Paula Cristina Gonçalves - The Mercurial Girl

Okay, so let me start things off by explaining why I've referred to Paula as 'the Mercurial Girl', and it's because it's so difficult to predict exactly what you're going to get from her when she steps onto a tennis court. As long as I've followed PCG, she has been a player who has tended to blow hot and cold. Now, when Paula is on, she plays with a combination of easy power and shot-making ability that makes her look like she's ready for a spot in the Top 100. However, on a not-so-good day, her game can start to look pretty ordinary, and that is the thing that has held her back up until this point in her career because she has always had a few too many of those off days along the way.

Having said that, some of the matches that Paula has been able to win so far this year have been an absolute eye-opener. She made the quarters in Rio -- having qualified -- and beat Peer, Glushko and Larsson along the way. And now, this week in Bogota, she is in the semis having bested Cepede Royg, Tatjana Maria and Alexandra Panova. Is this the beginning of the big breakthrough that her fans have been waiting for? Well, only time can tell, but hopefully so because the Tour could always do with more players like her -- fun-to-watch game and nice, easy-going personality. My fingers are crossed here!

Re: Paula Cristina Gonçalves - The Mercurial Girl

Strong, gutsy effort from Paula yesterday against Soler-Espinosa, but Sílvia was a little bit stronger, so kudos to her for making it to the final. That said, there's no doubt in my mind about the fact that Paula is going to continue getting better as long as she can stay healthy. Take for instance her volleys, I think that they are definitely better than what they were a year or two ago, and that's a big part of the reason why she's now got the ability to come forward to the net even on clay. The future is looking bright right now, so I'm eager to see what comes next.

Re: Paula Cristina Gonçalves - The Mercurial Girl

I have been a fan of her since the first time I saw a couple of years ago, so happy to see her into the top 100 in doubles and now into the top 200 in singles.

Good luck in the green clay season Paula

She is doing quite well on red clay after reaching the SF of WTA Bogota, she is back this week playing in $50,000+H Saint-Gaudens and she is also into the SF in singles and doubles.

Re: Paula Cristina Gonçalves - The Mercurial Girl

Yeh, reaching the semis in St Gaudens was definitely a good result for Paula, but she struggled to keep a consistently high level in those matches, IMO. With that said, I've got to give her credit for her willingness to fight hard though, and I think that's what really helped her to get some quality wins last week.

This week, she played qualies at Roland Garros, and despite losing early 3 and 4 to Hogenkamp, it is also important to note that this was her first time playing at a Slam, so someone is definitely moving up in the world.

Anyway, hopefully she isn't too disappointed with how things turned out here because there's still a lot of damage that she could do this year as the tour shifts to grass and hard. As far as I'm concerned, Paula has got a game that can work on any surface, so as long as she's playing well, she's going to get wins.

Re: Paula Cristina Gonçalves - The Mercurial Girl

She will play a the full grass season. Started in 50k in Eastbourne last week. This week Paula is playing the Q in WTA Nottingham. Her all court game could suit on grass so I hope she can win a couple of matches there.

Re: Paula Cristina Gonçalves - The Mercurial Girl

Wasn't the easiest of qualie draws for Paula in Nottingham. She started things off with a good win over Grace Min, but then faced Ash Barty, who made the semis of Eastbourne, and ended up falling 4 and 3. No shame in that loss though because Ash really knows how to handle herself on the turf.

I'm just glad to see Paula's willingness to play on grass -- she played 3 tourneys last year too -- because it will pay off in the future. Grass might be a tricky surface for some players to master, but the only way to do that is to get as much experience on it as you can, and that's what Paula is doing.
