Re: Maria at Indian Wells 2013!

Great tournament for Maria.

It's kind of funny that perhaps her best singles tournament ever comes after an injury caused layoff.

Maria was winning wearing a visor...she should have kept it on for the semis.

A fantastic tournament, one of her best ever. Together with the Olympics probably.

Two top 10 wins in a row, just great. She is playing at top 10 level for sure.

Re: Maria at Indian Wells 2013!

A series of why's?

Why didn't Kiri grunt in her IW SF match against Big Maria? Why was Kiri so muted? I have not heard Makiri so quiet on court since she was a teenager or so it seems. Before the match on TV I could tell she did not want to talk when Brad Gilbert was asking her questions. It's like Kiri was tight or something because she usually has something to say to the interviewer.

Why did the IW website list Little Masha as being 4 pounds heavier than Big Masha? The WTA Tour guide makes the same kind of weight mistakes. I would say Pova is about 30 pounds heavier than Kiri if not more she is so much bigger than Kiri and I don't just mean height wise. I mean width wise too.

misH, why should Kiri even play Stuttgart? The field is so loaded there and an early round loss there would hurt her clay court confidence. I hope Kiri takes a couple weeks off after Miami to rest her sore left knee so she can be ready to play some tough clay court tennis this season. I think Madrid would be a good start to Kiri's clay court season. That said I don't like Kiri playing tournies the week before majors becuse I think it drains her physically. New Haven last year is a perfect example of that. Sure she got to the final but that final took alot out of Makiri and I believe that led to her shock second round loss to Hlvackova at the U.S. Open. I know Maria will play Strasbourg this year right before Roland Garros but if she goes far in Strasbourg that could hurt tire her out and hurt her chances in Paris.

Well, Kiri goes in DC @ovi before Miami, she tweeted earlier. There are 17 of top 25 in Stuttgart, if Kiri isn`t in, she will start her clay season in Madrid, then Rome and Strasbourgh, before French Open.

yes an easier draw will be needed for Kiri to get past the fourth round again. Not many players could have beeaten Aga, Petra and Big Maria back to back to back. Maybe only Vika and Serena could have when they are healthy. In the future Kiri needs to beat players like McHale and Burdette easier than she did in Indian Wells. Those 2 three set matches as well as Petra's 3 set match cost Maria something in the semi's. It had to. She is only human afterall.

You're welcome. Big Maria and Little Maria are still freindly but not good friends like they used to be. But Kiri got a boyfriend at a young age and that caused some seperation between them

Indian Wells was a great tournament for Makiri. She played okay against Sharapova. We saw some brialliant flashes from Kiri off the ground but that was obviously not enough. Big Maria was just too strong off the ground for Kiri. Kiri should have broken early in the match when Pova served 3 DF's in a game. For Kiri to be able to beat Pova she has to be Pova's equal or better off the ground and on return of serve. That was not the case last night. I hope Kiri's troublesome left knee is okay. Fatigue may have set in too. On to Miami. I hope Kiri picks up more ranking points there.

Re: Maria at Indian Wells 2013!

Not a shame at all, to lose against an in-form Sharapova!! Biggest semifinal of her career and back to back wins over Aga and Kvitty. We are so proud of you, KIRI

Still, Kiri had her chances in the first set, having some breakpoints. Especially at 4-5*. She just wasn't lucky enough in the deciding moments, and Sharapova played really well when she was under pressure.
In the second set, big Masha served extremely well, not a lot to do for Kiri...

Fantastic tournament for Kiri! I am really stoked
Might she have another deep run at Miami

Well played Masha K Shara was just too good for her last night but hopefully she can build on this and crack the top 10. Anyone know what her ranking will be come monday?

Re: Maria at Indian Wells 2013!

I missed match, because I fell asleep while watching Caro and Kerber moonballing! Blame them! Well, this is her biggest result outside of Grand Slams + she`s been injured almost month before IW, beat two top 10 players, that`s just great! Hope she can bring some of this game in Miami.

She entered Monterrey just after Miami, but not Estoril, where she began her last year clay season.

Re: Maria at Indian Wells 2013!

Maria lost but it seems she played quite well, so it's not too bad (and I like Sharapova too so it could be worse). Great tournament

I hope she will be fine for Miami and win some matches there.

But that does not change the wonderful week that she had in IW, are all positive things to take out of this tournament, and also for the rest of the season this is a big confidence boost to reach the top ten, no doubt will and effort to achieve their goals that she is making, has grown incredibly in this stage of her career, she should enjoy and move forward on this long road ... she deserves it

I'm proud of Maria!
I agree! Maria played some great tennis and some of her passing shots were top of the class. A wonderful tournament for her here, now she knows for sure she can beat the best. Miami next, and I hope Maria can keep the momentum going. Her Knee held up well against Sharapova, so hopefully another great tournament for her there.

And remember once each girl got their first boyfreind that put more distance between them. Also Kiri is very personable and popular among her WTA peers while Big Maria is not because she keeps to herself and treates like on the tour as a business.

After she beat Kvitova in the QF Kiri said this about her realtionship with Sharapova.

Q. Can you talk about the evolution of your relationship with Sharapova? You were close when you were juniors, and now you have become rivals. How did do things change over the years when you got into the pros?
MARIA KIRILENKO: So many questions about our friendship. (Smiling.)
Well, when we were young we were close friends, closer friends than now, because we have a little bit different ways. You know, like she lives here; I live in Russia.
So we don't have really interests now, you know.
