Re: my weekly rankings project

1962

_______________________

Jan 15: Judy Tegart jumps from #109 to #69

Jan 22: Anette van Zyl first time top100

March 19: German success
two Germans met in the final of Cannes, winner Almut Sturm makes a leap from #92 to #55, while Helga Niessen jumps from #286 into the top100

March 26: more German success
- Heide Schildknecht jumps from #136 to #75 with reachin the final of Menton (last week she moved up already 40 positions)
- now are 9 Germans ranked inside top100
- Bueno wins Caracas and gains ground a bit, moving up from #17 to #14

In my memory there were very rare occasions, that former German players from the past (before Graf) were mentioned by commentators today.
I can only remember one occasion with "the times of Helga Masthoff".
I learned here by working on this thread, that this was and is definitely disregard to all the Germans, who have had a lot of success in each decade.

April 2: Renee Schuurman makes a leap from #8 to #5 - it's a new high for her, she reached her former high at #6 far back in 1959

April 9:
- Edda Buding takes over the #5 position from Schuurman and also reaches a new high
- Helga Schultze is again successful on the Mediterranean circuit like last year, winning 2 tournaments back to back and rises #40-28-21

Ann Haydon takes over the #1 spot because she earned some points during the last weeks while Smith did not play,
but Smith returned to play the week thereafter and wins the big title in Rome, which is enough to reclaim the #1 spot immediately.

3 weeks including Rome and Roland Garros:

- two weeks in a row Renee Schuurman reaches a new career high, form #5 to #3 now

>>> some more

>>> some more

>>> more

June 11:
- after reaching the final in Manchester Judy Tegart jumps up 13 positions to #23
- Carole Caldwell's SF appearance is worth to jump up 14 positions to #36

June: 25:
- Darlene Hard moves up to #2, she profits from Haydon not defending her Queen's Club points this week, it is her new career high
- Rita Bentley, the winner at the Queen's Club, earns 511 points with defeats over #24 Blackman, #8 Truman, #22 Cawthorn,
but it's only enough to gain 3 ranking positions
- Caldwell reached the SF at the Queen's Club - with defeats over #14 Catt and #15 Susman she gains 9 positions and is now the #25 for the first time

after Wimbledon:

>>> top100

- there had been some roller coaster movements between Rome and Wimbledon:
Truman from #10 up to #6 and now falls off the top10, while Turner had gone down to #10 and now is #5 again
- Susman earns the biggest weekly points sum so far with 1349 since making the rankings and it triples her previous best result for this ranking period coming into the championships;
with this she makes a leap from #16 into the top10
- Moffitt's QF appearance defeating the reigning #1 enroute is worth for rising 10 positions to #26 now - like Susman she also almost tripled her previous best result
- despite losing her first match, Smith had enough points ahead of any contender to stay the #1
- former #1 Bueno re-enters the top10

July 23: Caldwell is new under top20 after reaching the final in River Forest

Aug 6: Judy Alvarez had some successive weeks, the young American climbed 45 positions to #36 now (81-71-70-63-65-52-51-43-36)

Aug 13: Mortimer is back under the top10 after her victory in Munich - the former #1 dropped to #16 few weeks ago

after the U.S. Nationals:

- no special changes in the top region
- player of the week is 17yo Vicki Palmer, who surprisingly reached the SF (routing #29 Moffitt, #9 Susman, #36 Roberts, #28 Thomas), she jumps up the rankings by 30 positions to #32
- 16yo Jani Albert jumps up almost 90 positions to #96 while Carol Hanks jumps up 56 positions to #78 with the same round result

Sept 24: Carol Caldwell wins L.A. and 512 points for the rankings with a 56% quality ratio (defeats: Bentley #13, Susman #10, Tegart #19, Hard #3),
but she only rises two spots to #15

Oct 1:
- Renee Schuurman's final appearance in Berkeley is enough to take over the runner-up position of the rankings, it is her career high.
- winner Darlene Hard however falls behind Schuurman because she had to defend her points from last year, so no new points this week to stay above

Oct 22:
- Turner's win at the Australian Hardcorts let her rise to #4 for the first time
- Carol Newman reached the SF there, what is worth a leap from #152 to #89; she has a 64% quality ratio from defeats over #27 Schacht and #18 Tegart;
it's by far her best weekly result
- after a long time former top50 player Jacueline Rees-Lewis wins some matches, reaching the SF in Casablanca with a defeat over #14 Catt;
with that she can jump up over 900 positions to #135

Nov 5: The last results notice from Norma Baylon is more than 12 months old.
Now she wins Buenos Aires and 236 points and re-enters the rankings at #89 (her previous high had been #202!)
She has a quality ratio of 61 % with defeats over #2 Schuurman and #18 Sukova.

how the full season looks like:

>>> top100

- loser of the year is Yola Ochoa, as last year's #2 falls down below the top20!
- winner of the year is Rene Schuurman who worked her way up from #14 to #2!

_____________

again this year there are big differences to the polls and expert rankings from thence:
World rankings

Quote:
Ned Potter of World Tennis
1 Smith
2 Bueno
3 Hard
4 Susman
5 Schuurman
6 Haydon
7 Sukova
8 Reynolds
9 Caldwell
10 Moffitt
Why Ned Potter ignored Lesley Turner for the top10? Is a Wimbledon QF of Moffitt (she had only one small title on her record) worth more
than 9 finals (incl. Roland Garros)? Consequently he had to rank Karen Susman at the top for winning Wimbledon - but he did not!?

Those expert-rankings can be black boxes ...

tournaments summary:

it is the first time I can assign a Grade B+ to a non-GS,
but in the end there are less tournaments with Grade B/B+ than in the previous years
