Sweet Caroline

Neil Diamond's song "Sweet Caroline" is apt for this usually smiling Dane. As of early 2018 she has more to beam about than ever, for the last few months she had captured her the 2017 WTA Year End title, gotten engaged, and finally proved her critics wrong by hoisting the Australian Open Trophy after a nip and tick final over Simona Halep.

The slam was long overdue. 8 years earlier she looked to be on the fast track to grand slam glory, for in 2009 Caroline fought her way to the US Open final. Surely more success was coming? Titles came in bunches in 2010-she led the tour with 6 titles. Wozniacki had a 3 set tussle with Kim Clijsters at the 2010 WTA finals. Despite her loss to Clijsters she finished the year #1. 6 titles more in 2011 and with #1 for a 2nd year, but she was still without a slam. Indeed, with only 2 semifinals she seemed to going backwards. This made her a poster-child for "slamless #1" jibs.

From the start her father Piotr has been her primary coach and mainstay. Caro stayed with him as coach over the long haul despite frequent calls from outside to switch coaches. She tried out a couple of other coaches, but always returned to what was, for her, tied and true.

The years from 2012 to 2016 saw the Dane perform consistently. She won at least 1 WTA title every year from 2008 to 2018. The slamless #1 tag took it's toll however. Never the heaviest of hitters, she often reverted to defensive tennis, a type of game with which she can defeat 90% of the tour but did little to help her win majors. Caroline was hampered with injuries for most of 2019. For the first time in over a decade she failed to win a title. Her best result was getting to the final in Charleston. No matter, with her marriage to basketball player her circle is complete. "Sweet Caroline" won her slam and her man.

Don't Call Her Gorgeous

The hard hitting German seemed destined for a peak in the top 20 at best. On a good day she is capable of beating anyone, but on her off days she is decidedly off. It is this inconsistency more than any other factor that prevents her from a higher ranking. Bad luck with recurring injuries have also resulted in roller coaster dips in her rankings.

Her name is pronounced Goerges should be pronounced 'Gur-ges' with a hard letter g in each case - like 'gurgle'. Nonetheless her striking looks earned her the moniker "Gorgeous Goerges." She is not a fan of it, stating:
'I'm not the type of girl who tries to make herself more glamorous. I want to show what I can do in tennis and it has nothing to do with how you look on court. If you're good-looking on court, it doesn't win any matches.'

She caught fire towards the end of 2017, winning titles in Moscow and Zhuhai. A title at Auckland in early 2018 finally got her a coveted to 10 ranking. Julia lost early at the Aussie Open in the 2R, snapping a 15 match win streak, the longest of her career. After reaching the final of a big event in Charleston in late April of 2018 Julia has a good chance of perhaps ending the year in the top 10, which would be another milestone.

Georges has a monster serve. In 2018 she led the WTA tour in aces.

Her serve and net skills translate well on a doubles court. Although not the focus of her tennis, Goerges , has made the semifinals of 3 doubles slams-the Australian Open in 2015 and 2016,and Wimbledon in 2016, as well as 4 quarterfinals.

So far her biggest hurdle in singles is getting to the quarterfinals at the slams. Julia is 1-6 in the 4th round at majors. Her 2018 semi finish at Wimbledon ended when she wa beaten by Serena Williams 6-2 6-4.

Eva Munthe Fog was married to the architect Mogens Jacobsen (14 November 1957 in Asminderød). She was the daughter of Staff Reinhold Munthe Fog and Erna Schønheyder.

EY BISCAYNE -- Anna Ivan's favorite nursery rhyme must be Humpty Dumpty.
Ivan also had a great fall -- but all the king's horses and all the king's men were able to put her back together again, and the 22-year-old Palo Alto, Calif., native has returned to play her first professional tournament in almost two years.
And Ivan isn't doing too badly.
Ivan, a qualifier, has advanced to today's third round of the Lipton International Players Championships and will play Helena Sukova.

Ivan's promising career took a horrifying tumble in September 1986 when she fell off the roof of her home.
"It was three days before classes started at Stanford," Ivan said.
"I got into all the classes I wanted, and I came home excited. I asked if there was anything I could do. My dad was on the roof, cleaning the gutter."
Ivan fell 20 feet and landed on her head. She broke nine bones -- in her wrists, her feet and her face. She woke up in the hospital five hours later.

