disappointing that evie had to use an injury timeout to lose barbara's momentum ... i can't stand players who do that
thanks for the report

|Iconoclast||Nice report, and well done getting a seat for the Anna match. That arena looked like the Tokyo subway in rush hour, but I suppose the organizers would have taken some heat if they had placed it on Center or in Vodafone.|

My Report - Day One at the Open
Arrived about 10am, was about to line up to queue for a ground pass when some girl came up to me, she had a spare ticket and wanted to sell it for $10 so I said thank you very much hehehe. So the day started well hehe
I raced over to McQuillan vs Garbin and was happy with the score. McQuillan was up 3-1 and appeared to have brought her game with her. I watched the rest of the match, it was actually very entertaining and surprisingly of very high standard. McQuillan was serve/volleying a bit and doing it extremely well. Evonne Goolangong was watching intensely. Garbin though was playing damn well, she was painting the lines again and again, even Rachel was a little surprised at how many winners Tatiana was hitting. The main difference between the 2 was purely 1st serve. Rachel was up breaks in both sets but as soon as she got ahead she just couldnt serve a first serve in! She wasnt double faulting but she was serving like 1 out of 5 first serves in from 5-3 in the second and the first set was the same from 3-1 up. It cost her the match as Garbin was able to dictate play a little to much when receiving a second serve from Rachel. Rachel though didnt look too upset after the loss, she really did play very well and was happy with her performace, unfortunately Garbin really brought her 'A' game today!
From there I went str8 over to Court one to watch the end of Scott Draper, a great performance from him, was pleased that he wrapped it up quickly as I had gone there to get a seat for Anna K!!
And boy did Anna K play well! About the best I have seen her play! 0 double faults I think, she was hitting a lot of winning, she ran down some incredible shots and produced some screamers, even the crowd was like, "OMG she can play tennis!" Nagyova was making a few more errors than usual but Anna really was just too good for Henrieta is every department. Anna K though, while not serving a double fault will need to do something to her second serve, it was a little slow around 110kms. Hopefully if she keep this form she will be able to give Justine a run for her money.
From there it was over to Evie vs Rittner. I was expecting Evie to do ok as she has regained some form in pushing Panova the week before. She started well 2-0 40-15 on serve when things started to fall apart, she got into old defensive habits. The whole match was very frustrating as always with Evie. She was lucky to grab the first set and after Evie lost the 2nd her whole family left the court, they couldnt bare to watch. Evie played a shocking 1st game of the 3rd set, just like she had done in the second to be down a break immediately. From then on she played her service games well. She had so many break points though, and wasted them, she still has no idea that she should actually attack on these chances! In the end Evie took an injury time out at 4-3 (Break down) in the 3rd set. Purely tactical, as she wanted Rittner to cool off and stuff her service up after the break. The strategy worked, Evie got the break back with the help of a rare Rittner double fault in this game. Evie was then playing with more aggression to hold serve and be up 5-4. The last game was typical Evie, she played the first couple of points well, but then match point came around and she played wimpy pathetic tennis, lucky for her Rittner stuffed a shot on her 2nd and final match point and she got the win.
Dont be fooled, Evie was lucky!!!! She's playing ok, but not much different from in previous years, maybe her first serve is slightly better and her backhand improved, but her 2nd is terrible, she was averaging 95km's today! I dont expect Evie can beat Kremer but you never know.
Managed to catch the end of Morigami match. She won fairly comfortably, she was hitting the ball solidly, her opponenet though was playing very erratically, Akiko didnt have to do a lot. Would like to see her get pushed so I can see what her game is really like. She was happy with the win though.
Stosur vs Martinez - Watched most of the first set, was a very even match. I thought Stosur would do ok against Martinez providing she could handle the top spin. And Stosur did beautifully. I got the impression she likes to play against this type of game. Martinez was playing ok, but due to Stosurs aggression Martinez was scrambling a lot of the time. Stosur really was hitting her strokes very well, and trying to volley when she could. After Stosur lost the 1st set tiebreak which she played pretty poorly I went over to another match for a bit thinking Stosur would crumble in the second. However things stayed even and she got the set and the 3rd set which I came back for was a very tight even contest again. A lot of slicing and top spin, Stosur was hitting out when she got a chance. In the end she got the better of Martinez who played a few very loose shots at the end to give her the well earned victory.
Caught some of Schiavone vs Barna - a good match, long rallies, Schiavone grunting like a pig as always, her leg seemed to be causing her some discomfort. Barna was fighting hard running everything down and it paid dividends as Francesca missed a few easy put aways.
Pratt - Washington - Hadnt seen mashona play before but she sure can whack the ball very hard!! Consistency is her problem and Pratt just had to keep the ball in play toi win the first set easily. The second set saw Mashona find her range more, pushing Pratt all the way before falling apart late in the tiebreak, where she screamed at the crowd to Shut Up
Saw Medina Garrigues smash her racquet after goin down 5-2 in the 2nd, poor thing hasnt regained enough of her old form.
Molik vs Tulyaganova - Terrible set by both players, they were just trying to hit as hard as the could, the unforced errors were massive, lucky for Alicia she made less and got the set. The second set saw both players play better, more so Iroda who really found her game, hitting huge shots and serves, really overpowering Molik at times to get to 5-2. Molik then started to get on top of Iroda again as Iroda started making a fwe errors. Then at 30-15 5-4, Iroda served a double fault I think and Molik hit a hard return on the fault ball only to injure her ankle. Suspect she has minor ligament damage and will miss 4-6 weeks. Hopefully she will only miss Tokyo and will be ok for Doha/Dubai. She was pretty upset with herself, she tried to come out and play again but only last 2 points as she could put ant pressure on her ankle at all. ant retired. Iroda gave her a big hug and looked disappointed to have lost her doubles partner!
Disappointing end to the day. But a good day in all for the aussies!
