Re: my weekly rankings project

1964

At the start of the year is clear: Turner will lose more points week bye week than she will defend in the first months and Margaret Smith can occupy the №1 safely.

Jan 6: Annette van Zyl jumps from #21 up to #13 because of her victory at Port Elizabeth. She earned 452 points with a 58%-quality-ratio which includes defeats over #10 Catt, #4 Bueno and #3 Hard!

>>> more

- Darlene Hard wins Johannesburg(2) and takes over the #2 from Turner. It's the 2nd time in her career to get into that position. She defeated #10 Catt, #13 van Zyl and #5 Jones enroute.
- This week ends the Aussie double crown in which Smith and Turner occupied the 1st two spots for 64 consecutive weeks!
(in the round-points-only column they had a reign of 71 weeks together)
Probably this remarkable record can only be broken in the 1980s when Navratilova acquires US citizenship (then together with Evert)

April 13:
- Nancy Richey rises up 5 positions to #15 after back to back victories at San Juan and St.Petersburg
- 18yo Nell Truman has top100 debut: she reached the SF in Hampstead and jumps from #130 to #91

April 20:
- Vlasta Kodesova wins Palermo and rises 30 positions to #49.
She earned 255 points with a 65% quality-ratio (defeats #7 Ebbern, #18 Sukova, #27 Schacht)
Only 3 weeks ago she had entered the top100 for the 1st time.

before Roland Garros:

>>> some more

>>> May 18 list

Roland Garros:

>>> more

- Margaret Smith is the 2nd player to surpass the 10,000 points mark
- Helga Schlutze reaches a new career high after her SF apperance in Roland Garros (with a good chance of reaching the final!)

>>> June 8 list:
Francoise Dürr wins in Casablanca and moves up to #23 (respectable defeats over #24 Alvarez, #21 Schacht and #7 Ebbern = 61% quality ratio)

>>> June 15 list

>>> June 22 list:
Monique Salfati jumps #50 up to #34 with reaching the semis at the Queen's Club, of course it's her highest ranking so far

after Wimbledon:

>>> more

Darlene Hard drops from #2 to #4, but it's very interesting that she could hold the #2 spot for so long after her retirement!

July 20: Norma Baylon's top10 debut

Aug 3: Sonja Pachta moves up #70 to #51 after her surprise final appearance in Hannover defeating #16 Schacht enroute but chanceless against the #1

the US Nationals:

>>> Sept 7 , Sep 14

there are two real surprises this year:
- Carole Greabner's dream run to the final includes notable defeats of #11 Baylon, #21 Susman, #9 Richey
- Carol Hanks Aucamp reaches the SF with more respectable defeats over #3 Turner, #23 Rees-Lewis and #5 Jones enroute.
She earned quality points of 251, more than double of the other semi-finalist, Nancy Richey, and even more than Graebner (237)!

Oct 19: Gail Sherriff moves up from #76 to #58 with her SF at Strathfield routing #6 Ebbern

Dec 14: Jill Blackman jumps up 22 positions to #39 after reaching the final in Melbourne

full season:

>>> more details

- two of the three top 10 candidates from last year made it real
- top 10 candidates for next year: Schultze, Schacht, Dürr

this year my rankings seem more different to the expert rankings from thence than in previous years.

9 Hanks
10 Jones

Ulrich Kaiser based on an International panel.

1 Bueno
2 Smith
3 Turner
4 Moffitt
5 Ebbern
6 Richey
7 Graebner
8 Jones
9 Lehane
10 Susman
-----------
11 Schultze
12 Baylon

Only 1 point separated Bueno and Smith but it is obvious that many correspondents regard Wimbledon and Forest Hills as sacrosanct.
Ebbern ahead of Richey interesting.

Susman #6, Graebner #4, Hanks #9!
One good Grand Slam result is not enough to be ranked top10! You should have good results all year round.

20 titles out of 23 tournaments for Smith compared to Bueno's 8 titles says all. Is there a WTA ranking system on which Bueno can be #1?

My rankings show Ebbern and Richey tight together with Richey slightly ahead, but in the round-points-only column Ebbern is ahead of Richey.
So it's not unreasonable for someone to rank Ebbern higher.