"I was lucky," she said. "The doctors said I could have been paralyzed."
The roof accident was Ivan's second injury that year. In May she broke her wrist as she stumbled during a casual doubles match.
"I put my arm out to break my fall," Ivan said. "Instead of playing tennis, I went to summer school."
By April, Ivan had recuperated and was practicing for the summer tour.

Then, at school, Ivan saw two guys throwing a football. She joined them in a game of keepaway.
"The ball went over my head," she said. "I kicked it and chased it, and then I must have gotten tackled the wrong way."
This time, Ivan broke her collarbone and was back on the disabled list.
"That ruined another summer," she said.
"I went back to summer school, and I did some hospital volunteer work with children.
"It was really frustrating, having all these injuries, but at least I figured out what direction to go academically. I want to do something with kids."
Ivan, who deserved a role on St. Elsewhere by now, healed again. She picked up her racket again.
Her coach, Mike Patrick, the University of Tennessee women's coach, offered her a scholarship.
Ivan became a Volunteer. It was a start.
"I felt I never gave pro tennis a fair shot and I wanted to come back to the tour," said Ivan, who had been ranked as high as No. 39.
But Ivan didn't have a ranking any more. After two years, she had fallen off the computer, too.
Last month, Ivan's father called the WITA to ask if she could have a wild card into the LIPC qualifying. The tournament came at a good time, during spring break, and Ivan had played well here before, reaching the Round of 16 in 1986.
Ivan played her first pro match in two years nine days ago. She won. She won again the next day and again last Saturday and made the main draw.
Ivan beat Ann Grossman in the first round and Maria Lindstrom in the second round. She is 5-0 after her two years off the tour.
"I'm lucky I got a chance," said Ivan, who needs to play two more tournaments to regain her computer ranking.
"Lipton has been a lucky tournament for me. But I didn't think I'd still be here. I was really nervous the first match, but I'm getting more and more relaxed. I lost experience by missing two years, but I'm more mature now, and I'm happy to be back."

Contemporary papers of the day called her Mrs Joseph Warren. She was a member of the Longwood Cricket Club. Mrs Warren entered the 1911 US Nationals.

She wrote several articles for magazines such as Munsey's. Her entry in the 1914 Who's Who indicates she was against women's suffrage.

A statuesque blonde in the top 5 of the rankings but still looking to get to her first grand slam semifinal or better. Elina has given her fans renewed hope by claiming the WTA Championships in late 2018. 2019 was another good year, with semis at Wimbledon and the US Open (her first two semis in majors) and getting to the final of the WTA Championships. Many attribute her rise to a relationship with pro Gail Monfils, a fellow tennis pro.

Her parents were both involved in sports-her father a wrestler and mom Olena a competitive rower. Elina quickly progressed after her first match in 2008, winning the 2010 French Open junior championships. Clay is her strongest surface and best shot at a major.

In the top 100 in 2013, Svitolina notably reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros in 2015. 2016 saw more upward movement-including a victory over Serena Williams at the Olympics to get to the quarters.

With 5 WTA titles in 2017 Elina has established herself as a solid member of the world's top 10. Despite this she remains largely unheralded due to under-performing in grand slams. She is the first Ukrainian female to break into the top ten in singles.

At the 2017 French Open she looked set for a breakthrough vs Simona Halep in the quarterfinals. Up 6-3 and a match point in the second set tiebreak, Svitolina suffered a massive choke, failing to win another game in a 3-6 7-6 6-0 loss.

2018 has so far followed the same pattern. By April she has 2 WTA titles, but in the Australian Open she was rolled over 6-4 6-0 by Elise Mertens.

