Huddersfield and than starting on Wednesday in 2R (1R-Bye).
9, 10, or 11 matches in 6 days - wow! (no mixed assumed)

Note:In Chaton's source the date is not given. But this event is always held on a Pentecost.
Date cannot be this week because of Ebbinghaus playing at the French.
Either the week before Hamburg (May 10-16) or the 2nd week of the French (June 1-6). Looking at the dates of the last 5 years the week before Hamburg should be right.

apropos:

Quote:
French 1

Dates: May 31-June 12
- the here and elswere given dates of the French May 31 - June 12 is not imaginable, other sources give May 24 - June 6
- winner Goolagong plays Nottingham (starting June 10) and finalist Gourlay in Beckenham (starting June 7)
- if Beckenham is placed wrong than most tournament dates of the following weeks will be thrown over

Margaret Court wins ugly over Evonne Goolagong, getting revenge for the Wimbledon final the previous week. The bright sunshine affects both ladies, especially Mrs Court on her serve. In all she serves 24 (one account even says 25) double faults. “That must be some kind of record”, she mused afterwards. In all there were eleven service breaks.

Court takes home $1,200, while men’s singles winner Cliff Drysdale hauls in double that amount at $2,400.
--

From ‘The Irish Times’, July 12, 1971

By Vera McWeeney

Mrs Margaret Court’s share, although she reached three finals and won one, was £500 for beating new Wimbledon champion, Miss Evonne Goolagong, in the singles, and £50 and £25 for being runner-up in the other two events.

The match between Mrs Court and Miss Goolagong featured some great tennis, but also some desultory stuff in which the Wimbledon champion played at times like a tired, overwrought little girl. This replay of the recent Wimbledon final was what the crowd really had come to see and while one felt it would have preferred to see the 19-year-old part-Aboriginal charmer reaffirm her superiority over Mrs Court, the applause for the older girl’s win was generous for she played some magnificent shots – curbed what must have been intense worry about her fifteen doubles faults – and altogether went about the match like a real champion.

Miss Goolagong’s happy smile never faltered. Her backhand volleys were a delight to watch, but the same stroke on the forehand side brought about her defeat as she could not control it all. Winning or losing she exuded cheerfulness and one feels that when she begins to care deeply about success or failure, no one will beat her, but tennis will have lost a refreshingly happy personality.

Mrs Court lost the first game of the match, in which she projected three double faults. The fact that despite saddling herself with this handicap there were two deuces in that game should have given us the clue that she was all out for revenge. She won the next five games, losing no more than two points in any of them, and then indulged in another spell of double-faulting before winning the set 6-3.

The next set was Miss Goolagong’s all the way, with that beautiful backhand reeling off the winners and Mrs Court contributing to this success with three double faults in the last game. All this seemed to point to a super final set, but all the drive seemed to have left Miss Goolagong, and with Mrs Court becoming more commanding and pinning the younger girl to the baseline with the sheer force of her shots, she reeled off the match-winners comfortably, losing only four points in the last four games.
