Snigur evades pressure as semifinals set at Wimbledon

Despite beating Polina Kudermetova 6-2 6-4 in 61 minutes to reach her first Wimbledon semi-final, Daria Snigur left the court in disgust after she failed to serve out the match at 5-2 in the second set, nerves suffocating her as she neared the finish line.

“I’m not happy now because I played so bad in the last two games,” she said, shaking her head. “I feel pressure now and all matches will be hard. All guys told me, ‘Ooh, you can win Wimbledon. It’s very good for you. Grass is your court’, and it’s pressure. It’s very hard for me.”

Snigur's run to the semifinal moves her winning streak to 10 matches after her victory in Roehampton last week. The Ukranian’s face lights up as she thinks back to those innocent times, just a week ago, before the expectations and pressure arrived.

“I loved Roehampton. When I came to Roehampton, I think that I can’t win this tournament because it was my second time on grass and my first tournament on grass! So I was thinking, “I won the tournament? [it made me think] I can do this and I can win Wimbledon.”

Snigur is enjoying a brilliant season at both junior and professional level. Before her grass dominance, she scaled the Australian Open semifinals and then reached the quarterfinal at the French Open, belying the fact that she detests the slow rallies of attrition on the dirt.

Her professional career has already yielded three titles since December, including a W25 event in Kashiwa, Japan. While many players look up to the professional events as their next great challenge, she offered a different perspective.

“I think juniors is harder because they are my girls,” she said. “I play all this time with my girls and we always have really hard matches. I don’t know the senior girls and I have easy matches when I don’t know girls. When I know the girls, it’s very hard for me. If I don’t know them, It’s easy for me.

Snigur’s father taught her to play tennis and she dreams of being a famous tennis player. Back in Kyiv, she is coached by former top 20 player Larisa Savchenko at her academy. She finished school and is already looking at studying sports psychology at university.

The 17 year-old has decided that Wimbledon will be her final junior event, which offers even more incentive to win. There is a lot of pressure there, and when she discusses how she deals with it all, she finally laughs. “My father blocks it. He tells me, ‘Dasha, be careful! it’s ok.’”

In the girls’ draw, Snigur will face top seed and Roland Garros finalist Emma Navarro, who recovered from a set down in her third consecutive match to beat Natsumi Kawaguchi 4-6 6-1 6-1.

Noel's Impressive Performance Leads to Saturday's Girls Wimbledon Final Against Snigur

Unlike Noel, Snigur doesn't care for clay, and is not shy about proclaiming her love of grass.

"I have a very good forehand, a very good backhand and I want to attack all balls," said the 17-year-old, who beat Noel 6-1, 6-2 a week ago in the Roehampton final. "I like grass, grass is my favorite surface."

Snigur said she was very nervous to start the match, because she had lost to Navarro last month in the quarterfinals of the French Open Junior Championships.

"I play it game by game, see if the Queen of the Clay knows grass," said Snigur, the fifth Ukrainian girl to reach the Wimbledon girls final. "I know she plays very well on clay, [but] not on hard, not on grass."

Navarro, who had lost the first set in her previous three victories, admitted that she was concerned after dropping the first set to Snigur, not because she had played badly, but because she had played well.

"The first set, I played a really good set," said the 18-year-old from Charleston South Carolina. "I don't know if I could have done that much different. I played really well and she answered that. Every point, she played really well, played out of corners. Her game is definitely suited for grass, which was tough. She returned well, did everything well, and in the second set I got a little discouraged that I had played a really good set and lost 6-3, she was really tough."

"I think my game is better suited for clay, and her game is better suited for grass, but on any given day, anything can happen on any surface."

Navarro will not be playing next week's USTA Clay Courts, which she won last year, a title that earned her a main draw wild card into this spring's WTA Volvo Open in her home town. But she is planning to play the USTA National Hard Courts in San Diego next month and the week prior to that, the $60K ITF World Tennis Tour event in Kentucky.

After playing their semifinal matches on Court 5, which has only bench seating and no Hawkeye, the girls will move several steps up in atmosphere when they play on Court 1 Saturday afternoon. Noel says she enjoys playing in front of large crowds, while Snigur is less enthusiastic about the prospect.

"Yes, it's a very big court, and yes, I'm nervous of course, because it's too much people," said Snigur. "I'm very nervous when there is much people around me. I don't like big courts."

Congrats on winning junior Wimbledon title !

She has very good groundstrokes. But must improve her weak serve a lot ...

Snigur ends junior slam career with Wimbledon title

For both Snigur and Noel, the packed, intense Court One marked the biggest occasion and surroundings of their careers. Initially, it was Noel who seemed to handle the surroundings best, moving to a 4-1 lead in the first set as she blunted Snigur’s power and depth with her variety and slice. But Snigur soon found her range, constantly moving the ball around and forcing the American onto the back foot as she captured her first junior slam title.

The Wimbledon girls’ final was a repeat of the final that had just played out at the Roehampton Grade 1 event on the eve of the Junior Championships, where the Ukrainian secured a comprehensive 6-1 6-2 win. The match-up remained her mind as they took to the court.

“I know her game because we played in Roehampton final. It is a very hard game for me because I don't like when she slices all the time,” she said, shrugging. Her solution was simple: “I had to play because it's finals at Wimbledon! I don't have any choice in that.”

Among the long list of talents she has scalped throughout her 12 match winning streak, Snigur is a unique player. Though her serve is slow and her technique is so unorthodox, her groundstrokes are immaculate. Few junior players demonstrated such a mastery of depth, pace and direction changes, particularly off her backhand. Throughout the week. Snigur was proud to stress that aggression laces every part of her game.

“I play strong shots on forehand and backhand. I don’t like slice. I don’t like this,” she said, gesturing with her arms to high, loopy balls.

“She’s a very good player,” said Noel. “She is super deceiving. She loves her backhand and she can hit her backhand from anywhere in the court. She was even running to the deuce side to get backhands! She’s just a different kind of player. That’s not a normal thing to play against and it’s hard to face.”

Noel stressed that although Snigur can seem less athletic or intense than her opponents, the reality of facing the Ukranian is far different.

“She’s not crazy-intense and she doesn’t look like she moves but when she gets on the court when we’re playing, she does,” she said. “You’re like, ‘Oh, just move her around, maybe you’ll get a few mistakes.’ But, she’s quick. She’s there to win as everyone else is.’”

Snigur is a player of very few words and throughout the week, even after her comprehensive victories, she was most frank when underlining the pressure she felt during the event. When she reached the semifinal after thoroughly outplaying Polina Kudermetova 6-2 6-4 and losing one service game towards the end, she was only upset.

Wimbledon marks the final junior slam of her career. She will play one more junior tournament - the 2019 ITF World Tennis Tour Junior Finals in Chengdu at the end of the year. When asked if the pressure has abated, at least for a while, she smiled: “Yes, yes. I am tired now. I can relax.“

IMHO her groundstrokes technique is somewhat less faulty than her serve, but faulty nevertheless. I guess technical deficiencies will not let her rise to the top of the tour

Now ranked 319, she's seeded 11th in qualifying competition - she beat Guo Meiqi 6-4, 6-2, in the first round. It will be much tougher in the second round on Tuesday, when she faces 2nd seed Yuan Yue (ranked 222).