"Svitolina has a complete baseline game. Her groundstrokes are very consistent and are hit with moderate-to-big power. Her backhand is her stronger side, especially down the line, but both of her groundstrokes penetrate the court well. She demonstrates good movement around the court and is capable of hitting very accurate shots on the run. She possesses a consistent serve but isn't exceptionally fast. She improved her serve in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Her weakness is probably her volleying at the net as she has been known to struggle with this. Dmitrieva was the first Soviet female to really compete on the international tennis circuit. Starting tennis at age 12, she was a part of Moscow's Dynamo Club. At 16 she became champion of Moscow. A solid top 40 player, she paved the way for Olga Morozova, another Soviet female who would reach top ten status in the 1970s and supplanted her as Soviet #1.

Dmitrieva made big news in 1958 when she was Wimbledon junior finalist. This was significant because the Soviet Union had not allowed it's players outside of the USSR up to then. Anna must have felt a lot of pressure as the "first" female Soviet and the face of female Soviet tennis.

Often fiery on court, Anna didn't hesitate to argue with linesmen or umpires. Strong and heavy set, her main weakness was her backhand.

Despite being allowed to play at Wimbledon and abroad it must be kept in mind that Dmitrieva was very much told where and when to play by a communist regime more concerned with her propaganda value and Soviet policy than her tennis development. This hindered her chances because it often kept her out of top flight competition against the best players. A lot of her titles were in 3rd world or Eastern Bloc nations.

A memorable match came at wimbledon in 1967. In the quarters of the mixed doubles Anna and patner Alex Metreveli fough over 56 in losing to
Maria Bueno and Ken Fletcher. The 6-8 7-5 16-14 contest stands as the longest mixed match in Wimbledon history.

In 1966 Anna earned a degree in French from Moscow state University.Anna transitioned over to a coach at Dynamo from 1969 to 1973, her tennis limited to Soviet events in this period.

From 1975 Dmitrieva has since become a sports journalist winning several awards in Russia. She was the author and host of the program "Tennis at midnight with Anna Dmitrieva," as well as a permanent commentator for the broadcast of tennis tournaments on NTV and NTV-Plus

A participant in the 1911 US Nationals. She was several months pregnant at the time.

A daughter of banker Charles Tracy Barney, president of the Knickerbocker Trust Company. The wedding occurred not long before Mr Barney "lost control of the Knickerbocker Trust Company, which was shut down to his disgrace," according to a 2009 article in The New York Times. As a result of the scandal, one of the signal events of the Panic of 1907, Mr Barnes shot himself, in a successful suicide, on 14 November 1907.

Mary Archbold was the daughter of the businessman and oil refiner John Dustin Archbold. For more on him, see here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dustin_Archbold. Michael Murray Van Beuren was also a businessman and from an old-established New York family with real estate interests.

From the 'New York Tribune', 26 September 1895:

The wedding of Miss Mary Lavinia Archbold, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dustin Archbold, of No. 20 East Thirty-Seventh Street, and Michael Murray Van Beuren, was celebrated at 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon in Saint Mark's Church, at Tarrytown-on-the-Hudson. The guests from this city and neighborhood went up the river on a special train, which left Grand Central Station at 2 o'clock and returned shortly before 7:30 o'clock. Half a hundred carriages were at the station at Tarrytown to meet the guests and carry them up the hill to Saint Mark's Church, in Broadway.

The marriage ceremony, which was accompanied by some choral music, was performed by the Reverend Percy S. Grant, the rector of the Church of the Ascension, this city, assisted by the Rev. J. Selden Spencer, rector of Christ Church, Tarryton. Miss Archbold was given away by her father. Her sister, Miss Frances D. Archbold, was the maid of honor. The bridesmaids were Miss Lilia A. Thorne, Miss Anne H. Archbold, sister of the bride, and the bridegroom's two sisters, Miss Elizabeth J. Van Beuren and Miss Mary L. Van Beuren. John W. A. Davis, cousin of the bridegroom was best man. The ushers were the bridegroom's brother, Frederick T. Van Beuren, jr.; John F. Archbold, Guy Phelps Dodge, Henry S. Kip, Alexander S. Cochran and F.J.H. Brookfield.

A reception followed at Cedar Cliff, the country home of the bride's parents, a short distance from the church. Mr. and Mrs. Van Beuren will go abroad on Saturday for an extended tour through Great Britain and the Continent. Mr. Van Beuren is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick T. Van Beuren. He completed his collegiate course at Yale in June last.
